One of Britain's biggest ring stars of the late 1920s, he amazed the British boxing fraternity with the manner in which he not only beat but thoroughly outclassed some of Europe's best fly, bantam and featherweights while still in his mid teens.

He was renowned for his hard, accurate, lightning-fast straight left (or jab), his quick, clever footwork, punching variety, ring intelligence and all-round boxing skill. He had an attacking style that entertained the crowds, but he tempered this with a rock-like defence. As a growing teenager predominantly fighting full-grown men he was not noted as a knockout puncher.
