Walker knocked Nova down for a no-count in the 4th round, with a left hook to the body, followed by a short right hand to the head. Nova came back to floor Walker for a no-count with a left-right to the body in the 5th round. Nova was able to keep his left in Walker's face for much of the bout. The ''San Francisco Chronicle'' gave Nova six rounds, Walker two, with two even.

"Lou Nova of Richmond cut short the winning streak of Sonny Boy Walker when he dished out a 10-round boxing lesson to the clouting cowboy in a main event at the Dreamland Auditorium before 5,000 spectators. Mauriello was knocked down for a nine count in the 1st round. Nova seemed to be doing well until he was KO'd in the 6th round, suffering a broken rib and torn cartilage in the bout.

By virtue of this win, Mauriello moved closer to the title of "Interim Heavyweight Champion," as reigning champion [[Joe Louis]] was currently serving in the United States military.

Barlund's left eye was so badly cut referee Arthur Donovan refused to let him continue. The youngster from the west coast handed Barlund a bad beating in every round but the 3rd, when the Finn floored Nova with a short left hook to the mouth. Nova got up and had the 12,633 fans screaming with a two-fisted rally that put Barlund on the defensive. Nova's short rights opened up the cut in the 4th round after some furious milling in mid-ring. It was cruelly mangled by the end of the 6th and, when it started to bleed under the same sort of barrage in the 7th, Donovan walked between them and waved Barlund to his corner." -Associated Press

In the first minute of the 7th round, Spencer hit McMurray a solid right to the midsection and McMurray fell into a clinch. The referee, Pete Morelli, broke them and McMurray accidentally butted Spencer. A minor cut showed on the left side of Spencer's head. In round six Royal's smashing left to his rival's jaw floored Medel for a compulsory eight-count. From the 5th session on Medel bled profusely from a gash over the left eyebrow. The decision was unanimous, referee Jimmy Crowley and the two judges all voting for McLarnin, but at the end of the 5th it was anybody's fight, Jimmy going to his corner with a split across the bridge of his nose. With his most dangerous weapon disabled, McLarnin was forced to resort to ring courage and cunning to stave off the San Francisco negro. Neither fighter was down, but it looked like McLarnin might go down in the 5th under Thompson's furious attack while the Californian himself was weak and weary during the last few seconds of the final round which saw some of the fastest fighting here in years." -United Press

Cokes easily disposed of Houston's Manuel Gonzalez Wednesday night before 5,102 fans to take the championship by a lopsided 15 round decision. With the exception of the 12th round, the fight was largely a case of Cokes pressing and Gonzalez running or punching air. The 12th was the big round of the fight. Gonzalez was jabbing when Cokes slammed a right to the jaw. He followed with a flurry of lefts, a left uppercut, and a right or two that sent Gonzalez sprawling to the ropes and then to the canvas. Referee Pete Giarusso counted to four with Gonzalez on the deck and then held him against the ropes for the eight count. Referee Joey Olmos stopped the match before the 4th round bell sounded and pandemonium, empty whiskey bottles and paper cups promptly showered the ring from the turnaway crowd of more than 10,000. Dr. Jack Useem ordered the battle stopped after examining a deep cut over Moreno's left eye, which had gushed blood from the 1st round on. The Rojas victory ended a 21 straight knockout record by Mexico's 'Little Bird', but the result was far from decisive, and the crowd seemed equally divided in partisanship in the frenzied cheering. The 3rd round was a toe-to-toe alley brawl from start to finish. Moreno's face was covered with blood, while Rojas was unmarked except from the decorative blood he got from Pajarito. The Moreno corner screamed that their man had been butted, but the referee said after the fight that both were guilty of butting." -Associated Press
