Holman Williams is considered by many to have been the greatest technician that ever lived. Legendary trainer [[Eddie Futch]] cited Williams and [[Charley Burley]] as the two greatest fighters he ever had the privilege to see and was quoted as saying that he would rather watch Williams shadow box than watch most other fighters in action.

Williams was known as a boxer-puncher early in his career, but he become a defensive specialist after his hands were broken several times. He had an excellent jab, deft footwork, and taut defense. "Holman Williams was a great boxer, but he never got the recognition because he wasn't a puncher," Futch said. "He had the finesse of a [[Ray Robinson]], but no punch."

Williams scored victories over notable boxers such as [[Steve Belloise]], [[Eddie Booker]], [[Charley Burley]], [[Cocoa Kid]], [[Lloyd Marshall]], [[Archie Moore]], [[Bob Satterfield]], and [[Kid Tunero]]. In 1946, after nearly 14 years as a pro, he lost back-to-back decisions to [[Marcel Cerdan]] and [[Jake LaMotta]].

Aaron "Little Tiger" Wade was the first African American golden gloves champion in Peoria, Illinois and reportedly had over 600 amateur fights. He turned professional in 1935 and followed older brother [[Bruce Wade]] to California in 1936. Both were known for power, though it was Aaron who was the most successful and the most dangerous. Though he stood a little over 5'5, he fought in three divisions -welterweight, middleweight, and light heavyweight and entered the top-ten after defeating [[Bert Lytell]] in 1945.

Springs Toledo uncovered evidence that Wade took a dive in the last bout of his career against [[Sugar Ray Robinson]]. After his career ended, Wade descended into alcoholism but later overcame it and devoted his life to helping the less fortunate in the Fillmore section of San Francisco as a Christian minister. Wade died of a heart attack in 1985. He was 68 years old.

During his professional career, newspapers claimed that Bert Lytell was born in either Oakland or Fresno, California. However, U.S. Census records show that he was born in Victoria, Texas and that his real name was "Calvin Coolidge Lytle." His birthdate was also believed to be 5/24/1924 (Lytell himself was claiming that date by the late 1940s) but his military records state that he was actually born on 1/24/1924, which is also supported by the U.S Census record. Calvin enlisted in the naval reserves at San Antonio, Texas in March 1942 and was discharged in March 1944 in New York City. He resided in New York City for the bulk of his professional career. Lytell had an older brother named Loyal Lytle. Loyal moved to Oakland, California after his discharge from the army and Lytell was close to his brother and his brother's children. This may be the reason why Lytell claimed California as his home. Lytell lived in Oakland in the early 50s, moved back east, and then returned to Oakland -probably in the late 1960s.

'''Cocoa Kid''' was rated in the top ten by [[The Ring Magazine|''The Ring'']] magazine as a lightweight, welterweight, and middleweight between 1933 and 1947. He was one among a set of feared African American fighters now known as Murderers' Row who engaged in fierce rivalries among themselves while champions looked the other way. Cocoa Kid is noted for his rivalry with Holman Williams, whom he faced thirteen times -- winning eight, losing three, and drawing in two.

Cocoa Kid made the cover of the Oct. 9, 1943 [[The Knockout]] magazine.

He was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico to a Puerto Rican mother of Spanish descent and an African American mariner from Atlanta, Georgia whose name was Lewis Herbert Hardwick. While still an infant, he and his mother were brought to Atlanta. He was orphaned after his father disappeared with the ship USS ''Cyclops'' during WWI. His mother died soon afterward. He was raised by maternal aunt Antonia Arroyo and an African American of West Indian descent named E.W. Robinson. Robinson was his first manager when he began boxing in Atlanta at fourteen years old. In 1932, former Connecticut state senator Harry Durant saw him in West Palm Beach and sponsored his move to New Haven where he began campaigning as Cocoa Kid.

