This fight, part of John Sullivan's 1881 tour of the Northeast, took place on a stage before two thousand people gathered at McCormick Hall in Chicago. Burns fashioned himself the Michigan state boxing champion and was both taller and heavier that Sullivan. However, Sullivan made short work of him. Down within twenty seconds, Burns rose shakily to his feet but a blow to the mouth sent him careening into the audience below. This was followed by a brief sparring exhibition between Sullivan and (Captain) James Dalton.
