Miranda Versus Kariuki
Miranda and Kariuki fought a back and forth bout at the light heavyweight limit. Kariuki used solid jab and body work throughout, and his best round was the even second round in which he managed to stagger Miranda. However, Kariuki was standing straight up and not moving his head coming forward, and the more experienced Miranda used his power right to win rounds on points, exploiting Kariuki's style flaw.
In the fifth, Kariuki opted to slug it out with Miranda, and got knocked down by a vicious Miranda right hand during the exchanges. Kiriuki got up, but his mouthpiece was out, and he waited for the referee to replace it. In what commentator Barry McGuigan called "a horrible piece of refereeing," the referee waived Miranda at Kariuki, who nearly got decked by a right with his hands down waiting for his replacement mouthpiece. Kariuki got up, and this time the referee did replace the mouthpiece, but Kariuki's legs were gone and the fight was stopped shortly thereafter when a Miranda right staggered a helpless Kariuki across the ring, out on is feet.
