Bello died July 20, 1963--only two weeks after he had appeared in his first main event in Madison Square Garden and on national television--losing a split decision to veteran Gaspar Ortega. Bello, 20, was found life-less in a hallway of a tentament in the Bronx section of New York City.
On the stairway near the body police found three empty envelopes of the type used to package powdered narcotics, and needle marks on his left forearm, indicating that he had been using drugs. An autopsy confirmed the suspicion that he had died of "acute intravenous narcotism."
He had served as the physical director for steamships on cruises to Brazil, and during the war he saw service in the merchant marine and the Coast Guard, of which he was also a physical director. He was twice a member of ship crews that were torpedoed. He had been ailing since he was shot in the back by a member of a German submarine crew while swimming away from a torpedeoed ship during the war. The spelling of his last name in the census is BOLDUC. With this information, the currently listed death date could be incorrect. There is no listing in the SSDI for a Balduc (spelled either way) with birth years of 1903 or 1904. *Willie Beecher's correct birth name is uncertain. It was stated to be "Abraham Shankar" when he died, so that may be correct. In early years it was reported to be "Vilvill" (Wilhelm?) Bacher. However, his obituary in the NY Times (2 Apr 1957), the 1920 & 1930 censuses list his name as William Beecher.

*According to George Beecher, Willie's son, who is also a retired boxer, he had over 400 bouts and was never knocked out. However, research shows that the total was probably nearer 150 and Beecher was knocked out by Harry Trendall on January 1, 1912, and by Johnny Harvey on June 9, 1917.

*Willie Beecher served in the United States Marines from 1917 to 1919. He returned to ring activity in 1920 and 1921, but then retired and, afterward, managed boxers and was also a judge. Willie was the older brother of fellow fighter Charlie Beecher.

*Managed by Dan Morgan starting January 1917.

*In the 1920 census, he lists his occupation as a Boxing Promoter.
Sandoval retired after suffering a brutal knockout defeat to Gaby Canizales, in defense of his WBA Bantamweight Title. Sandoval was knocked out and fell unconscious a few minutes after the fight. He stopped breathing for about three minutes and was rushed to the local hospital, where he remained in critical condition for the next few nights. Sandoval had life saving brain surgery. Had he not had the brain surgery, doctors prognosed he would have died. Because of the type of procedure involved in the surgery, he would not be allowed to fight again as he would have been in greater risk of dying. It's believed that Richie is the only known "survivor" in the boxing world from this type of brain injury. Matt - I did not write an autobiography - this is from my user's page. All I did was add my name to the list of Boxing Historians. I've done a lot of good work on BoxRec and contributed good info to the Wiki. Nothing I do seems to please you, so I just consider the source.
Matt - This is Tony's wife "speaking". No one knows better than me how many years Tony has put into becoming a "full-fledged" historian. His collection (as he calls it) is much more than photos. He is contacted by people from all over the United States for information. In many ways, he is like Hank Kaplan (his mentor) - collecting professional and personal information on fighters for a more complete picture. With the hard work and volumes of time he has put into this plus the public recognition he is getting, I felt he should be listed in the Boxing Historians category since he is truly a boxing historian and I was the one who added him in. I will rewrite his info to 3rd person.

This was a comment stated in his obituary. While the actual war ended in May of 1945, what most people don't realize is that our troops remained in Europe for a longer time under the occupation & rebuilding phases. The military personnel who were there during that time are considered, by the military, to have served during this war - thus giving him veteran status. Then there's also the possibility that he "fudged" his age so he could serve. This is known to have happened, just like it used to in boxing. - Tony Triem

I thought this series of "Death Year" categories was to start only from when the Wiki was launched, back in 2005 or 2006. Otherwise, if we are now going to have such a category for every year of deaths, that's at least another hundred potential categories. Lordy! That begins to make a mockery of what "category" means. Category should be a relative limited family of pages. If you start to have hundreds of categories--many with only a handful of entries--it starts to lose its purpose. Let's all please be a bit more cautious before creating a "new" category. I think this one should be deleted. --Ric 07:57, 7 April 2007 (CDT)
You raise a valid point. On the other hand, I feel that all information should be categorized in a way that researchers can find it quickly & efficiently. While a researcher working on Ring Fatalities would be able to find their information easily, a researcher looking for those who died in a specific year would not. As far as I know, there is no current database or publication that provides this information in its totality by year. I think that to be totally accurate for research purposes, information should not only be as acurate as possible, but should be categorized so researchers can find what they need without spending hours and hours of searching because a category is not listed. As an example, if I, as a researcher, wanted to find a listing of all deaths in 2001, whether in or out of the ring, how would I find that information without looking through every person listed in the BoxRec database? Just my thoughts... Tony

Debate Continued
Tony, I wonder how many researchers would really be looking into, for example, who all died in 2001, to make such a category worthwhile. For what reason? Anyway, assuming there would be many who'd like this info, you can use the search box on every page here, and type in the search term "died 2001". Although you will get some results you were not searching for, you will also get most, if not all, pages where it is specifically mentioned that a death occurred in 2001. Try it. --Ric 10:26, 7 April 2007 (CDT)

Discussion Ended ?!?
Ok Ric, I tried it and did get a listing. Why someone would want that info I think is a mute point when it comes to research. I have been asked for information from researchers that I thought was strange, but who am I to question their reasons why?!? I think we're just here to provide the best information we can in the most easily accessible format. I have no problem deleting the link. This is why you're here, Ric - you're the man!! Tony
