But, for most of the remainder of the fight it was a story of Shaw trying fruitlessly to catch up with Pugh. Ramos, who suffered a cut by his left eye in the 1st round, a wound that the champion reopened in the 14th, slashed a bad cut over Cruz's left eye in the 13th. Ramos, who enjoyed a four inch advantage in height and reach, closed in on the champion and had him hanging on and obviously in distress. The 15th was a scorcher. Ramos continued the attack and Cruz was hurt and seemingly tired. But the titleholder gained strength and was throwing punches as rapidly as possible in the final 15 seconds." -Associated Press

"Cecil Hudson, 155, Milwaukee, scored a rousing upset decision over Jake LaMotta, 165, New York's top-ranking middleweight, in a 10 round bout before 6,501 fans at a Damon Runyon cancer fund show in Comiskey Park last night. It was the 3rd fight in eight months for LaMotta, who showed only flashes of his old-time form and was out-boxed from start to finish by Hudson. Despite his 10 pound pull in weight, LaMotta staggered Hudson only twice and was badly tired at the finish. LaMotta, who has been clamoring for a shot at middleweight champion Rocky Graziano, seemed unable to solve Hudson's rapier left leads and his famed body attack had little effect on the fast moving Cecil. LaMotta tried desperately to rally in the closing rounds, but every time he cornered Hudson, Cecil carried the fight right back to his heavier foe. In much better condition than LaMotta, Hudson repeatedly landed 3 or 4 stiff lefts before LaMotta could counter. Trying desperately for a knockout in the final round, LaMotta then found range, but his punches lacked steam and Hudson viciously butted his way out of the ropes. Referee Tommy Gilmore voted for LaMotta 55-45, but the two judges gave the nod to Hudson." -Associated Press

"Elusive Ismael Laguna of Panama won the world lightweight championship Tuesday night when titleholder Mando Ramos could not continue after nine rounds because of eye cuts. The Panamanian's jabbing tactics opened cuts over both eyes of the champion and he bled so profusely his manager Jackie McCoy asked referee Lee Grossman to halt the fight. After an even first round Laguna opened the first cut in the corner of the champion's left eye. Ramos' handlers managed to stem the flow for several rounds and Ramos had an edge through the first five rounds. In the ninth round Laguna's jabs caught Ramos' right eye which also began bleeding and the Panamanian easily piled up points as Ramos had difficulty seeing. It was then McCoy decided to halt the fight." -United Press International

*This bout was originally set to take place in Panama on November 15th of '69, but Ramos was cut in training and the bout was rescheduled for January 10th, 1970, also in Panama. Finally, the bout was rescheduled again due to the political situation taking place in Panama at the time. The bout finally ended up in Los Angeles on March 3rd, 1970.
*Ramos was set to make the record-breaking sum for a lightweight of $150,000 in Panama. And, although Ramos ended up with less in Los Angeles, the purse still broke the record of $93,000 paid to Carlos Ortiz to defend against Laguna in '67.
*Despite agreeing to a clause in the contract that if Laguna won the title, the first title defense would be at the choosing of the Olympic Boxing Club, Laguna's manager, Cain Young refused to comply. Costner, of Camden, N.J., matched right for right and left for left in the furious battle that kept the fans cheering wildly from start to finish. As Gavilan bore in, desperately trying to land his famed bolo for a KO, Costner slammed back giving ground a few times but always coming back with swift uppercuts to the head and chest. The going was furious throughout with a wild flurry of blows starting off the opening round and continuing right through until the closing bell. But always Costner piled up his advantage in the first minute or two, spending the end of the round dodging wicked roundhouses by the ever-dangerous Gavilan. "Ron Lyle kept his pro career alive as he survived a 3rd round knockdown and went on to capture a split decision from Scott LeDoux in a 10 round bout Saturday night. The 37 year old Lyle used his left hook in gaining the decision by the scantest of margins from the 30 year old LeDoux from Anoka, Minn. LeDoux floored Lyle in the 3rd and then followed with a right cross that put the Denver boxer into the ropes again. From then on it was a come-from-behind effort for Lyle and only one point separated the fighters in the judges cards at the end. Middleweight Jake LaMotta of New York punched out a 10-round unanimous decision over Holman Williams of Detroit before a sellout crowd of 16,000 at University of Detroit Stadium tonight. 
Referee Johnny Weber called it a 53-47 fight, while the two judges gave the New Yorker a win by 56-44 and 52-48 margins. 
The decision was booed by many of the spectators, who saw the 35-year-old Williams spot LaMotta a substantial lead in the early rounds and make a game comeback in the latter stages. 
The 25-year-old LaMotta came in at 162 and had a two pound advantage.

The turning point in the point came in the 5th round, when Harrington landed a right hand to the jaw, that appeared to earn the respect of Carter, according to the ''Honolulu Advertiser''. Carter won the first two rounds, according to both the ''Advertiser'' and the ''Honolulu Star-Bulletin''. The ''Star-Bulletin'' did not give Carter a round after the 2nd.

"Stan Harrington, 155, cleanly outpointed Rubin (Hurricane) Carter, 154, in a 10-round fight held at the HIC. What was expected to be a bruising slugfest, turned out instead into a really dull affair. In the first two rounds Carter appeared sharp and well-conditioned. He landed combinations with perfect precision. At this stage the fans were of the opinion that Harrington wouldn't survive the fight. Then suddenly Carter stopped punching and hardly did anything for the next four rounds. It took Harrington, and the fans too, all these rounds to realize that Carter wasn't playing possum. Once Harrington realized this he became the aggressor and did a good job of piling up enough points to gain the nod. The 7,000 fans for the nationally televised fight had visions of an upset when the left-handed Japanese floored Rose with a hard right to the face in the 2nd round. But the champion jumped up immediately and took the mandatory eight-count. Sakurai couldn't land another damaging blow. Rose landed more punches and missed less.
