as a comer and have said many fine things of his ability. Quoting

"Norm Thompson, the most promising of the pugilists on
the roster of the Brockville Boys club, punched his way to a
fifth round T.K.O. over Roger Minault of the Ottawa Beaver
club. Thompson previously fought Minault in Malone, N.Y.,
and before 2,500 screaming fans, beat out a split decision in 5 rounds."

Nineteen year old Norman E. Thompson who hails from
Dauphin is fast making a name for himself in boxing circles in
Eastern Canada.
Young Thompson who was born and educated in Dauphin
has been interested in the glove sport for five years but it was
only sinoe he went east last September that he has taken up
the game seriously.
He has won four straight fights against more
highly rated fighters of his welterweight class. He is a member
of Brockville Boys boxing club and has fought bouts in Montreal,
Ottawa and Cornwall and even over the line in Malone, N.Y.
Thompson is reported to be a very aggressive type of fighter
who goes all out. He is seldom satisfied with a decision but only
content with either a K.O., or when his opponent calls quits.

Mars boxed for sport. He owned a restaurant, bakery, garage, factory, and a sporting newspaper, and was considered wealthy.

Married in Covington, Kentucky Nov. 22, 1914. Approx. 2/17/27 his wife, Kathleen Margolis asked for a divorce. She charged on numerous occasions that he struck and beat her, blackening her eyes. Other times he has told her, the wife charges, that he no longer cared for her and that he encouraged her to obtain a divorce. NY Times 2/17/27

*Berlenbach was born a deaf-mute to French and German parents. One day, when he was 18, while working as an instructor at a Westchester County institution for deaf-mutes, he went to the aid of a boy whose kite had become entangled in an electric wire 12 feet above the ground. Climbing a pole, he released the kite, but came in contact with the wire, received a shock, and fell to the ground. Those who came to his rescue feared him dead. First aid revived him. When he came to, he immediately found that he now had normal hearing. Subsequent treatment developed his speech.

*He became a wrestler and won the Middleweight Gold at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games. He soon tired of grappling and became a boxer, winning 13 knockouts and three decisions as an amateur, earning an amateur boxing championship as well. After his boxing career ended, he went back to wrestling for awhile.

*Retired originally to enter the lumber business.

On April 27, 1927, he married Rosanna O'Reilly, a 24-year-old Los Angeles nurse at the Mexicali City Hall.

*Dec. 12, 1920 NY Times article mentions his birthplace as being County Mayo, Ireland on June 23, 1893.
Brennan managed the Club Tiajuana in Washington Heights, New York. One evening, while having dinner with his sister (singer Shirley Sherman) at the club, a man entered and asked if he could speak with Brennan in private. His sister then heard gunshots and found Brennan mortally wounded (he had been shot in the chest and stomach). "I'm dying," he told her.

His killers were Frankie Rassi (a.k.a. Joseph Pioli) and James Hughes (who went by Terry O'Neill in the ring). Rassi had earlier served prison time for murdering his brother on New Years Eve 1923. Police believed Brennan's murder was due to a quarrel over boot-legging, alcohol being illegal in the United States during this period. He left a wife and three-year-old daughter.

The linked record shows Brennan's verified fights. His published records, such as in T.S. Andrews' World's Sporting Record Book series, Ring Battles of Centuries. etc. list a number of fights for which newspaper accounts have not yet been found. Article from NY paper: "The most impressive fighter on the card was Ed Tiernan, former amateur welterweight champion. Ed stopped Fred Ullman after a furious milling in the third round. Fred had been on the mat four times previously, but referee Tommy Sheridan then saved him by halting activities.

Article from NY paper: "...Ullman went down for a count of nine after a minute's fighting. He arose only to take another count of two when Tiernan showered in a row of terrific wallops. A third time Ullman touched the mat. Tiernan, more vicious than ever, drove all he had into Fred's stomach. Ed landed a few hard wallops to the face as Ullman staggered to his corner. In the second round Tiernan boxed and punched beautifully. Ullman proved to be a fanciful catcher but game to the core. Tiernan landed every blow in the alphabet during the round. In the third round Ullman threw Tiernan down to the mat -- it was not a knockdown. A fast fury took place in which Tiernan sent Fred down for a count of nine. Fred again went down for five but arose. He got up but was through and referee Sheridan assisted him to his corner. The bout ended after 1:29 of the 3rd. TKO win by Tiernan."

Farrell was sent down in the fourth with a right cross, but came right up. It looked like the finish of Marty but Tiernan tired and was finding the going hard at the end of the session. Tiernan outboxed his clever opponent the rest of the way and deserved the decision. Tiernan gives the impression that his hard fighting as an amateur took a lot out of him and he acts like a boy who is fighting under a severe strain."

Ed Tiernan def. Fred Washington (Shanahan C.C.), the Middle Atlantic A.A.U. champ. on a judges decision. From the May 7th ''Brooklyn Eagle'': The 6th annual amateur boxing tournament of the 77th division, given to raise funds for the organization's welfare work was held in MSG last night with 22 of the best amateur boxers from Philadelphia, New Haven and New York in attendance. Ed Tiernan was in particularly good form and easily won the decision from Washington in their special bout. Tiernan has become known as one of the most effective counter-punchers in amateur ranks, but last night he abandoned his usual style and consistently took the lead, rushing Washington about the ring and giving him an artistic trimming. Ed has been in the game for a matter of 5 years or so and the annual rumor that he is going to enter professional ranks is again going around. Under a capable manager, he might have quite a future among the pros.
