the the hayemaker 6 show one fighter caught my eye and it wasnt because off skill,

imo i thought john watson was a very lucky lad he done nothing but hold run round the ring acting like muhammed ali when he was nothing like him and martin gethin nearly had him out in the 10th he talks about john murrey im very sure that the top 5 in britain at lightweight would rip him to bits wats ure thoughts forum.

I was quite impressed by him he picked his shots well and his hand speed is good i do think Murray Thaxton and McAllistar would all beat him

He seemed talented and tricky. But also didn't seem to have great initiative and looked quite vulnerable.

Will Hayemaker want to wait a bit before putting him in for titles (above English level)?

I had Gethin a clear winner in that fight. Watson's "cagey" performance must have picked up enough rounds though.

I thought he looked sharp- he was certainly catching Watson with some clean shots throughout the fight, and seemed stronger at the end too.

He did a clever backflip too (following a stumble/tumble,) and raised his arms in a theatrical gesture in round 10! At that point though he needed a knockdown to draw the fight - and came close to getting it.

thanks whicker :TU:

i guess even if he lost on the cards he acquitted himself well enough to keep himself in and around the mix

Yeah, I agree- This fight was just scored by the ref, after all. Had there been three judges two out of the three may well have scored the fight in his favour.

If there was another minute in that fight then Gethin might've finished him. I had it 97-93 to Watson, but although he did look quite skillful, he looks very vulnerable. Every time Gethin connected cleanly, it seemed to wobble Watson (the 1st and 10th rounds spring to mind). And I don't think Gethin's a big puncher - I have certainly never seen him floor anyone, but he nearly did with Watson.

Won't go past British level.

think watson done very well considering this was the first time hjes gone past 4 rounds he said himself he wants a few more fights before going in with murray

yeah it was a big step up and probably a good learning experience. Hayemaker do seem a bit "no nonsense" in their matchmaking. In all a win, not a pretty or a dominant one, but a learning fight that moves him up.

If only Gethin were a bit faster and threw punches that were a bit shorter. If he'd fought like Dodson did vs Quigley, I think he might have stopped Watson.

yeah watson was gone in the last round and looked troubled every time gethin hit him cleanly i wouldnt of been surprised if had been scored a draw

I had it very clear to Watson - 97/93.

I had it by the same margin Dioufy!

LeeH, you didn't see any skill in Watson's perfomance? At times he boxed beautifully, and did enough to win the majority of rounds at a level he's never fought at.

I don't think he's got the chin to go further than British though.

yeh mate he did av skill just dont think hes as good as the hype makes out and even after 10more fights i onnestly believe murrey would rip him 2 bits gotta say tho he hung on very well and dug in that last round but i believe his skill will win him the fights but his chin will almost certainly be his down fall wat u rekkon bacca mate

I don't think there is too much hype though lad.

He shown that he can box and took Gethin to school in those aspects, but when he unloads he drops both his fists and that's when he seems to get clocked.

Was worried last night knowing he hadn't been past 4 before, but he did well, despite the last round setback. Maybe Gethin is just a machine and most other LW's wont be able to come forward as much as he did in the latter rounds...? But maybe not.

I too don't think he's got the chin for it fella, British at best but he's in a really tough division so will probably end up getting sparked out, definitely if he came across Murray.

Hope not though.

I don't think so, and I am only saying this because Watson said in his post-fight interview that he wanted a few more learning fights before going for Murray. If Murray can't get Mezzache, then I would love him to go in against Burns - I know we're crossing the Hennessy/Warren divide, but I take hope from seeing Elcock Vs Macklin. Get that fight on, and get Watson in with Lawton, then the winners can fight each other. If Watson doesn't want Lawton, then get him in with Limmond in a final eliminator. Gethin is probably fringe English quality anyways - I have always felt that his wins over Siddique and Gethin had mitigating circumstances around them. Fewkes, there was something up with him - look fucked after three rounds, didn't make weight, and hasn't fought since. Siddique, hasn't fought since as well, inexcusably tired after six rounds (get on the treadmill) and was overrated with a padded record. I would also love to see Gethin in with Brawley - let's see how good the Scottish man is. It's very interesting times at 135lbs domestically.

If he had power, he'd be one to watch. Without it, he may or may not make it to european level.

Watson boxed the correct fight against a more experienced fighter with a reputation for taking the scalps of up-and-coming prospects at domestic level.

Prior to this fight, Watson only had 30 rounds of professsional experience. The lessons he learned in this fight were invaluable. Admittedly, Watson made a couple of mistakes in standing tall with his chin exposed when forced onto the ropes, particularly in the 1st and 10th. However, he was caught a little cold in the first round and in the 10th round he was understandably fatigued. However, he was compos mentis enough to hold on and last the fight out. How many times over the years have British fighters been criticised for their lack of survival instinct when clipped ?Bruno didn't show it, Khan doesn't appear to have it. I also seem to remember Carl Froch being wobbled by moderate opposition earlier in his pro' career. This is professional boxing, not a knitting contest.

Watson outboxed, outfoxed, and at times, outclassed Gethin. I realise the judging of any sport is based on opinion, but I can't for the life of me see how anybody could have scored that fight to Gethin. He had a few fleeting instances of success at the start and end of the fight. Nowhere near enough to take a decision.

Aside from the result, Watson gained the most from the fight. He will improve for the rounds. Could the same be said of Gethin ? If they were to box again, I believe we would see more of the same from Gethin, but in my opinion, Watson would cut out the couple of lapses in concentration he exhibited over a distance he had no previous experience of. The result, I believe, would be more emphatic.

Rather than criticise Watson's performance, which all things considered, was a very good one - he should be applauded for taking such a risky fight against a boxer who was favoured by many neutrals to beat him.

Just because Watson isn't quite ready for John Murray after 10 fights, that does not presuppose that after a few more 8 or 10 rounders, he won't have gained the vital experience and learned the tough lessons necessary to have success at that level.

Personally, I think Willie Limond would be a perfect opponent for Watson in the coming 6 months. He would build up rounds, ringcraft, and would be a good benchmark of his level of skill.
