John L. Sullivan vs. P J Rentzler
John L Sullivan beat P J Rentzler by TKO in round 1 of 4
- Date: 1882-11-17
- Location: Theatre Comique, Washington, District of Columbia, USA
This fight was the last of world heavyweight champion Sullivan's tour of the U.S. offering money to any man who could last four rounds in the ring with him. Rentzler was a Georgetown blacksmith and replacement for Mike Collins, Sullivan's scheduled exhibition opponent. Rentzler had fought only once before this. He tried unsuccesfully to defend himself as Sullivan battered him to the floor six times before police stopped the one-sided affair. "A more sickening spectacle of brutality was never witnessed here before," reported the Washington Post.
