Biography
Edwin "Dynamite" Valero started boxing at around age 12, compiling a reported amateur record of 86-6 with 45 kayos. (after his second pro fight Valero confirmed his record: "Soy estilista y tambien pego duro. En amateur gane 86 peleas y propino 45 nocauts".) He was Venezuelan amateur champion three years running, as well as Central and South American champion (beating Francisco Bojado, July 13, 2000).

Prior to turning pro, on February 5, 2001, Valero was in a severe motorcycle accident, in which he fractured his skull, forcing surgery to remove a blood clot.

Valero claims that his Venezuelan doctor cleared him to fight on January 17, 2002 and he turned pro that July with a first-round kayo. After posting a record of 11-0 (11 first round knockouts), Valero ran into licensing trouble. In January 2004 he failed an MRI in New York and thus was denied a license, effectively banning him from fighting in the United States.

On March 19, 2008, however, Texas granted him a license.

In 2006, Valero scored his 17th consecutive first-round win, eclipsing the undocumented 100-year-old record established by Young Otto in 1906, who reportedly won 16 straight boxing matches by first round knockout. "In my matches, I focus on winning, but I'm not going for knockouts," said Valero. In March 2006, Valero's streak was snapped in his 19th bout when he stopped his foe in the second. Since that time, Tyrone Brunson broke Valero's record by scoring 19 straight first-round wins.

On September 4, 2008, Valero gave up his WBA super featherweight title and moved to lightweight.

On Sunday April 18, 2009, Valero's career likely came to an end after being arrested for murdering his wife. Within hours, Valero admitted guilt.
In a quiet tactical war which was the surprise bout on the undercard of Pavlik-Martinez at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, ex-Olympian Korobov got taken the eight round distance by Snyder. Korobov appeared the aggressor, but the bout turned quiet after the third round as Korobov punched and Snyder, who had a good defense, counterpunched and landed with some effectiveness. Snyder came to win, and Korobov appeared content to outbox Snyder and not take chances. Snyder's 8-4 record appeared deceiving.
Tapia won a unanimous decision. Tapia had height and reach advantage, and speed with his right jab to win all four rounds, but kept his hands dangerously low, allowing for Winchester to land some counter rights and remain competitive. Winchester had a nosebleed and was down for a no count flash knockdown in the second. Brief scuffle with words exchanged after the bell in round two, and Tapia hit Winchester in the face after the bell, with Winchester warned for foul language. At times, Winchester looked ready to go, but pounded his heart and refused to give up. Tapia landed alot of effective jab combinations, with Winchester landing a few effective counter rights, mostly grabbing and holding on whenever Tapia landed anything.
Close bout, with the outcome up for grabs till the very end on the undercard to Pavlik-Martinez. Going into round eight, the bout appeared two rounds for Bryan, two rounds for Arroyo, with three rounds even, but the rounds were all close. Bryan appeared to be winning the eighth round-and the bout-when Arroyo landed a left hook and put Bryan down for the count near the end, bringing the crowd to its feet. Many ringsiders were debating if Arroyo landed the knockout blow when Bryan was down on the canvas or on the way down.
* Manny Pacquiao 50-3-2 (38 KOs) vs. Joshua Clottey 35-3 (20 KOs)
* Pacquiao entered ranked as the # 1 fighter pound-for-pound in the world and the # 1 welterweight according to The Ring Magazine. Clottey, a 5-1 underdog, entered ranked as the # 5 welterweight by the same publication.
* The fight was the first to be held at the new Cowboy Stadium which opened May 27, 2009. The official crowd was reported to be 50,994.
* This bout, labeled "The Event", came together after the super-fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. fell through due to disputes over the type of drug testing that would take place leading up the fight.
* Due to his normal trainer being unable to secure a visa to enter the United States, for the first time Clottey was trained by Lenny DeJesus

Bout Summary
The largely one-sided bout saw Pacquiao throw combinations against a heavily defensive Joshua Clottey. Pacquiao's volume of punches seemed to keep Clottey from opening up and attempting to mount much offensively other than an occasional right hand. Both men began the bout with jab combinations, Adamek landing more with the right, and an overweight Golota landing more with his left. But Adamek's punches were coming in faster, and a right hand lead followed by a left hook coming in too fast to see or stop dropped Golota in the first. In round two, Adamek used combinations to the body to wear down Golota, and jabs to the face to cut Golota's left eye badly. Golota began to headhunt with his hands down, showing no defense, looking for 'one big shot' to win the bout, but there was no 'target'. Adamek continued firing fast jabs in rounds three and four, as Golota continued to slow. Adamek dropped Golota with a right hand in round five, and though Golota beat the count, Adamek was landing jabs and hooks at will, mixing his punches so well that the defenseless former contender Golota took a senseless beating until referee Bill Clancy stopped the bout, and the severe beating appeared to end Golota's career.

In a hard fought bout with a disputed ending, Joao Guzman, a Dominican fighter now fighting out of Brooklyn, New York, and Ali Funeka of East London, South Africa, fought to a twelve round draw which left the vacant IBF Lightweight title still vacant. Guzman appeared to win the first two rounds with crisp counterpunching, while Funeka appeared to win the third and the fourth with a long left jab which bloodied the nose of Guzman, and caused a cut under his right eye. Funeka won the fifth and the sixth by frequently tagging Guzman's face, making a bloody mess of it as both fighters threw power punches. Guzman appeared to win the seventh by landing numerous body shots. Funeka won the eighth, ninth and tenth by landing alot of right hand leads, leaving Guzman in serious trouble, his face bloody, hanging on to survive. Sensing he was trailing on the cards, traded power shots on the inside in round eleven, which looked even. Guzman won the twelfth, coming forward and throwing everything he had left in the tank in an attempt to score a knockout, giving Funeka a good beating. While one judge had the bout 116-112, the other two judges scored the bout a draw. Promoter Gary Shawn stated the bout was one of the worst five decisions he had ever seen and called for a full investigation and background checks of the the two judges who scored the draw. Stated Shaw "This was an inexplicable decision. If this is the best judging boxing has to offer, then we are in real trouble." However, it appeared that it was a headbutt (not called by the referee) which opened a cut over Guzman's right eye in the second that gave Funeka his initiative from that point on, and forced Guzman, the 29-0 former WBO Super Featherweight champion, into a more defensive posture for the remainder of this 12 round bout.
