  • Referee: Albert Nuss

Laszlo Papp of Hungary, boxing on an Austrian license, won the European middleweightitle by stopping the Danish title holder Christian Christensen on cut in the 7th round.

A crowd of 19,000 attended The City Hall in Vienna, Papp was now the most popular sports figure in Austria. Charley Parrish, European correspondent for The Ring, speculated in the August 1962 issue how large the crowd would be if Papp were allowed to fight in his homeland...

The two 36- year old fighters felt each other out in the 1st round. The lanky Dane wasn't tempted to do in- fighting with the shorter Papp. Looping lefts from " Gentleman Chris " hit Papp in the 3rd. After a brutal exchange both men came out with cuts: Papp in the forehead, Chris above the right eye.

In the 4th Papp fired away at the body, but the seasoned Dane covered himself expertly. A right hook dropped the Dane for an 8 count, but Chris fought back, cutting Papp again, now above the right eye.

In the 6th it looked as if Christensen was on his way to outboxing Papp who suddenly looked tired and clumsy. But a right hook from the Hungarian further damaged Christensen's eye. Blood poured. It came as no surprise when the ring doctor halted the bout in the interval before round 7.

Trivia: Ring physician was Dr. Fritz Pfister, former Austrian amateur champion in the lightweight division. Al Silvani was cornerman for Christensen.
