Janiro's boxing skill at close quarters and his surprising stamina brought about 22-year-old Pellone's defeat. Pellone's rushing, hooking attack gave him the advantage at long-range; but his unfortunate habit of falling into clinches with Janiro led to his undoing. Pellone suffered a slightly cut left brow in the 4th and Janiro's nose began to bleed freely in the 8th. There were no knockdowns." -United Press

Refusing to follow the 6-1 underdog script, young Mauriello, in his 7th heavyweight fight, kept blazing away with his long arms at Pastor's chin until he hammered out a 10 round draw in the biggest upset of 1942. Pastor, who was slated tentatively for another title fight with Joe Louis in July, was on the canvas in the 1st round, was spouting blood from a gashed lip in the 2nd, and was staggered again and again during this bitter brawl that brought confusion to the heavyweight division. Mauriello absorbed plenty of punishment too but he absorbed it manfully and was tearing in like a tiger at the final gong. He took a body beating that would have ripped the belly out of an elephant and was well rocked to the head; he suffered a gashed right eyebrow in the 4th and bruised both hands badly. But the only time he was on the floor was in the 2nd heat when he missed a hard right, lost his balance and fell." -United Press

"In a tremendous upset, after a short, murderously bloody brawl, Billy Backus of Canastota last night became welterweight champion of the world. With both fighters streaming blood from cuts beside both eyes, Backus sliced a deep gash above the left eye of champion Jose Napoles, and, when Syracuse referee Jack Milicich judged that Napoles couldn't see from that eye, he stopped the War Memorial fight. The end, a TKO, came after one minute of the 4th round of the scheduled 15 rounder. Napoles was much the superior fighter in the first two rounds, repeatedly beating Backus to the punch. The 3rd round was one of the most exciting three minute sessions ever seen here, as the two stood toe-to-toe and slugged it out, with Backus showing by far the greatest punching power he has demonstrated since he moved into welterweight contention. Both fighters needed after-round repairs to both eyes, but Backus quickly opened a new cut on Napoles' left eyelid, and Milicich, with outside-the-ring approval from Dr. John Sinoatti, stopped the bout as wild jubilation ensued." -Syracuse Post-Standard

*Although the promotion realized app. $46,000 from the gate, Backus, who was to receive 18% of the gate, received nothing as the Syracuse Boxing Club was in the red, having to pay Napoles his guarantee of $62,000. Moreover, Napoles was the only fighter on the card to gain a percentage from the closed circuit TV broadcasts to the west coast and to Mexico, which earned him an additional $30,000.
*The only monies the Canastota Boxing Club saw was from an east coast radio network which earned the club a modest $6,000.

In the 7th, however, Baksi came out a new man, tossing out a lot of leather, which shook Dorazio with a solid left hook to the jaw. Winstone opened in his usual brisk fashion. His precision left leads kept the American at a distance, and it seemed the large crowd was set to witness another Winstone win. The 2nd round, however, told a different story. Jeffery forced Winstone back and with a right to the jaw had the Welshman on the canvas for an 8-count. Winstone then made the mistake of electing to slug it out with the hard-hitting Jeffery. Jeffery piled in punches from all angles and a solid left had Winstone down again. Winstone, bleeding from a cut left eyebrow then staged a brief rally that failed to come off. Jeffery punched away at the sagging British champion and Winstone went down again. Except for the 4th round when Dorazio went down and for bits of action in the 3rd, 9th and 10th rounds, the two fought mostly at close quarters. In the 4th Gus had Thompson backed into a corner. He slipped home a hard left to the body from his crouching position, but as he backed away, he straightened up and Thompson promptly whipped over a hard right to the chin. Gus staggered, then sagged to the canvas. At the count of three he got to one knee and deliberately took the nine-count. That was the only time Thompson put the Philadelphian down. Dorazio came back concentrating on a body attack that slowed Thompson up. When the decision was announced many in the crowd booed." -Associated Press

Ernie Terrell still is a champion but the crown which sits atop his 6-foot-6 frame still doesn't make him the big man in the world of heavyweight boxing. He knows this.

Terrell won a unanimous 15-round decision over George Chuvalo Monday night to remain champion. But he still is only champion of the World Boxing Association, not of the world.

The man recognized by everyone but the WBA as king of the heavyweights—Cassius Clay—puts his share of the title on the line against Floyd Patterson Nov. 22 in Las Vegas.

Terrell was not a picture of jubilation in his dressing room after making the first defense of the title he won by outpointing Eddie Machen in Chicago last March 5.

"Everyone has always made fun of me, mostly because I'm a singer as well as a fighter," said the champion, who also is head of a musical combo. "I don't know why people get this laughing image of me."

His victory over Chuvalo probably won't change Terrell's public image immediately, but it could do so indirectly because it puts him in line for a shot at the winner of the Clay-Patterson fight—a fight which would give boxing a single heavyweight champion again.

The WBA threw the heavyweight division into its present Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde state by stripping Clay of his crown for signing a return bout contract with Sonny Liston before their first fight in 1964.

Terrell, 26, hardly used his right hand at all in defeating the plodding, two-fisted Canadian.

The Chicagoan, who had a seven-inch advantage reach, threw stinging left hand punches to Chuvalo's face almost from the opening bell until the final gong.

Although there were no knockdowns, Terrell, who weighed 206, drew blood from Chuvalo's nose and cut him about both eyes.

The Canadian, who weighed 209, required 10 stitches to close two five-inch cuts over his left eye.

Referee Sammy Luftsprihg scored it 72-65, judge Fred Nobert called it 73-65, and judge Jackie Burke made it 69-65 for Terrell.

The fight was scored under the five-point-must system, in which the winner of a round receives five points and the loser four or less.

The action didn't end with the fight.

Terrell accused Chuvalo of repeated fouling. He pointed to an inch-long gash in his left eyebrow and he said it was caused by butting. He also said Chuvalo kept stepping on his feet.

The referee warned Chuvalo for butting and Terrell for thumbing in the eighth round.

Chuvalo was bitter about the outcome and said he was "willing to go to the Supreme Court (of Canada)" to protest the decision.

"I can expect a bad decision anywhere else, but not in my home town," said the 28-year-old Chuvalo, who spent 45 minutes behind the locked door of his dressing room shouting at his manager, Irving Ungerman, and his trainer, Bernie Glickman.

He blamed Ungerman for agreeing to fight in Toronto, saying the bout should have been elsewhere.

A crowd of 12,500 at Maple Leaf Gardens paid $124,456.50 to see Terrell win his 14th straight fight. His record is 38-4. Chuvalo's record is 33-10-4.

Rojas, who came in at the featherweight limit of 126, scored valuable points against his long-armed opponent with bulling, lunging tactics which saw him break through Higgins' defense on numerous occasions. The new champion sported welts and mouses around both eyes from the middle rounds on and was bleeding heavily from the nose starting in the 12th round. Enrique, 125 1/2, piled up what appeared to be a large lead through the middle rounds, only to lose much of his advantage in the 12th.
