Graham had that style to befuddle everyone, but he never quite held everything together did he?Quixall wrote:There are quite a few......
But i would go for Herol Graham. He should have won a world title quite easily
1. McCallum - Fought the wrong fight, changed his normal tactics and McCallum was a class fighter
2. Jackson - Beating him to a pulp, all he had to do was keep away from that....BANG....You know the rest
3. Brewer - Just too old, left it too late in the day for his comeback
Real shame
Good post Stu, lots of good names in there. If pushed I'd go for Charnley, but Jones deserves a mention for his sterling efforts against McCrory. Francis will always be the 'what could have been, what should have been' man... cue comment from Autobarn 8)stujones wrote:Dave Charney or Jim Driscoll would be my call, Chris Finnegan is among the finest also and I was a big fan of Billy Schwer.
Colin Jones is a bit of an idol of mine, but he would have got absolutely mullered had he fought Hearns or Leonard. He wasn't the greatest boxer, but had dynamite in his gloves.
One for me, of unfulfilled potential, is Spencer Oliver. Finest prospect I have seen - I am sure he would have won a world title at one stage - unfortunately, there are too many questions we will never answer about him to know how close he was to the total package (e.g. chin etc). Dean Francis is somewhat similar.
It was a sterling effort, although in the first fight I think the draw flattered Jones a little bit. I thought McCory won a close one. Incredibly biasness from Alan Minter as the studio guest - he's saying the McCory won and then when Des pushes him to say were the judges wrong by giving Jones a true he's like "nah, I think a draw was fair"!! its quite funny really. Jones celebrated like he won it.... his efforts did deserve to be rewarded, but not actually with a draw or a win if I am being honest.Deserter wrote:Good post Stu, lots of good names in there. After Francis v Vegas, I can't be arsed (for once)!Deserter wrote:Good post Stu, lots of good names in there. Oliver seemed to have a great engine, excellent strength, good short punches, clean punching. He had the look of a world class prospect.stujones wrote:Dave Charney or Jim Driscoll would be my call, Chris Finnegan is among the finest also and I was a big fan of Billy Schwer.

One of the problems with Graham, was a rather dysfunctinal private life, that ended up affecting him in the ring, aswell as out of it. Plenty of things happened to him, including a failed suicide bid and it's documented in Johnny Nelson's excellent autobiography. Like a lot of fighters that leave the Ingle gym, Graham, Hamed, Rhodes, etc, they seem to go down hill, because other trainers have different methods and techniques and if you have spent years at another gym, it does'nt really work if you move away.Autobarn wrote:Graham had that style to befuddle everyone, but he never quite held everything together did he?Quixall wrote:There are quite a few......
