On the paper Abdoul "Siki" Sow of Belgium looked an easy foe for debuting Norwegian lightweight Ivar Ellertsen. Sow,born in Senegal, had a 1-7-1 record, while Ellertsen had been a feared KO-king in the amateur ranks. The Norwegian got more than his share of trouble. Southpaw Sow threw long swings from his tight guard, sometimes hitting with open gloves. Ellertsen had to go down for a rest in the 2nd. In the 3rd he pulled himself together a shook Sow with powerfull rights. Sow was in excellent condition and dominated in the 5th and 6th. Aftenposten felt the draw verdict was a typical home decision.

3000 attended the Njaardhallen.

Sow was back in Oslo exactly 6 years later in a bout with the Finn Erkki Meronen.

"Horacio Accavallo of Argentina, his right eye swollen shut and his face masked in blood, kept his world flyweight championship Saturday night with a unanimous 15 round decision over Efren (Alacran) Torres of Mexico. The fight, looking much like a street brawl most of the way, kept 25,000 fans howling in Luna Park, the big downtown sports stadium. The 32 year old champion survived a 6th round knockdown from one of Torres murderous right crosses and from the 4th round on kept wiping and blinking blood from his right eye. With the bout just about even after 10 rounds, Accavallo really salted the fight away in the 12th and 13th rounds. He captured the 12th by a big margin with a series of flurries that tore Torres' right ear lobe and reopened a cut under the Mexican's left eye. In the 15th Accavallo expertly flurried in the final minutes." -Associated Press
But as the rounds wore on Jofre started to find the range with his deadly left hook. In the tenth and final round, Jofre landed solidly and Yaoita went down like he was shot. Then, to everyone's amazement, he got up at seven. But Jofre was not to be denied. He fired a short but devastating left hook to the jaw. Ten seconds later it was all over.

Novice heavyweight Hans Jorgen Jacobsen of Denmark outpointed
the Italian Benito Confin over 4 rounds.

This rematch was not a good one. Jacobsen looked
stiff and scared, perhaps fearing the right swing from Confin
which had knocked him ou in their first meeting in
Sweden two months ago.

Confin threw swings again, Jacobsen jabbed. It didn't
lead to anything. Often
the two 97 kg men collided and wrestled.

Jacobsen told to the press that he had felt
good for most of the afternoon, but in his corner
waiting for the first bell, he almost had a
fit of anxiety and became paralyzed.

According to a report of this bout published many years later by the Tacoma News Tribune (Tacoma, WA, USA) on July 2, 1919: "Those who can hark back that far will recall that the original Jack Dempsey, the Nonpareil, was knocked out by La Blanche, the marine, who used the pivot blow. This blow is delivered by closing the eyes, turning rapidly on one heel and letting the right go at random. La Blanche was taking something of a beating from the Nonpariel when he retreated and went through the evolution. His flying fist caught Jack Dempsey flush on the jaw and the Nonpariel dropped to the mat and the count. After that the original Jack Dempsey dropped from sight. There is a very lugubrious poem written about his unmarked grave in Oregon. After reading the poem the New York boxing commission barred the pivot blow, partly out of respect to the memory of the Nonpariel, and partly to prevent another poem."

Chuvalo had a cut on the side of his nose as early as the 2nd round. Ramos had to undergo repairs for a cut near his left eye after the 3rd. A right hand to the head early in the 5th round dropped Ramos on the seat of his pants. He got up at three but referee Zach Clayton gave him the required eight count. Sensing a chance to end it quickly, Chuvalo stormed at the Mexican and threw punches from all angles. Ramos, pinned against the ropes and taking heavy punishment, threw up his hands appealing to the referee that he had enough." -Associated Press
Referee Overview
A boxing referee is the most important individual in a boxing ring during a match. Responsible for the maintaining the flow of the match, as well as assessing point deductions and administering counts; the outcome of a match many times is decided by how well versed the referee may be. Referee training is an ongoing task and the best in the sport will continually train to better their skill level.
Time Frame
Training for boxing referees is not standardized throughout the sport or its many organizations. While the rules may loosely mirror each other, small variations do exist, so knowing the rules for each governing body is a must. Before you begin the process of applying, you will want to begin your training to be a referee. Start by obtaining a rule book for the boxing organization you wish to work for. A clear understanding of the rules will help you better do your job.
Referees Responsibilities Authority
*(1) The referee's primary responsibility shall be to maintain the safety and welfare of the boxers at all times.

*(2) Before starting a contest, the referee shall determine the name of the chief seconds for each boxer. The chief second shall be responsible for the conduct of the boxer s other seconds during the contest.

*(3) The referee shall call boxers and their chief seconds into the ring at the beginning of each contest for instructions.

*(4) The referee shall not allow any person other than the boxers and the event physician to enter the ring during a round.

*(5) The referee shall inspect the boxers' bodies and gloves to make sure that no substances have been applied to the detriment of an opponent.

*(6) Referees who are event officials shall pass a physical examination by the event physician within twenty-four hours prior to an event for the purpose of determining their physical ability to referee the contest. If such examination indicates the referee is physically unable to referee the contest, such inability shall be noted on the prefight physical form and immediately be reported to the inspector.

