Ruslan Providnikov floored Alvarado twice in the eighth round. It was the first time Alvarado has been knocked down in his career.

In the 10th, Provodnikov caught Alvarado against the ropes. Alvarado survived, but after the bell, he walked to the wrong corner, clearly dazed. Referee Tony Weeks tried to engage Alvarado in the corner before the 11th.

"I asked Mike two to three times, 'Do you want to continue?' " Weeks said. "And Mike said each time, 'No.' "

So Weeks stopped the fight for a TKO on the chair before the start of the 11th.

Spaniard Kiko Martinez pressed forward and punched his way to a world title by stopping undefeated IBF super bantamweight champion Jhonatan Romero in the sixth round in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Martinez charged out from the opening bell winging wide power punches. A left hand caught Romero against the ropes midway through the first round and had him in some trouble.

Romero came out in the second and wanted to box and move, but was unable to keep the Spaniard at bay. Martinez repeatedly snapped back the head of the champion with power punches.

A clash of heads opened a sizable cut to Romero's left eye in the fourth.

The end came in the sixth round, when a series of shots hurt Romero and wobbled him. Martinez landed a combination to the head with Romero trapped in a corner and the referee stepped in and waved an end to the bout with the champion bloodied and badly staggered.
*The Ring Magazine Featherweight Title

Miguel Angel "Mikey" Garcia floored Juan Manual Lopez twice and, despite losing his WBO featherweight title on the scales, pushed his unbeaten streak to 32 fights with a fourth-round technical knockout win.

Garcia, 25, stuck Lopez repeatedly with a stiff jab, picked his shots well, and regularly snapped back the head of Lopez.

A jab, straight right combination caught Lopez in the mouth at 2:09 of Round 2 and put the former world champion on his backside. He made it to his feet and following the mandatory eight-count was allowed to continue. By the end of the round, however, the Puerto Rican's face was already marked and beginning to swell.

Lopez stepped up his aggression in Round 4, but was repeatedly met as he came forward with clean shots from Garcia, who controlled distance well and showed no signs of being drained from attempting to make the 126-pound limit. A right hand from Garcia, followed seconds later by a left to the side of the head, put Lopez down flat on his back midway through the fourth round. He again got to his feet, but was clearly hurt and stood on shaky legs. At 1:35, the referee waved an end to the bout.

Notes
*Mikey Garcia 31-0 (26 KOs) vs. Juan Manuel Lopez 33-2 (30 KOs)
*Garcia entered as the world featherweight champion according to The Ring Magazine. Lopez, a 4.35-to-1 betting underdog, was ranked as the #10 featherweight contender by the same publication.
*Garcia came in two pounds over the 126-pound limit and chose not to attempt to lose the extra weight. Thus, he was stripped of the WBO title and for the fight it was only at stake for Lopez. Garcia also paid Lopez a reported six-figure fine to allow the fight to continue.

*Garcia was five months removed from a badly broken nose in his bout against Orlando Salido (39-11-2). The injury, caused by a headbutt, sent the fight prematurely to the scorecards and required surgery to repair.
*After the bout, Garcia said he felt he could still make the featherweight limit in the future, but indicated he would likely move up to 130 pounds.

Thus, he was stripped of his title and for the fight it was only at stake for Lopez.

Summary
* In the featured bout of ESPN Friday Night Fights, Molina dominated the first four rounds walking the less experienced Klimov down and landing a number of effective power shots. However, as the bout progressed, Klimov's game plan became more evident. Klimov was constantly moving backwards and to the left and right with Molina walking straight forward and blindly following him. The turning point came in round five, where the fleet footed Klimov began outscoring Molina by landing numerous punches in bunches from the outside in consistent combinations and flurries. Molina was not hurt, but he was unable to keep up with such a pace nor change his style into a technical fight. With no counter plan, Molina allowed himself to get outpointed for six rounds in a row by the busier and consistent Klimov.

* Facebook ESPN viewers gave Klimov nine rounds to one because he was the busier fighter and throwing more punches by volume. With respect to commentator Teddy Atlas and one of the judges, Klimov appeared to do more than enough to win and two judges and the Facebook ESPN viewers got it right. Molina appeared to have something missing from his game than before, as he fought with less desire than he had before he fought Antonio DeMarco for the title and lost. Judge Hunter Walton's 96-94 overall for Klimov was accurate and fair.

*Fighting in foreign territory as the odds underdog, the unbeaten 16-0 Russian Klimov wins a world title shot in a legitimate upset, perhaps against the winner of the vacant WBC interim lightweight title bout between Omar Figueroa versus Nihito Arakawa in July 2013.

Notes
*Andrey Klimov 15-0 (8 KOs) vs. John Molina 25-2 (20 KOs)
*Klimov entered as a 2.55-to-1 betting underdog.
*It was the second fight for Molina under trainer Robert Garcia.

Father time will eventually catch up with Floyd Mayweather Jr., but it may very well be long after he has retired.

In the main event of Showtime's pay-per-view card at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, the 36-year-old Mayweather Jr. proved yet again that his skills are indeed intact and his place atop the world's pound-for-pound rankings is valid, as he cruised to his 44th win against an outmatched but game Robert Guerrero (31-1-1).

