<br clear=all>

Bob Nestell became a highly-touted heavyweight in California in 1937, when he stopped both Lee Ramage and King Levinsky. Thought by some to be the next heavyweight champion from California, he showed good power and charisma, which translated well at the box office. In May 1937 he was matched with contender Bob Pastor in a potential title eliminator at Los Angeles's Wrigley Field in front of a crowd of around 27,000 that paid $85,000. After knocking down Pastor early in the bout, Nestell was knocked down and lost a wide decision.

Nestell came back after that and was defeated by former Light Heavyweight champion Maxie Rosenbloom. He was then matched with Lou Nova, who had replaced him as California's top heavyweight hope. Nova would knock Nestell out in the 8th round.

After the loss to Nova, it was clear Nestell had a glass chin, and had no further hope of seriously contending. Nestell was also not helped out by the fact that he often imitated Max Baer's clowning tactics and left his fragile chin exposed, as was the case in his knockout loss to Newsboy Millich.

Nestell joined the Army in 1942, where he was wounded by a grenade while fighting in the Italian campaign. He would spend 186 days in various hospitals, and was paralyzed from the waist down. Nestell would regain the use of his legs, and began working in the mines to regain his strength. He then began boxing again in 1946 and won over three lower level opponents, before ending his career with two straight knockout losses to Joe Kahut and Roy Hawkins.

Nestell has a small part in the 1937 Movie "Kid Galahad" (starring Edward G. Robinson, Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart) as one of the opponents.
ooking Back at Tough Boxer Alex “Ali” Baba
August 13th, 2018 Bad Brad

By Daniel Sisneros

Accra Ghana’s Alex “Ali” Baba made his Professional Debut on April 10, 1993 in his home country, and scored a 3rd round technical knockout over Tetteh Bonaparte beginning a pro career that would span 16 years.

He campaigned in Ghana, and by his 6th pro fight, he fought for and won the vacant African Boxing Union Flyweight Title with an 8th round tko over highly regarded Nigerian prospect Bashiru Thompson (8-1, 5 ko).

3 fights later he was facing England’s Harry Woods (8-1-2, 4 ko) for the vacant WBC International Flyweight Title. He took his second Title belt via 12 round decision. He would go on to make 4 successful defenses of that title, and never lost it in the ring.

Baba decided to move to the USA to further his career, and planted his self in Florida. He won 4 straight before he took his first pro defeat in 2000 via 8 round decision loss to Panama’s Leopoldo Arrocha. He picked up with 2 straight wins incuding a 3rd round tko over WBC Title challenger Javier Varguez to set up his first World Title Challenge.

Baba traveled to Thailand and challenged defending WBC Flyweight Champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (41-2, 23 ko). It was a good action bout, but when the Champion suffered a cut due to an accidental 4th round head butt, the bout was stopped and went to the scorecards giving the victory to the Thai World Champion.

It didn’t get any easier as Alex faced undefeated WBA World Champion & former U.S. Olympian “Little Hands of Steel” – Eric Morel (30-0, 17 ko) in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Baba dropped a lopsided unanimous decision in the non-title bout.

“Ali” Baba returned to to Ghana to regroup, and he added 3 more impressive wins to his ledger, building his record to 21-3, 16 ko’s. He was world ranked and got the call to move up a weight class and challenge Mexico’s Ricardo “Chapo” Vargas (35-9-3, 11 ko’s) for his NABF Bantamweight Title. This started a 4 fight losing streak, which ended with an 8 round draw against former World Champion Danny Romero on the undercard of Felix Trinidad/Winky Wright in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After 2 more losses including a very tough decision loss to former Texas State Champion Gabe Elizondo (18-1, 8 ko’s), he would get a big win against former NABF Champion and World Title Challenger – Miguel “Maikito” Martinez by 2nd round tko.

He earned the chance to challenge NABO champion Antonio Escalante (12-1, 7 ko) for the Title, but was stopped at the end of round 9 in a spirited bout. He bounced back with a good win against Jose German Cruz (16-4-1, 13 ko) via clear cut unanimous decision over 10 rounds.

That victory led to one last world title shot for the vacant IBA Bantamweight Title against Cecilio Santos (20-7-2, 12 ko). Baba dropped a unanimous decision to Santos, but bounced back with 3 straight wins including a landslide unanimous decision victory to claim the IBA Americas Bantamweight Title Belt. That would be Baba’s last pro boxing win.

He went out like the true champion he was, losing his last 5 bouts to high level opponents with a combined record of 99-10-7, including his final bout which was an 8th round tko stoppage at the hands of former World Champion Clarence “Bones” Adams (43-6-4, 19 ko) at the Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alex Baba ended his pro career with a record of: 26 wins, 16 losses, 1 Draw and 19 wins by knockout. An outstanding record in a career that lasted 16 years! Baba was well skilled, all heart and accomplished much, making Ghanaian boxing fans so proud.

