Cardiff, twenty-four years old, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was an experienced fighter who had previously met both George Rooke and Charley Mitchell in the ring. He stood the same height as Sullivan, the world's champion, but weighed thirty pounds less.
The bout took place at the Washington Rink in Minneapolis before ten thousand onlookers. Sullivan broke his left arm in the first round after missing a punch at the elusive Cardiff. Forced to use only his right for the remainder of the fight, he could not catch up with the smaller man and the fight was declared a draw after the end of the scheduled six rounds.
