ANTHONY Mundine says his first Brisbane appearance, against unbeaten Daniel Geale on May 27, will be a springboard to a showdown with WBC and WBO world champion Kelly Pavlik.
Mundine (35 wins-3 losses) claimed the bout at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre could be his last in Australia, saying he had "big fish to fry" overseas.

"We're on the verge of securing major fights. After I win this title against Geale I want to take on the champions whether it's Pavlik, (Arthur) Abraham or (Felix) Sturm," said Mundine.

"I don't want to muck around with contenders, I want the champions.

"There's talk of me fighting Pavlik, but I'm not going to look past Geale (21 wins). He's a very good fighter and I want to dispose of him."

Outspoken Mundine showed plenty of respect for ex-Olympian Geale who has accumulated a fine record since his first pro fight in October 2004.

"I've seen Daniel fight and he's got skill," said Mundine.

"He hasn't had due recognition from the public or media."

Geale 28, is a softly-spoken family man who is most comfortable when his fists do the talking.

"This fight will help me get where I want to go," said Geale.

"I've been fighting for a lot of years and want to step up to meet the best in the world. This is my time."

The Brisbane Entertainment Centre last hosted a fight night 20 years ago when Jeff Harding stopped Tom Collins in the second round to defend his WBC light-heavyweight title.

The only thing I can expect from Choc is an excuse for why he will not fight Pavlick. If his skills were as diverse as his excuses he'd have beaten the best long ago.

Still deep down I hope it happens coz it will only take one shot to keep him quiet for a while.

Thanks Emerson. I was wondering what was up with that.

Pavlik mentioned mundine as a possible opponent after his last fight, i like pavlik because his style and power, i want to see him keep winning, i think mundine would be a very bad choice, his speed and slickness could give pavlik a lot of trouble, i think sturm would be a safer fight for pavlik, mundine vs abraham would be good, so would the press conferences , both are controversial, i hope that happens soon, but he has to get past geale 1st.

Mundine should carry on feeding off Argentine no hopers or washed up fighters like Shannon Taylor, while leaving the fighting to Pavlik and Abraham. It's no certainty that he beats Geale IMO anyway, the youngster looks handy.

Looks like Mundine is looking to cash in, he's done sod all but fight no hopers since beating Green. He's just an ordinary fighter who gets major publicity because he talks shit and has no class, but he comes up short when it really matters.

Mundine always talk about fighting the best out there but always end up fighting bums , cab drivers or no-names.

It's the same crap over and over again.

Controversial two-time WBA super-middleweight champion Anthony Mundine today told the Brisbane Times that a fight with WBO and WBC middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik is in the works should he win his May 27th fight in Brisbane with current unbeaten IBO champion Daniel Geale. The WBA#1 ranked middleweight stated, “After this fight I want to unify the division with Pavlik, Sturm and [IBF champion] Arthur Abraham, and at this stage it’s looking like there’s a good chance of something happening with Pavlik,” Mundine said. “The best thing is that it’s not Pavlik’s people pushing it - it’s HBO, the television network he’s with. They know who I am, they know that I’m a character, that I’ve got flamboyance and charisma and that I can fight. I just want the opportunity to show them that I’m the No.1 middleweight in the world.”

Mundine has stated this week that his fight with Geale will be his last on Australian soil, thus putting into doubt a future rematch with former WBA light-heavyweight champion and fellow Australian Danny Green which was being pencilled for a 40,000 crowd at the Subiaco Oval, Perth, later in 2009. Mundine is apparently keen to continue his career
at 160 pounds rather than in the 175 pound light-heavyweight division for the immediate future.

This is good and bad news, bad because i'm a fan of both, one of them has to lose, and good because it should establish mundine on the world scene if he wins and that will really open doors for him to big international fights and it should be a good fight.

Mundine is a twat, who likes fighting no hopers and isn't very exciting. Hopefully he stays in Australia.

It's strange how a guy who went to Germany to fight Ottke in his 11th fight is so well known for fighting shockingly bad opposition. I wonder how different his career would have been if he hadn't suffered that embarrassing knock out?

Wow allot of hate for Mundine on here, Mundine-Pavlik would be a very interesting MW title fight, if Pav doesn't face Abraham or the Williams/Winky winner this is the best fight out there at MW

Mundine is all wrong for Pavlik. A dead at the weight, fight for 45 secs a round, Abraham is much more suited to Pavlik. Pavlik being big and fit at the weight.

His work rate isn't bad

I said Abraham re workrate.

Mundine can be a bit timid though and then his own workrate goes down, when the opponent pushes him hard.

offtopic a bit 'barn, i am leaning towards the view that AA's weightmaking problems will debilitate him too much to beat Pavlik at 160, tho anywhere north of 165 or so i think he stops him

totally agree. Pavlik has enough stamina, height, power to do Abraham at 160. But a healthy Abraham - like the one we saw at 166 v Miranda - would chop him down and poss outclass him.

Arthur tires far too quickly at 160. When he's tired he can't finish off his opponents. And he starts flailing and dropping his gloves. He was lucky that Lujuan Simon isn't a puncher though I suspect that was why LS was there in the 1st place.

I think Mundine could make Pavlik look like he did in that dreadful night vs Hopkins. But I don't know how strong Mundine would be at middleweight.