Looking Back at Boxer Adriano “Amazing” Sanchez
August 14th, 2018 Bad Brad

By Daniel Sisneros

Albuquerque, NM’s Adriano Sanchez was an outstanding all around athlete who started his ring campaign as a kickboxer/boxer in the amateur ranks. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs organization as a pitcher but decided to turn professional in the boxing ring on August 8, 1998. He showed his “Fastball” with an explosive first round knockout over A.J. Martinez of Santa Fe, NM. It was a showcase for the potential punching power of Sanchez earning him the nickname of “Amazing Adriano”.

He defeated Denver’s Eugene Lopez, and fellow Albuquerquean Freddie Chavez both by ko’s to set up a showdown of New Mexican KO artists against Alamogordo, NM’s Jose Terrazas (5-2, 4 ko). In a power packed slugfest, it was Terrazas scoring the tko at 2:58 of round 4 to hand Sanchez his first defeat as a Pro.

Sanchez always had a great attitude towards his boxing career, and took the defeat in stride, getting right back to work and scoring a string of 3 first round ko wins, moving his record to 6-1, 6 ko’s and setting him up for his anticipated showdown with former ABF State Champion and fellow Albuquerque favorite – Marty Maestas. This night belonged to “Amazing Adriano” as he stopped Maestas in round 5 of a very spirited battle that had the fans roaring.

He heard the final bell for the first time in his next bout as he fought to a draw against Houston’s Amado Navarro via majority draw over 6 rounds with one judge seeing it 58-55 for Sanchez, but being over-ruled by the other two judges who had it 57-57.

4 months later he was matched against a man who was considered one of New Mexico’s hardest punchers in the division – Marcos “Pit Bull” Rodriguez of Los Lunas, NM. It was a “KO or be KO’d” showdown and after 1 wild round, it was Adriano Sanchez’s hand raised in victory, moving his record to 8-1-1, 8 by ko.

It was time for the rematch with the only man to go the distance with Sanchez – Amado Navarro, the bout again went the distance, but this time it was an 8 round victory for Navarro. Sanchez bounced back with a decision win against highly regarded Benjie Marquez of Denver.

One victory later, he found his self in an ESPN2 televised bout against world ranked former WBC Fecarbox and California State Champion – Carlos “El Elegante” Bojorquez (15-2-5, 11 ko). It was another “KO or be KO’d” bout, but this time it was Sanchez being stopped at 2:00 of round 1.

Sanchez returned to New Mexico to score a big win on the undercard of an ESPN2 televised event that featured two NABF Title bouts as co-main events in Bernalillo, NM against undefeated former amateur star – St. Louis’ Lamar Alexander (6-0) via 4 round decision. His bout did not make the ESPN2 broadcast, but it was a big win for Sanchez. It was also the last time he would have his arm raised in victory in a professional boxing ring.

Adriano had two more fights, being stopped by Colorado’s Earl “The New Generation” Jackson, and losing via decision in his final bout on June 3, 2004 to Rodney Moore in Lincoln City, Oregon.

It was a fun ride for Adriano’s fans and in the 6 years he never fought for a pro title, but delighted his New Mexico boxing fans with some devastating knockouts, and his humble attitude made him a definite fan favorite with the locals.

Dell Baxter is listed in Cornish, UT in the 1930 census. He was 20 years old and working for the railroad.

Del Baxter, the Utah boxing champion from Cornish

By Kenneth Godfrey For The Herald Journal Jan 28, 2017 (0)

On Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, The Herald Journal put together and published all the singled-out individuals from towns in Cache Valley found on Wikipedia. None of the 65 notables had Cornish roots.

However, for one decade, 1924-1934, a heavyweight boxer who resided in Cornish made news in more than 50 Herald Journal articles and was featured in newspaper stories that reached citizens in Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Nevada and even California.

On Sept. 3, 1929, this Cornishite, Del Baxter, won the heavyweight boxing championship of Utah by beating Salt Lake City’s Tony Clawson in a Labor Day fight which also celebrated the opening of the Logan Airport.

Four hundred fans called the contest the best fight ever staged in Logan. Both men, powerful and well conditioned, fought to the final gong as Baxter, the Cornish giant was awarded the decision and the crown following eight fast rounds.

Called by reporters the “Big Boy of Cornish,” the “Slow Moving Plowboy,” the “Pride of Cache Valley,” the “Bronze Cornish Giant,” and the “Cornish Battler” in a plethora of articles, Del was the youngest of the 11 children born to F. Alexander and Emily Baxter. A man of few words, he had, a nephew remembered, huge hands.