The champion was simply too quick defensively and too fast-handed, as round after round Mayweather stuck Guerrero with lead right hands and left the Californian missing and with little opportunity to build any momentum.

"That's why he's undefeated." Guerrero said. "He was a little better than I thought. He was barely slipping away from the punches. I thought I'd catch him."

The eighth round was the strongest for Mayweather Jr. Midway through a punch opened a cut above his opponent's left eye and by the end of the round, Guerrero was clearly hurt and bloodied.

{| punchstatstable-r

Much of the same continued for the remainder of the bout, with Guerrero pressing forward, but being caught with clean punches while being unable to land. He showed a good chin and had some opportunities, but never could connect with the big punch and Mayweather usually tied him up on the inside.

Mayweather Jr. (44-0) apologized to the crowd after the fight for being unable to deliver the knockout he had hoped for, but revealed a swollen right hand that he said he injured midway through the fight. The injury, he said, forced him to box more in the second half rather than go for a knockout.

"I take my hat off to Robert Guerrero." Mayweather said. "He's a true warrior. It was blood, sweat and tears in there tonight, what can I say. Everybody was saying, at age 36, that I wasn't as sharp as I used to be, that I didn't look good in the Cotto fight. But Cotto is a future hall of famer and a great fighter. Guerrero was pressing the attack, but I had good work for this fight.”
In winning the fight, Mayweather reclaimed the same Ring title he gave up nearly five years ago, when he temporarily retired in June 2008. *As a build up to the fight, Showtime aired a 60-minute documentary "30 Days In May" and "All Access" which chronicled the month leading up to the fight.
*The price of the pay-per-view was $59.95 for standard definition and $69.95 for high definition.
*It was the 10th overall and 7th consecutive fight for Mayweather Jr. at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was Guerrero's second appearance at the venue. In his previous fight there in April of 2011, he scored a unanimous decision over Michael Katsidis (27-3).
*On March 28th, Guerrero was arrested at John F Kennedy International Airport and charged with illegally traveling with a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun and three high capacity unloaded magazines. Gerrero, allegedly, declared the gun was in luggage he planned to check for his 8:10 a.m. Although the gun was unloaded, he was arrested for violating New York’s gun possession laws which require the firearm be licensed in the state of New York regardless if licensed elsewhere.
*It was the first fight for Mayweather Jr. since serving a two-month jail sentence in the summer of 2012 for a domestic violence charge brought by his longtime girlfriend and mother of his children from a 2010 incident. This was further spotlighted by Guerrero's father, Ruben, referring to both Mayweather Jr. and Mayweather Sr. as "woman beaters" at the final pre-fight press conference and declaring, "We're going to beat that woman beater down."
*Among the around 19,000 which were in attendance were Evander Holyfield, Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins, Miguel Cotto, Danny Garcia, Austin Trout, Victor Ortiz, Amir Khan, Andre Berto, rapper Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs, and the NBA's Rajon Rondo.
*Mayweather Jr. wore gold trunks with black trim and was escorted to the ring by rapper Lil' Wayne. Guerrero wore red trucks with white trim and came to the ring wearing a t-shirt which read "God Is Great".

Danny Garcia floored Zab Judah in the eighth round and held on late to retain his WBA and WBC light welterweight titles and push his unbeaten streak to 26 fights.

The challenger was in a bit of trouble in the fifth round when a straight right hand from Garcia caused Judah's legs to buckle. Judah was staggered again just a minute into the sixth, but was able to gather himself enough to keep his feet.

The lone knockdown came in Round 8 when a counter right hand from Garcia slipped through Judah's guard and put him on his backside for a three count. The punch also opened a big gash under Judah's left eye.

Judah came on strong, however, over the last three rounds and hurt Garcia with a left hand in the tenth. In the eleventh, following a break to retie Judah's shoe, the two men traded power punches, highlighted by a right hook from the challenger. A clash of heads in the final seconds opened a small cut on Garcia's hairline.

Another bad clash in round twelve opened a cut above Judah's left eye and an inch-long, vertical cut in the center of Garcia's forehead that bled down over his face.

With the win, Garcia was expected to meet the winner of Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse which was scheduled for May 18th.
For the third time in as many fights, 38-year-old Argentine Sergio Martinez came off the mat to retain his title as middleweight champion of the world.

The champion moved with his hands low and outworked challenger Martin Murray over the first three rounds. Murray picked up his pace in the fourth and outlanded Martinez for the first time in the fight. Martinez was allowed time to recover from a low blow in the round. In Round 6, a cut opened to the outside of Martinez's left eye.

The scored knockdown came in Round 8 when Murray connected with a straight right hand that caught Martinez flushly on the jaw as he was backpedaling and put him on his backside for a couple seconds. Martinez went to the mat again in Round 10 following a glancing punch, but it was ruled by the referee to be a slip.

Through nine rounds, the fight was very close with many having it scored even. The champion, despite complaining of pain in his left hand, outworked Murray in the eleventh and twelfth to claim the win in front of his home crowd.