The best evidence indicates that Cocoa Kid's legal name was "Herbert Lewis Hardwick." It has been well-established that he was named for his father. Cocoa Kid was known as "Lew Hardwick" in Atlanta and his grandmother called him "Louie." His uncle told the New Haven Register in February 1932 that his name was "Herbert Louis [Lewis] Hardwick." A New Haven phone directory has him listed as "Louis E. Harwick" in 1933. He went by "Lewis" but would later identify more with his Puerto Rican heritage and Latinize his name from Louis to Luis and use the names Elberto and Humberto at different times. According to the Holyoke Daily Transcript-Telegram (5/24/1933), he was born "Elberto Louis Harwick" [without the "d"] though this has not been confirmed. The name "Arroyo" was his mother's maiden name. He does not seem to use it until the 1940s, despite the fact that the use of duel surnames is a custom in Spanish culture.

'''Eddie Booker''' is another of the often-ignored black fighters that campaigned in the United States during the 1930s and 40s. A slick boxing, defensive stylist with decent power in both hands--particularly his left hook-- Booker beat some of the better fighters of his time.

An accomplished, title-winning amateur around his adopted home town of San Jose, Booker was popular with the fans from the minute he turned professional under the management of local boxing guru [[John Burdick]]. Although his pilot was often criticised for being far too selective when considering opponents for his charge, Booker did his part by defeating most of the men put in front of him.

With a well-developed and muscular physique, Booker had the strength and ability to 'mix-it-up' when the chips were down and was happy to either fight or box; he genuinely loved to be in the ring. Compared by some to heavyweight great [[Jack Johnson]], in regards to his ability to catch a punch and deliver a blow in the same motion with the same hand, Booker was a methodical, conservative workman who used his mind along with his fists.

Booker was unbeaten in his first 44 bouts, then lost back-to-back decisions to [[Fritzie Zivic]] and [[Cocoa Kid]]. He rebounded with a string of knockout victories before taking time out during 1940 due to badly damaged hands.

Victories against some of the better west coast battlers--such as the Hogue twins, [[Bobby Birch]], and Lloyd Marshall--earned Booker a world ranking and a crack at the California State middleweight title, which he lost over 15 close fought rounds to the brilliant Jack Chase. A match with the legendary [[Charley Burley]] never materialised, with Booker confessing to a sparring partner that the Burley was "Just about the best there is out there."

In his last year as a professional fighter--despite rapidly deteriorating eyesight--Booker scored knockouts over [[Paul Hartnek]] (a heavyweight) and [[Archie Moore]]. A points victory over classy [[Holman Williams]] wrapped up a nine-year, 83-fight career for the unheralded and long-forgotten Booker.

Considered a perfect gentleman in and out of the ring, Booker was not only the tragic victim of racism in boxing, but also of the seedier, slimy underbelly of the professional fight game. An incident in the ring involving a doctored pair of gloves led to terrible eye injuries that just would not heal. Booker lived his remaining years blind. Pacquiao came back in the second round and managed to knock Mendones down with a perfect straight left hand. Mendones got up however he was badly dazed and couldn’t fight back, prompting the referee to stop the bout.

'''Rocky Marciano''' was born Rocco Francis Marchegiano on September 1, 1923, in Brockton, Massachusetts. Marciano was [[World Heavyweight Champion]] from 1952 to 1956, and he is the only World Heavyweight Champion to permanently retire undefeated.

Marciano was the first of six children born to Perrino and Pasqualena Marchegiano. Before dropping out of high school to make a few bucks — as a gardener, delivery boy, laborer for the gas company and leather tanner at the shoe factory where his father worked — he starred in football and baseball. In 1947, Marciano had a tryout with the Chicago Cubs as a catcher but was let go because he couldn't make the throw from home plate to second base with accuracy.

Marciano didn't take up boxing until after he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He took up the sport mainly as a way to avoid KP duty (assisting the cooks) and other less desirable activities, but he showed a natural ability and fought as an amateur following his discharge in 1946.

