Shavers was trapped in a neutral corner and appeared slightly hurt as Ellis bombed him with right hands, but Shavers fought his way out and dropped Ellis with a right uppercut to the jaw. Ellis tried desperately to regain his feet but was counted out.

  • The original main event at the Garden scheduled for June 18, 1973 was Jerry Quarry vs. Jose Luis Garcia. But on May 21st Garcia was stopped in the 1st round by Joe Alexander, which automatically incurred a 60 day suspension for Garcia. On May 22nd the Garden signed Earnie Shavers to substitute for Garcia. However, in early June, Quarry pulled out with an intestinal flu and on June 2nd Jimmy Ellis was signed as a substitute for Quarry.