Timothy Bradley came into the fight with something to prove, and for two rounds it appeared it would cost him dearly.

A boxer, Bradley is not known to be a one-punch-knockout fighter, but opted to stand toe-to-toe with challenger Ruslan Provodnikov (22-1) for the first six minutes and was in danger of being stopped. The champion, who was staggered numerous times during the fight and was forced to take a knee in the final seconds of round twelve, did enough in the judges' eyes, however, to maintain his WBO welterweight title and push his record to 30-0. The fight, a credit to the sport, was well summed up by promoter Bob Arum who acknowledged "Tonight there's no losers."

A straight right hand badly staggered Bradley in the opening round and seconds later he fell forward and went down from what was ruled to be a slip. Much of the same continued in round two with Bradley being caught again and, by the end of the round, the champion was backed against the ropes taking heavy punishment.
Apparently this was enough to get Bradley to listen to his corner who implored him to stop trading punches and instead utilize his quality boxing skills. Over the next three rounds, the champion moved, worked nicely with a jab, and threw punches in flurries to gain rounds.

Bradley maintained his momentum into the sixth round, until a shot from Provodnikov wobbled him in the final minute. For the final thirty seconds, the two men exchanged incessantly with no concern for defense.

Rounds seven through ten were strong ones for Timothy Bradley. In the eighth, a cut opened under Provodnikov's left eye from an accumulation of punches and in the ninth, Bradley's strongest, a slit opened to the eyelid of the same eye. The champion continued to pour it on in the tenth as it appeared Ruslan may be starting to fade. By the end of the round, Provodnikov's left eye was swollen and looking as though it could potentially bring a halt to the bout. Prior to the start of the eleventh, trainer Freddie Roach told his fight that if he didn't show him something, he would stop the fight.

The challenger opened the eleventh with renewed energy and looked to be going for the knockout. Each man threw wide, power punches in the round with both landing.

In the final round, Bradley came out looking to box his way to a win, before a landed power punch from the challenger again drew him into an exchange. A right hand sent Bradley stumbling, and an accumulation, while backed into a corner, caused him to take a knee at 2:49 for a count of seven. The bell rang to end the fight before the two men could exchange any further.
That's when I brought a young man named Terry Norris here to New York, and he fought another legend at New York's Madison Square Garden. If you all remember, we retired that legend. So we're about to retire another legend on Saturday night. When I brought Terry Norris here, nobody gave him a chance. The craftiness and the ring experience of the legend that we fought was supposed to be too much for Terry Norris, and you all remember what happened.

In just his sixteenth professional bout, underdog and late replacement Evgeny Gradovich dethroned IBF featherweight champion Billy Dib in the main event of ESPN's Friday Night Fights in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

The champion Dib (35-1) looked to move and land, while Gradovich, nicknamed "The Mexican Russian" for his aggressive style, came forward throughout and connected with bigger shots.

The physical scrap saw each man warned in the third round to clean up the action after head clashes, elbows, and hitting on the break. By the end of the round, Dib was bleeding from the nose and had developed swelling above his left eye.

A left hand in the fourth caught Dib off balance and sent him stumbling backward. Also in the fourth a cut opened the left side of Dib's head, above the ear, from what the referee rules and unintentional elbow.

In Round 8, both men were deducted a point for holding.

By the end of the bout, Dib was bleeding heavily from a cut above his right eye, while Gradovich's face was marked up and he had swelling to his left cheek. Referee Eddie Claudio, who was was forced to separate the fighters often, was covered with blood following the twelfth round.

It was the first defeat for Dib since October of 2008, when he lost via unanimous decision to WBO champion Steven Luevano (35-1-1).

Notes
*Gradovich took the fight on a month's notice after Luis Franco (11-1) withdrew, originally citing his dissatisfaction with his $20,000 purse and then saying he was retiring from the sport.
Adrien Broner defended his WBC lightweight title and cruised against a spirited but outgunned Gavin Rees in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

A single right uppercut put Rees on his back 55 seconds into Round 4. Rees was up at the count of five. Broner continued to pound away for the remainder of the round and, prior to the start of the fifth, Rees's trainer Gary Lockett suggested that they should stop the fight.

A left hand to the body in the final minute of Round 5 drew a grimace from Rees and sent him to a knee. Broner closed the round peppering Rees against the ropes, causing Lockett to come up on the ring apron and wave the towel.

Rees gave a good effort and looked to take the fight to Broner early, but could not match Broner's power and accuracy.

Lucas Matthysse gave credence to the idea that he is among most avoided fighters in the world.

In the main event of Showtime's televised boxing card in Las Vegas, Nevada, Matthysse (32-2) took little time in dispatching hefty underdog Mike Dallas Jr. (19-2-1).

In the final minute of the opening round, the Argentinian connected with a sudden and short, counter right hook that knocked Dallas Jr. out immediately and sent him crashing face-first to the mat. Veteran referee Robert Byrd began counting, but stopped short and waved an end to the bout with Dallas Jr. lying motionless.

It was the 31st knockout for Matthysse in 33 professional wins. His last win to come by means other than a knockout was in 2008 over Carlos Adan Jerez (27-10-3).