*(7) The referee shall have the authority to stop a contest any time he/she thinks it is too one-sided, or if either boxer is in such condition that to continue might subject them to serious injury.

*(8) The referee shall not make a disqualification decision based on one unintentional, low-blow foul. However, if two previous warnings for such fouls have resulted in point deductions, the third foul may be grounds for disqualification.

*(9) The referee has authority to decide any matters that arise during a contest and are not covered by these rules.

*(10) If a boxer receives an injury that the referee thinks shall incapacitate the boxer, the referee shall ask the event physician to examine the boxer. The event physician shall provide the referee with an opinion as to the seriousness of the injury and either the event physician or the referee shall stop the contest if the injury is serious. When a referee calls the event physician into the ring, the referee shall direct the timekeeper to cease keeping time while the event physician examines the boxer.

*(11) The referee may penalize a boxer who fouls an opponent during a contest, by charging such boxer with the loss of points. The referee shall immediately notify the judges of the number of points to be deducted.

*(12) The referee shall stop the contest if the boxer's chief second determines that a contest should be stopped, and immediately signals the referee by stepping onto the ring apron.

*(13) When a boxer resumes boxing after having been knocked down or fallen or slipped to the floor, the referee shall wipe all foreign material from the boxer's gloves.

*(14) The referee shall give a boxer injured by a low-blow foul up to five minutes to recover. Should the boxer be unable to continue at the end of the recovery period, the referee shall declare that the boxer has signaled his/her desire to stop boxing as described in WAC 36-12-130 (1)(b)(iv).

*(15) Prior to an event, each referee shall disclose to the department all considerations, including reimbursement for expenses that will be received from any source for participation in the event. The disclosure shall be made on a form supplied by the department.

*(16) A decision rendered at the termination of any contest may be changed by the department if the department determines that one of the following occurred:

(a) There was collusion affecting the result of any contest,

(b) The compilation of the scorecard of the judges shows an error which would mean that the decision was given to the wrong contestant, or

(c) There was a violation of the laws or rules governing contests, which affected the result of any contest.

Identification The Role Of The Referee
There are several different types of fouls that you will have to call in the ring. You must be able to identify these fouls immediately. While the list is long there are some major fouls that you will want to be aware of; these include hitting below the belt, holding, tripping, or otherwise wrestling an opponent. A boxer may not hit with any part of the body except for a gloved fist, hitting with elbows, shoulders, forearms, or the side, and back of the glove are illegal as well. Subtle fouls, such as punches to the back of the head, punching an opponents back, or punches thrown to the kidneys, must be called as well.

referee have the following roles:

*Gives instructions to both boxers before the fight
*Determines when to start or stop a count when a fighter is down
*Determines when a foul is so egregious that a warning should be given or points taken away
*Signal when the round is over
*Determines when one fighter's health will be endangered by more blows and thus, stops the fight.
In the past, referees were involved in judging the fight. However, that role has been progressively replaced by a panel of judges, except for domestic fights in some countries.
Referee Function
While calling fouls is a major part of a referee's function, you will want to be aware of some perfunctory duties. When a boxer is knocked down you will be in charge of administering a count, as well as making sure that the scoring boxer retires to a neutral corner. A referee also holds the sole discretion in stopping a match for fouls as well assuring the safety of the boxers.
Referee Attire
Normally, a white or blue Oxford shirt is worn, as well as black slacks, black leather shoes and a black bow tie. Latex gloves are sometimes worn for sanitary reasons. For professional matches a patch is usually worn on the left breast bearing the insignia of the organization sanctioning the fight. The referee may also wear a patch on his left sleeve bearing the flag of his home country. This is especially common in matches between fighters from two different countries.
Potential
A boxing referee goes through levels throughout his tenure. If you are able to quickly master your craft you may advance through levels one, and two faster than others. Level three referees tend to make better money, and gain notoriety more often, so always remember that all eyes are on you.
Notes
There is something mysterious about the facts in this fight. Or the record of Kid Silent.

In 1972 one Kid Silent debuted in Oslo in the
light heavyweight division against Norwegian
debutant Harald Skog ( who later fought for
the World light heavyweight title against Victor Galindez ).

Kid Silent's opponent in the fight on this site, is the
light welterweight Jo Kimpuani. The fight took place
in 1973, and the Kid Silent from Oslo 1972
is probably not the same boxer as the
Kid Silent here.
"It was a rough, mauling encounter but devoid of spectacular incidents. Cerkan showed considerable improvement over his previous bouts here, particularly in the use of a left to the body, but Gross' habit of fighting from a shell prevented Pete from showing to particular advantage. Gross occasionally came from his shell with sweeping swings at Cerkan's head, but he landed few of these and when they did land didn't damage the Pe Ell blond. Cerkan hurt Gross with the first punch of the scrap, a digging left to the body and also had him groggy in the fifth round from punches to the head. Cerkan was out in front all the way and [the] bout was somewhat monotonous." <i>Tacoma Daily Ledger</i>

The chief second shall be responsible for the conduct of the boxer's other seconds during the contest.
