Wilson was a quite prospect starting out his pro career. He notched wins against the usual suspects, padding his record and gaining experience. Moving at a steady pace, Wilson clashed with another unbeaten prospect in Terry McGroom. The only name Wilson had on his record up until this fight was a KO win over Mitch Rose. Rose was the first boxer to stop the then unbeaten Butterbean in the second round. Wilson and McGroom fought to a ten round draw. In Wilson's next fight he again fought another unbeaten heavyweight in James Stanton. This time Darroll came away with a decision win.

At the same time HBO was setting up its "Night of the young heavyweights" show which showcased the up and coming heavyweights. Shannon Briggs was being touted as a future champ and was one of the main attractions on the card. Wilson was brought in to be Shannon Briggs' opponent, as he was believed to be a sure win. What the big suits in HBO did not consider was Wilson was a legit undefeated heavyweight who had been in the ring with some decent undefeated prospects before and knew how to fight.

The end result ... Briggs was cut, battered, dropped and stopped by the third round. Wilson looked great. He took Briggs early flurries and countered his way into the fight. He also showed the power that many said he lacked.

Wilson was brought back to HBO a fight later to meet David Tua, another rising heavy who had also won on the previous "young heavy's" card. The hard hitting Tua KO'ed Wilson in one round with his lethal left hook. Wilson had lost, but was still an attraction and got his second chance when he met touted prospect Courage Tshabalala. Courage was a once beaten heavyweight like Wilson who was also trying to get back in the mix with an impressive win. The two staged one of the best fights of the year. In the first round Courage dropped Wilson with a jab 25 seconds into the fight. Things looked even worst for Wilson when he was dropped again in the third, this time much harder, with a right hand. Courage tried to finish in the forth but Wilson fought back with the heart he showed in the Briggs fight and dropped Courage for the count.

Wilson's next big fight he lost to Terrence Lewis by fifth round TKO. After a win against Anthony Willis he was TKO'ed in his next fight to the hard hitting top contender David Izon. In that fight Wilson's own power surfaced early and Izon was dropped in the first round, but the silver medallist proved too much for Wilson. Since then Wilson slipped and never regained his old form, losing fights he would have previously should've won, like his KO loss to journeyman Frankie Swindle, decision loss to journeyman Zuri Lawrence and a two round blowout to ancient Tim Witherspoon.

After beating Bert Cooper in 4 rounds Wilson would go on to lose 4 straight matches to Jean Francois Bergeron, Ray Mercer, Oliver McCall and Sedreck Fields before finally hanging up the gloves in 2006. He had fought plenty of big name guys and had his fair share of big pay-days. Remembered for his big heart, fearlessness, great counter-punching skills and KO power. His son, Jaywon Woods, campaigned in the cruiserweight division.

After getting knocked out in the first round in Australia by Alex Leapai in December 2011, Troy Weida was suspended indefinitely in Iowa on March 3, 2012 after losing badly in a four round bout against Missouri southpaw Galen Brown. After getting knocked out in the third round in June 2012 by Mark de Mori in Australia, Weida was listed for an upcoming fight on Boxrec scheduled for September 8, 2012, against Joe Stofle in Iowa. For this bout to occur, Troy Weida's indefinite suspension preventing him from fighting again would have to be lifted by Iowa State and ABC Boxing. Based on information provided to Boxrec from Iowa, Weida's indefinite suspension has not been lifted by the Iowa Athletic Commission or ABC Boxing. Weida's intended Davenport Iowa 'comeback' opponent, Joe Stofle, was suspended six times in the United States and Canada for poor performance and last fought in 2009. He had lost his previous 7 fights.

Weida was inactive between December 2005 till his comeback in June 2011. The only fighter with a winning record Weida defeated in the last decade of his career was Grant Cudjoe of Grenada.

Weida's career record at the time of his indefinite suspension was 46-24-2 with 33 kayos. He was knocked out 16 times. A closer look at Troy Weida's professional record shows 42 of his opponents did not have winning records. Among them were gatekeepers Reggie Strickland who held the record for most losses at 276 losses (Beaten by Kristian Laight in 2018) and Brian Yates who lost 86 professional bouts. Troy Weida's only wins since his suspension were a pair of second round stoppages in 2011 over 3-15-1 Jerry Simpson in Iowa City. Before that his last win was in 2004 over Reggie Strickland. The facts figured into the Iowa Boxing Commission decision to suspend Weida and protect him from greater harm.

