WBO welterweight world champion Miguel Cotto has announced that Puerto Rican countryman Joe Santiago is his new trainer. The change came after Cotto parted ways with his uncle and longtime trainer Evangelist Cotto in a highly publicized incident last week. Santiago and Cotto began training this week in Tampa, Florida for the first defense of his title against IBF champ Joshua Clottey on June 13 in Madison Square Garden. Santiago has been with Cotto for a number of years as a nutritionist. Evangelista Cotto had been with Miguel for nearly 16 years.


Not sure this will be of benefit to Cotto, Clottey, imo, would give Cotto all he could handle BEFORE the recent fight with his Uncle.

This will be a good benchmark for Cotto, Clottey is a full-sized Welter, game, fit and comes to win. He's a very hard fight for Cotto.

Clottley is all wrong for Cotto.

When Cotto wants his usual 'rest' Clottley will still be coming.

Clottley weighs in excess of 12st on the night apparently - as high as 12st 5lbs.

I don't believe it possible for a man to rehydrate 25lbs or more overnight. I'd buy him weighing close to 12stone. But I doubt Cotto is far behind.

Clottey poses many of the same problems for Cotto than Margarito did: great punishment resistance and relentlessness.

Let's see how Cotto's stamina and chin holds up in the latter rounds.
