Dynamic hispanic: Fox robbed by Maestre, judge Rizzo mired by racism scandal

This fight was televised by PBC on FOX as the co-featured bout, and Maestre was a sizable favorite heading into the bout. This was inexplicably made for the WBA Interim Welterweight Title during a time when the WBA often had three world titles in each weight class -- a world champion, a secondary champion, and an interim champion, in an effort to enrich their coffers with sanctioning fees.

Prior to the bout, there was a bit of controversy with the way Maestre's gloves were taped, as FOX analyst Joe Goossen talked about how the gloves were "skinned". After a brief delay, the bout was allowed to begin.

From the opening bell, Fox used his height and reach and controlled the bout in most observers' eyes, dropping Maestre in round 2 and more or less dominating the action throughout.

At the end of the fight, not one judge managed to score the fight for Fox. David Singh had it the closest at 114-113, with John Mariano scoring it 115-112, and Gloria Martinez Rizzo inexplicably scoring it 117-110, meaning she awarded 10 rounds to Gabriel Maestre.

The crowd instantly booed the result and the commentators Joe Goossen and Brian Kenny reacted in total disgust. FOX unofficial scorer Marcos Villegas scored the bout 118-109 in favor of Mykal Fox.

Following the bout, boxing's Corey Erdman helped uncover judge Gloria Martinez Rizzo's public Twitter account which had various racist remarks towards black people, including referring to former First Lady Michelle Obama as a monkey, saying LeBron James should return to the stables, and that a Black Lives Matter co-founder shouldn't be jailed, but should be killed. The WBA later suspended Gloria Martinez Rizzo and the WBA made the WBA interim welterweight title vacant as a result. Martinez was later quietly brought back to judge world title fights by the WBA, with WBA president Gilberto Mendoza remarking that he doesn't believe Martinez Rizzo to be a racist despite her public social media comments pointing to the contrary. The Association of Boxing Commissions later recommended the WBA not be recognized if they continue to sanction multiple world titles per weight class, and they began removing the secondary and interim titles, though as of 2025, they've quietly begun to bring those back as well.

The Minnesota Office of Combative Sports didn't overturn the result of the fight and it remains as a loss on Mykal Fox's record. Those that didn't watch the fight that look at his BoxRec would just assume he lost the fight without any controversy, unfortunately.
Video of the full show exists on YouTube and all other weeks of the tournament that took place consecutive Thursdays are reflected as part of those pro records.

The results from this card were not entered until 2024, so it was not known until then that WBC Flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez had in fact been stopped in his pro career as an 18-year-old junior flyweight against Fernando Monroy on this show.

His fight against Joaquin Cruz was initially regarded on BoxRec as his pro debut, but video of that fight shows Martinez's record as 1-1.

Martinez's people began to omit the loss to Fernando Monroy by the time he was fighting on Box Azteca in 2018 and 2018, acting as though he only had the one loss to Joaquin Cruz on his record.

Also notably picking up a loss on this Cinturon de Oro card was Jamin Hernandez Mercado, who before the record was corrected was listed as 16-0-1. An 18-year-old Mercado lost a UD4 to Jorge Luis Santos Guzman in this featherweight bout, and wouldn't campaign seriously as a pro until more than six years later as a super lightweight.

Initially, this fight was ruled a 4th round TKO win for Denis Madriz as referee Edward Collantes ruled that the cut that ended the fight was caused by a punch and not a headbutt.

Video footage provided by Telefutura of this non-televised bout confirmed that it happened due to a headbutt, and after diligent reporting by Queensberry-Rules.com and a follow-up by them to the Calif. State Athletic Commission, a hearing was set to discuss the possiblity of the bout being overturned.

The bout was officially overturned on Aug. 8, 2012, and the full details can be read here: http://queensberry-rules.com/2012-articles/july/questionable-technical-knockout-remains-unchanged.html
