Harry Kahn was a lightweight boxing champion of the state of Wisconsin, with an overall record of 37-19 (see championship belt in attached photo; in six of his fights no winner was named). Of those 37 wins, 14 were by knockout.

Some 90 years later, Kahn and his trilogy of fights with Billy Petrolle (the "Fargo Express") merited five separate mentions in a biography of promoter Jack Hurley. Kahn lost two rousing ten-round decisions to Petrolle, and their third fight was halted after a low blow by Petrolle. A December 3, 1927 article in the Duluth Herald (p. 16) describes their second fight: "...Kahn's great showing was beginning to impress the crowd favorably. Petrolle was bleeding from cuts over both eyes and his friends were showing no little concern. But Billy came back and outboxed Kahn in the fifth and sixth rounds. Kahn took the seventh, eight and ninth sessions. Petrolle was down for the count in the eighth and was badly beaten about the head and body in the ninth. In both of these rounds he was forced to cling to Kahn, while his knees were sagging and generally he looked to be through."

That Kahn took Petrolle to the limit twice demonstrated the depth of Kahn's skill and strength of his chin, as Petrolle had 66 KOs throughout his career. Petrolle was a world-class fighter by anyone's measure, having fought in Madison Square Garden, Yankee Stadium, the Polo Grounds, and Chicago Stadium against Jack "Kid" Berg, Sammy Mandell, Sid Terris, Tony Canzoneri, and all-time great Barney Ross.

There is no known video of Kahn fighting. However, in 1932 his nemesis Petrolle fought in Ring Magazine's Fight of the Year before 17,000 spectators. That video is available here, and one can easily imagine southpaw Kahn in the ring and giving Petrolle all that he could handle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPIDk-m5kv4

Kahn had no children but adored and was adored by his niece and nephew. After his passing on December 30, 1962, two of his grand nephews were named after him. In October, 2020, Gd willing, there will be a 99th anniversary celebration of Kahn's first fight and first win, to be held in Israel at the home of one of those namesakes.

Harry Kahn was a lightweight boxing champion of the state of Wisconsin. He was a heavy hitter, with 14 of his 17 wins coming by knockout.

That Kahn took Petrolle to the limit twice demonstrated the strength of Kahn's skill and chin, as over his career Petrolle had 66 KOs. Petrolle fought in Madison Square Garden, Yankee Stadium, the Polo Grounds, and Chicago Stadium against Jack "Kid" Berg, Sammy Mandell, Sid Terris, Tony Canzoneri, and all-time great Barney Ross.

Kahn had no children but adored and was adored by his niece and nephew. After his passing in December, 1962, two of his grand nephews were named after him. In October, 2020, Gd willing, there will be a 100th anniversary celebration of Kahn's first fight and first win, to be held in Israel at the home of one of those namesakes.