Among better known heavyweight champions and contenders who Troy has faced are Wladimir Klitschko and Ray Mercer, and also Brian Nielsen, Rob Calloway, Attila Levin, Timo Hoffmann, Dale Crowe, Orlin Norris, Vincent Maddalone, Mike Mollo, Brian Minto and Owen Beck. Weida's best performance came in a 12 round loss for the vacant WBF Continental Americas Heavyweight title against Russell Chasteen in November 2002.
Amateur Career
* Tyrone Brunson won Pennsylvania Youth Silver Gloves, and Pennsylvania State Golden Gloves, but did not win a national tournament.
* The Web sites 'Fight News' and 'Sports Freak' claim his amateur record was 82-12.
Professional Career
* 19 consecutive first-round knockouts. Brunson broke the world record for consecutive first-round knockouts by Edwin Valero of Venezuela.
* Of Brunson's 19 bout first round knockout winning streak only one fighter in that streak had a winning record at the time, James Morrow, whose padded record was built on fighters with losing records as well. After losing to Brunson, Morrow would go 4-22-1.
* Brunson used to be promoted Lion Heart Boxing Productions, a United States boxing promotional company started in New Orleans, Louisiana, by Tax Attorney Edward B. Mendy. On July 9, 2007, Brunson signed with promoter Don King.
* In late 2007, Brunson filed for bankruptcy.
* In December 2009, he was floored for the first time, in the third round by future NABA light middleweight champion Carson Jones, who then attacked a confused Brunson on the ropes after he beat the count. Brunson, in a new situation, unable to make a style correction, got hit at will until the referee stopped the bout. Jones had discovered Brunson's critical weakness-dropping his left hand low after throwing a left jab-and capitalized on the flaw to expose Brunson as a limited fighter. Brunson tried but never regained his career momentum from that point.
* After losing to Carson Jones, between 2012 and 2015 Tyrone Brunson attempted and failed in five serious comeback attempts, losing to five solid winning fighters with a combined 93 wins, getting stopped three times, also losing an eight round decision and a ten round decision.
* Attempted yet another comeback in 2016, defeating Kermit Cintron but losing to Brandon Adams and Serhii Bohachuk before retiring
Comments
*This was the second title unification fight in the history of the 105-pound division. The first took place on August 23, 1997, when Lopez knocked out Alex Sanchez in five rounds to unify the WBC and WBO titles. After he defeated Sanchez, Lopez said he wanted to give his WBO championship belt to his father. The statement prompted the WBO to take away Lopez's title and sanction a match between Eric Jamili and Mickey Cantwell to fill the vacancy. "It was enough for us," said the WBO president, Francisco Valcarcel, of Lopez's intention. "That's a public resignation." Dwight Manley, Lopez's agent, said Lopez should have had a hearing before the WBO took away his title. "He got no letter, he got no telephone call," Manley said.
*Michael Katz of the New York Daily News said Alvarez "seemed to be robbed" and called Lopez "overrated."
*The draw against Alvarez was the only blemish on the record of Lopez, who retired in 2001 with a record of 51-0-1.

Pedro Fernandez of the Cyber Boxing Zone reported:

WBC officiating deserves some additional rapping with the technical draw decision rendered in the 105 lb. title fight between unbeatens Rosendo Alvarez of Nicaragua and WBC poster boy Ricardo Lopez.

Alvarez was not in awe of the fact that he was facing a man who hadn't lost a fight in his life with 41 amateur wins coming before his 46 straight pro victories.

Adding luster to the 46 wins were 21 successful defenses of the WBC 105 lb. belt where Lopez of which Lopez lost maybe half a dozen rounds total.

But this night was going to be different as was indicated when Alvarez, 24-0-1, 16 KO's, came out and won the opening stanza by making Ricardo miss and land counter punches. It was quite clear that Lopez was a bit unraveled when he went back to the corner after the round.

The real wake up call came 15 seconds into the second round when Alvarez landed a right counter over a Lopez jab that put Ricardo down hard for the first time in his life.

From that point forward, El Finito was El Tenativ-o and rarely initiated any exchanges with the WBA titilist from Managua. Lopez had his moments, winning the third and fourth by real close margins on my card.

In the seventh round the two fighters butted heads and the result was a bad cut. The referee Arthur Mercante Sr. following WBC rules then took a point away from the uncut fighter or Alvarez in this case.

The fight resumed and the cut worsened. When the round ended, the Lopez corner headed by Nacho Berastein [sic], opted to not work on the cut. Berastein was confidant Lopez was ahead and he prodded the ringside physician to stop the fight, which he did.

When the scores were announced, Tommy Kazmarek of New Jersey had Lopez ahead 67-64, while another judge favored Alvarez 68-63. The third judge was Las Vegan Dalby Shirley who ruled the bout 66-66, a draw.
