Have we seen the last of Doc now? Such a frustrating career, especially as his pedigree before turning pro was of the highest order, especially for a "Welsh" fighter. Do we think commitment issues? Or did money take the want and desire away?

Dont think he earned that much, when he left collyhurst it was the end of him really.

Oh, dont get me wrong, im not talking millions took the desire away, but even thousands can do that.

I heard Tony was going great guns when he started at Enzo Calzaghe... its hard to say its the end of him given the politics between Enzo C and a certain promoter. Just possibly wrotten timing, the only Welsh fighter getting regular fights is Cleverly and he had to move stable.

I would say his best purse would of been 15-20k maximum. So it is hard to believe that sort of doe would be enough to kill his hunger. I never rated him anyway, Taz gave him nightmares so it shows his limitation. BTW i'm taking anything from Taz.

Agreed, although he was a superb amateur, which is why Ive been dissapointed with his pro career. I remember him beating a lad in our gym 20-1 in the welsh am semis. That same lad went on to win it the next year. He was also a solid four nations competitor.

Given what Barrie Jones has done since - robbed against Mbaye and did far better than McIntyre and Elwell in a short notice job against Brook... Doherty performance against Jones was pretty good form.

He won the WBA's on a few occasions and was on the way to doing very well in the Commonwealths (the year Jamie Arthur won it) till he lost on cuts.

His achievements as an amateur were good, but maybe should have achieved even more.... one of the best amateurs I have seen (especially for looking good to turn over).

either 307 or 207 am fights im sure ?

I'd be very surprised if he got anywhere near that figure. Some people fighting for British titles don't even get that much.

The situation as far as I'm told is that Tony is no longer associated with Sports Network and will return on a Calzaghe Promotions bill in the future but his first mission is getting himself back in shape.

Is Doherty a light welter or a welter these days. If he's still at 147lbs then get him in a rematch against McIntyre. If he's at 140lbs, then get him in with a top five domestic fighter. Brook would stop him quite easily I think though - didn't Jones wobble Doherty?

Had a long lay off though, so that's a worry.

is it just me, or ever since ever since, we've been hearing about Doherty in the vein of 'if only...' or 'what could be....'. It's like he's been a serial underachiever/ we've perenially been waiting for him to deliver for about 4 years now.... ?