After being discharged, Marciano visited an old Army buddy, Joe Sarelli, in Chicago. Sarelli's father, who was connected to the fight game, agreed to assess Marciano's potential as a fighter. "His father took me to a gym in Chicago's Loop," Marciano recalled. "For three days, I hit the big bag and the little bag. I skipped rope and shadow boxed. At the end of the workouts, Joe's father sat down with me. He told me, 'Rocky, why don't you go home and forget about being a fighter. You'll too small to be a heavyweight. You'll never make it.'"

Marciano, fighting under the name "Rocky Mack" in order to maintain his amateur standing, turned professional on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Lee Epperson|March 17, 1947]], with a third-round knockout of Lee Epperson. Marciano then returned to the amateurs, where he fought under his real name.

On March 1, 1948, at the [[New York Golden Gloves]] Tournament of Champions, Marciano was on the short end of an unpopular [[Split decision|split decision]] to [[Coley Wallace]] in what would be the last loss of his boxing career. In his last amateur fight, Marciano outpointed George McInnis to win the New England [[AAU]] Heavyweight Championship on March 22, 1948. Marciano did not move on to the nationals because of a fractured thumb. He finished his amateur career with a record of either 9-4, with 7 knockouts.

Marciano had been told that a manager based out of New York could do more for him than one in New England, so he went to New York City and met with [[Al Weill]], who had previously managed [[Lou Ambers]], [[Joey Archibald]] and [[Marty Servo]]. Weill telephoned trainer [[Charley Goldman]] and told him to set up a sparring session so they could gauge Marciano’s potential. Later that day, Marciano stepped into the ring at a [[Wikipedia:Catholic Youth Organization|CYO]] gym on 17th Street in Manhattan with a heavyweight named [[Wade Chancey]].

“Al and I often looked over green kids who thought they could become fighters,” Goldman reminisced years later. “I’ll eat my derby hat if I ever saw anyone cruder than Rocky. He was so awkward that we stood there and laughed. He didn’t stand right. He didn’t throw a punch right. He didn’t block right. He didn’t do anything right. Then he hit Chancey with a roundhouse right which nearly put a hole in the guy’s head, and I told Weill that maybe I could do something with him.”

Goldman explained to his assistant, [[Angelo Dundee]], that although Marciano lacked height and finesse, he had great punching power. Dundee said, "Charley taught the technique that if you are short, you make yourself smaller. Charley let him bend his knees to a deep knee squat. He was able to punch from that position, come straight up from the bag and hit a heck of a shot ... It was just bang-bang-bang-bang-BANG and get him outta there."

With Weill as his manager and Goldman as his trainer, Marciano, who changed his name from Marchegiano at Weill's suggestion (he said it was too hard to pronounce), won his second pro fight with a first-round knockout of Harry Bilazarian on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Harry Bilazarian|July 12, 1948]].

Weill became matchmaker for the [[International Boxing Club]] in May 1949. Since many state athletic commissions had a conflict-of-interest rule that precluded a matchmaker from managing a fighter, his stepson, Marty Weill, became Marciano's manager of record. In August 1952, Weill resigned as matchmaker and returned as Marciano's official manager.

Marciano won his first sixteen professional fights by knockout, but there were those who still didn't think much would become of him. [[Goody Petronelli]], trainer of [[Marvin Hagler]], caught one of Marciano's early fights and recalled for ''[[Sports Illustrated]]'', "I never thought he'd make it. He was too old, almost 25. He was too short, he was too light. He had no reach. Rough and tough, but no finesse."

After twenty-five straight wins, Marciano fought [[Roland LaStarza]], who was 37-0, on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Roland LaStarza|March 24, 1950]]. Marciano, a slight underdog, won by a ten-round split decision.

On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Joe Louis|October 26, 1951]], with 37 wins and 32 knockouts under his belt, Marciano faced former World Heavyweight Champion [[Joe Louis]] and knocked him out in the eighth round. Louis was his boyhood idol, and Marciano cried in Louis's dressing room after the fight.

Five fights later, on [[Jersey Joe Walcott vs. Rocky Marciano (1st meeting)|September 23, 1952]], Marciano got a shot at World Heavyweight Champion [[Jersey Joe Walcott]]. In the thirteenth round, behind on points, Marciano knocked Walcott out with a short right to the jaw to win the championship.