Later in his life, he seldom talked about his decade-long boxing career. Still, many folk, especially boxing fans in the West, knew who he was and of his ability to compete with the best fighters of his era and region.

His opponents included a former United States Marine heavyweight champion, the Pacific Coast heavyweight champion, and exhibition matches with former heavyweight champions Jack Dempsey, Primo Camera and Max Baer.

That even these contests came with some risk is evidenced by the fact that Dempsey, called “the world’s greatest fighter” in his exhibition with Salt Lake City’s “Battling Lamoreaux,” broke Lamoreaux’s jaw in two places. Baxter, in contrast, “got off with little punishment” in his one round with the Manassa Mauler.

Baxter made “a great hit with Utah ring fans” in his three other exhibition bouts against Dempsey. Well pleased with his power, Jack hired the Comish heavyweight as a sparring partner, and Baxter spent two weeks in Reno “working out with the old mauler.”

As Dempsey attempted a comeback, he and Baxter fought an exhibition in University Stadium in front of 4,000 spectators. Baxter not only fought exhibition bouts with Dempsey in Rock Springs, Wyoming, but also in Logan at the Utah Agricultural College Stadium, where he was cheered by his loyal Cache Valley fans.

A local newspaper headlined his UAC appearance with the words, “Logan (Baxter never resided in Logan) boxer has sparred three champs.” In the article following the headline, a reporter wrote, “Del Baxter, Logan heavyweight, perhaps has the distinction that no other heavyweight in Utah ever had, that of boxing three heavyweight champions of the world.”

In his Aug. 17, 1934 Ogden bout with Max Baer, Del was knocked to the canvas once then got up and was cheered for his gameness. In his one-round Logan exhibition with Signor Primo Camera, another heavyweight world champion called the Elephantine Italian, “Baxter stood up for two minutes like it was nobody’s business.”

As the date of Baxter’s Salt Lake City match with Ed Prante, former United States Marine heavyweight champion drew near, fans did not forget that Del in three exhibition bouts had stayed two full rounds each with the former title holders. “That’s a record,” a reporter wrote.

Del stood, according to some reports, 6 feet 2 inches and weighed about 200 pounds. He began his decade-long boxing career in Richmond, Utah with a second-round knockout. His opponent, Frank Cederholm, called Fort Douglas home.

In his next fight held in Preston, he lost a five-round decision to Grant Merrill. Then in his fourth bout held in the 1928 fall, Bob Brinton of Salt Lake City knocked him out in a match held in the state’s capitol city.

In the following 24 months, Baxter either won or was credited with a draw in 12 successive matches, which culminated in his winning the state heavyweight boxing crown in 1929 by defeating Salt Lake City’s own Tony Clawson. Clawson only agreed to fight Baxter provided the bout would be for the championship. Clawson declared that he had “cleaned up all the heavyweights in Salt Lake City” and Baxter was the only stumbling block in his path to the title.

The fight was a good one. Reporter Jack Christiansen called the match the most aggressive and bitterly fought battle seen in Logan for many many moons.

With the country well into what historian Timothy Egan called The Worst Hard Time, Baxter traveled to Denver, Colorado for a Sentinel Relief Fund-sponsored battle with George Manley. Manley, a reporter noted, carried Denver’s hope for a world light-heavyweight championship. A first class showman and a great fighter, Manley gave fans “a real monies worth” as he flashed about Baxter sinking stinging lefts to the body and rights to the head.

In the seventh round, Del was on his heels and his manager threw in the towel. Manley had just returned after a successful campaign in California and though Baxter was big, strong and tough, Manley possessed the greater boxing skills.

In an effort to improve his skills, Del went through what a reporter called real training in Butte, Montana working out with skilled boxers. Then he agreed to fight a “hard hitting” Butte heavyweight, Frank Prusich. Behind on points, Baxter in the third round connected with Prusich’s chin, stretching him out on the canvas.

Before ending his career, Del engaged in several Los Angeles boxing shows. In one held at the Wilmington Bowl, he knocked out his opponent in the first round. Returning to Cache Valley, Del spoke to the members of Logan’s Junior Chamber of Commerce and was credited with giving a very enjoyable talk.

After ending his boxing career, Del, his wife Myrtle and their four children moved to Pocatello, Idaho where he worked for a construction company. Then the Baxters followed the sun to Los Angeles, where he ran a tire company.

Though he may have seldom spoke about his decade-long boxing career, his skills brought entertainment to the Rocky Mountain region as residents sought something more than thinking of the Great Depression.
