It appeared Herring injured his right hand in round two, and the left hand in round four. Without excuse, Herring, a tall fighter with reach advantage, battled on and actually did very well landing some power shots in rounds four, five and six. Shafikov's challenge as the shorter but stronger fighter was to get inside, cut off the ring, and score with with Herring near or on the ropes. Shafikov patiently boxed for opportunities, and did best in round nine, where the tiring Herring got hit with a number of massive power shots but took them well and indicated to the referee he wanted to continue. In round ten, with furious power shots landing on Herring, Herring's trainer came onto the edge of the ring and stopped the bout to save his fighter from serious injury, ending the contest even though Herring wanted to continue. Herring's 15 bout resume did not include the sort of world class experience Shafikov's 40 bout resume had. Nonetheless Herring took the opportunity bout, and indicated after the bout he would be back. Shafikov, in the post fight interview, indicated Herring "was one tough customer. He took my best shots for ten rounds."

* Khurtsidze set the tempo in this USA Showtime WBO International title bout, coming forward in a straight line and slugging it out nonstop with both hands.
Gennady Golovkin versus Willie Monroe Jr. World Middleweight Title Bout on HBO
* In the main event of a boxing card televised on Home Box Office, Gennady Golovkin defended the World Middleweight title with a sixth round stoppage of southpaw Willie Monroe Jr. In the first minute of the first round, Monroe started fast with superior movement and jabs, but after that the pace slowed with GGG cutting off the ring and outworking him. In round two, Monroe stopped moving and got caught on the ropes twice offering GGG a target, who knocked Monroe down twice. Monroe changed his game plan in rounds three, four and five, and did better by jabbing and trading with him on the inside at close range in center ring, not allowing GGG to get outside range distance to land his power shots or catch him on the ropes. In round six, GGG came forward and quickly caught an off guard Monroe with power shots along the ropes, and Monroe went down to his knees, just beating the ten count of referee Jack Reiss. Referee Reiss was willing to give Monroe another chance, but Monroe did not respond. Reiss immediately and wisely stopped the contest. Reiss did a fine job separating the combatants during rare holds, and keeping the bout clean from start to finish. Champion Sergey Kovalev was at ringside.

* The scores at the time of the stoppage were 50-43, 50-43, and 49-44 for Golovkin, with Pat Russell giving Monroe the third.
* Willie Monroe Jr. rehydrated to 174 pounds, Gennady Golovkin to 172 pounds, the day of the fight.
* Willie Monroe Jr. is the first of the three middleweight fighting Monroes to fight for the world title. His father 24-4-2 super middleweight Willie Lee Monroe and great uncle 39-10-1 middleweight Willie (the Worm) Monroe who beat Marvin Hagler never got a title shot.

* The World Boxing Council interim World Middleweight title at stake for GGG only, as Monroe did not comply with WBC regulations which required Monroe to weigh in specifically for the WBC 30 days before the bout, and again seven days before the bout, and also complete a thorough WBC medical examination. Willie Monroe Jr. nonetheless appeared in top condition for this world middleweight title bout.

Reiss did a fine job separating the combatants during rare holds, and keeping the bout clean. Sergey Kovalev was at ringside.

* Monroe rehydrated to 174 pounds, Golovkin to 172 pounds, the day of the fight.
* Willie Monroe Jr. became the first of the three fighting Monroes to fight for a world title. His father, 24-4-2 super middleweight Willie Lee Monroe, and great uncle 39-10-1 middleweight Willie (the Worm) Monroe who beat Marvin Hagler, never got a shot at world title.

* The World Boxing Council interim World Middleweight title at stake for GGG only, as Monroe did not comply with WBC regulations which required Monroe to weigh in specifically for the WBC 30 days before the bout, and again seven days before the bout, and also complete a thorough WBC medical examination. Willie Monroe Jr. nonetheless appeared to be in top condition for this bout.

Brian Mitchell, often referred to as The Road Warrior, was a world champion boxer at super featherweight as recognized by both the WBA and IBF. He was forced to fight largely outside of his native South Africa due to a ban against the country by the major sanctioning bodies over its apartheid policies and racial segregation. Thus, in order to defend his title he had to travel abroad. In his seventh professional bout, Mitchell suffered the first and only loss of his career against Jacob "Dancing Shoes" Morake (15-6-2). The two would meet three more time with Mitchell winning a pair of unanimous decisions and scoring a TKO victory in their final meeting. It was following this fourth meeting that Morake died from injuries sustained in the bout.
After winning the WBA Title in 1986 from Alfredo Layne, Mitchell would go on to defend it twelve times in five years. In 1991, he went to the United States and met Tony Lopez to unify the WBA and IBF Titles. Their first crowd-pleasing bout ended in a draw. In order to secure a rematch with Lopez, Mitchell was forced to sacrifice his WBA belt, but earned the IBF title via unanimous decision. Following the victory, he retired from the ring for three years before returning for two bouts against moderate competition. The man, who some have argued is the greatest South African boxer of all time, retired with a career record of 45-1-3 (21 KOs) and through rematches became one of the few champions to beat everyone they faced. Upon retirement, Mitchell became a successful boxing trainer and guided at least two boxers to world titles, including Namibian Harry Simon and South African Cassius Baloyi. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2009.
*Using superior foot movement to avoid getting caught on the ropes, and well placed jabs, counter jabs, and power punches in center ring, Floyd Mayweather Jr. won a clear 12 round unanimous decision to go to 47-0.
*Maidana lost a point in round 10 for rough and tumble tactics when he used an elbow under the neck to wrestle Floyd to the canvas. Floyd also down in the first round, ruled a slip by referee Kenny Bayless.
* Floyd warned for elbowing in the ninth round, and for throwing low blows in the eleventh round.
*Controversy erupted 17 years after Tyson-Holyfield II at the MGM Grand, in the very same ring, with Tyson looking on at ringside, when Maidana apparently bit Floyd Mayweather's left hand in round 8. Commentator Paul Malignaggi noted Floyd was intentionally smothering Maidana's nose and mouth with the palm of his glove when he got bit. Floyd stated after the bout his left hand was numb for the rest of the bout, and he was essentially unable to use it. Maidana denied biting Floyd after the bout, saying Floyd's left glove was in Maidana's mouthpiece.
*After the bout, Floyd was asked about fighting Manny Pacquiao, and the door was left open for Floyd to fight Pacquiao in May 2015 if Pacquiao won his next bout. Floyd rated his performance in the rematch subpar versus his first bout with Maidana, but also stated he did follow his father's corner instructions.