Marciano's first title defense was a rematch with Walcott. On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Jersey Joe Walcott (2nd meeting)|May 15, 1953]], he knocked Walcott out in the first round. Marciano's second title defense was another rematch. On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Roland LaStarza (2nd meeting)|September 24, 1953]], he knocked out Roland LaStarza in eleven rounds.

On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Ezzard Charles (1st meeting)|June 17, 1954]], Marciano defeated [[Ezzard Charles]] by a fifteen-round unanimous decision. Afterwards, Marciano said, "It was my toughest fight." Marciano fought Charles again on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Ezzard Charles (2nd meeting)|September 17, 1954]], and almost lost the championship. In the sixth round, Charles cut Marciano's nose so badly that his corner couldn't stop the bleeding. With the ring doctor watching the cut closely and considering stopping the fight, Marciano came on strong in the eighth round and knocked Charles out.

Marciano defended his title against [[Don Cockell]] on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Don Cockell|May 16, 1955]], knocking him out in nine rounds. His sixth and final title defense was against [[Archie Moore]] on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Archie Moore|September 21, 1955]]. Marciano was dropped in the second round, but he came back to knock Moore out in the ninth round.

On April 27, 1956, Marciano retired from boxing at the age of 31. "I am retiring because of my wife and baby,” Marciano said in his retirement statement. "No man can say what he will do in the future, but barring poverty, the ring has seen the last of me. I am comfortably fixed, and I am not afraid of the future."

Friends of Marciano have said his physical condition also played a part in his decision to retire. Marciano had fought with a ruptured disc in his back since August 1949 and had suffered from an arthritic right elbow since 1951.

Many believe the main reason Marciano retired was because of his relationship with manager Al Weill. In April 1956, the chief investigator for the California Governor's special committee investigating boxing accused promoter [[Jimmy Murray]] of shortchanging Marciano and Don Cockell in their title fight and paying $10,000 "on the side" to Weill. Both Murray and Weill denied the allegations. Marciano allegedly said, "I don't care what it cost me, but I will never fight for this guy [Weill] again and let him scalp me."

On August 31, 1969, one day shy of what would have been his forty-sixth birthday, Marciano boarded a small plane with the pilot and one other passenger for a flight from Chicago to a speaking engagement in Des Moines, Iowa. The plane crashed in a field near Newton, Iowa, killing all three men on board.

Marciano was survived by his wife of 19 years, Barbara, and their two children, Mary Anne and Rocco Kevin.

In 2001, the WBA created a new title: Super Champion. Their website states:
:The SUPER WORLD CHAMPION CATEGORY OR UNDISPUTED WORLD CHAMPION was created for those World Champions who hold the title of two or more organizations recognized by the WBA, like the World Boxing Council (WBC), the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO).

However, the WBA also gives Super Champion status to fighters who aren't unified champions. Featherweight champion [[Chris John]] was named Super Champion even though he wasn't a unified champion. The WBA said it was an award for making ten successful title defenses. Welterweight champion [[Antonio Margarito]] was also named Super Champion even though he was not a unified champion and had not made a single title defense.

The three-time world champion at bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight is arguably one of the greatest boxers Australia has ever produced. Inducted into the [[International Boxing Hall of Fame]] in Canastota, New York in June 2002, Fenech is recognised around the world as one of the sport's greats. A controversial draw with African great [[Azumah Nelson]], when the majority of the world saw him win, cost Fenech what would have been an amazing fourth world title at super featherweight.

A career spanning 1984 to 1996, Fenech turned professional after a controversial quarterfinal points loss at the 1984 Los Angeles [[Olympics|Olympic Games]]. Trained by [[Johnny Lewis]], Fenech was known as the "Marrickville Mauler" and was like a pocket dynamo in the ring, capturing the hearts of Australian sporting fans with his unique expression, "I love youse all." The head trainer, manager and promoter now passes on his never ending resources of boxing knowledge to the members of Team Fenech.
