[[file:Cotto-margarito-poster.png|180px|right]]
Cotto had taken the early initiative, frequently landing series of punches on Margarito during the early rounds while using his footwork to avoid danger. However, Margarito was relentless in his pursuit of Cotto and eventually began to wear down Cotto's resistance by trapping him against the ropes. Cotto was hurt in the seventh round after a pair of Margarito uppercuts caused his nose to bleed. Margarito continued to chase his opponent down and inflicted further damage towards the end of the tenth round. Margarito then threw a series of punches at the start of the eleventh round, with Cotto against the ropes and bleeding profusely. A combination from Margarito finally forced Cotto to his knee. Cotto got up, but Margarito continued to land punches on Cotto. Cotto's corner threw in the towel after Cotto went down a second time voluntarily.

Kyowa successfully defends his title for the fifth time by eventually wearing down the previously unbeaten Filipino challenger and culminating it by scoring a knockdown in the final round. A very entertaining fight. Check it out on www.youtube.com.

Wilfredo Gomez-Lupe Pintor was held December 3, 1982 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The fight was preceeded by social gatherings and special events leading to it on the days before it took place. Pintor, Gomez, Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard (filling in for Wilfred Benitez), participated at a downtown parade and a press conference (Benitez was in the press conference). At the press conference, as it used to be during that era before virtually every big fight, each boxer wore suits and behaved remarkably well. This was the first and only time that both boxers fought on HBO Boxing.

The fight itself was an undercard fight leading to the main event where Wilfred Benitez would defend his WBC world Jr. Middleweight title against Hearns. Pintor was the WBC world Bantamweight champion, and Gomez was defending his WBC world Super-Bantamweight title for a record seventeenth time, all sixteen previous defenses having been won by knockout.

Gomez dominated the early going, pinning Pintor for a long stretcth along the ropes to begin the third round. Pintor hurt Gomez later on at the same round, but Gomez came back and had Pintor against the ropes again. Round three of Gomez-Pintor was voted "The Ring's round of the year".

Pintor started to zero in on Gomez's face as the fight went on, and Gomez began to tire, losing a point in the middle rounds for hitting with low blows. Gomez, however, was also using a body attack that later on proved to be important.

After round twelve, both fighters kept on throwing punches, with their respective corners having to intervene. Gomez had various injuries around his face, and, at some point, it was believed that Pintor could repeat the achievement done by Salvador Sanchez and beat Gomez. Pintor was very tired towards the fight's end, however.

Gomez broke through in round fourteen, connecting with a right to the head that sent Pintor down. Pintor gallantly got up, but after another barrage of punches punctuated by a devestating left hook from Gomez, he fell down against the ropes, prompting referee Arthur Mercante to stop the fight.

Many boxing experts call this one the greatest fight in Super Bantamweight boxing history.

== Bout Summary ==
Witter controlled the early goings of the fight, but Harris controlled the action in the third, a round where Witter wasted too much time switching back and forth between orthodox and southpaw. It seemed to be more of the same in the fourth round, until Witter connected on a good right hand. Witter attempted to follow up, but was in too close, causing an anticipated knockdown to be ruled a slip as Witter pushed with the right. Harris got up, but Witter knocked him down with a good left hook. In round seven a left hand from Harris sent Witter into the corner. Harris tried to finish him off, but was unable to launch his right hand, as he got nailed with a perfect counter left hook. Harris crumbled to the canvas, and was peeking out through the bottom ropes as the referee reached the count of ten.

In an entertaining slugfest, Miranda was down twice in the sixth and was stopped with a barrage of blows in the seventh. Pavlik came out early with a strict gameplan of putting Miranda on his heels and backing him up. Pavlik continually landed short, vicious power punches as compared to Miranda's wild looping punches. As the fight wore on, it became increasingly one-sided and Miranda started to feel the effects of the power punches in the sixth. Pavlik landed a vicious right hand followed by two or three more power punches in the sixth and Miranda went down. He got up on very unsteady legs, and spat out his mouthpiece. The referee asked his cornerman to put the mouthpiece back in his mouth and then the fight continued. Miranda took quite a few more power punches before being dropped again. He got up again on unsteady legs and was saved by the bell. When Miranda came out for the seventh round, it was clear that he was finished as he took another barrage of punches from Pavlik before referee Steve Smoger jumped into stop the carnage.

In a sensational slugfest with plenty of back and forth action, Koichi Wajima was knocked down three times in the final round for a monsterous climax in front of 10,000 Japanese fans. After losing the first 3 rounds with his counterpunch tactics, Wajima took the fight to his challenger and stood toe to toe. Albarado was used to this style of fighting, and both turned it into a wicked slugfest. Rounds 7 through 10 saw Albarado and Wajima stand toe-to-toe and trade bombs, but Albarado's left hook to the body sapped the energy out of his challenger, and Wajima began to fade. In round 11, a point was taken from Albarado for landing numerous punches on the belt line or below the belt line by referee Yusaku Yoshida. Wajima "rallied" in the fourteenth pinning Albarado to the ropes and firing away with a non-stop barrage in a final, desperate attempt to retain the title. But Wajima exhausted himself in that attempt, and was dropped three times in the final round to end the stirring brawl.

Barrera and Marquez put on a good show, but the judges' score's were very questionable. In other words, Barrera was robbed. Marquez hurt Barrera with a hard right hand in round seven, but Marquez was dropped shortly after from a picture-perfect right-hand-for-a-right-hand and Barrera hit him again while Marquez was on his hands because the referee failed to jump in immediately. The knockdown was not called and Barrera was penalized a point for hitting marquez while he was down. Marquez was not as aggressive as he was in the early going from that point on and Barrera continuously beat marquez to the punch, and was out-landing him. Emmanuel Steward commented on the judges' scoring saying it was very confusing how Barrera has given that city so many great fights, and the judges' turned around and robbed him like that.

This was one of the most anticpated bouts in boxing at the time. Many people were expecting it to be the "fight of the year" before it even happened. Chavez was an undefeated rising star, who had the longest reigning title streak of an undefeated boxer in over 78 years. Meldrick Taylor was a young and fast fighter, also undefeated at the time.
[[file:Chavez.taylor.program.jpg|right|Official program]]
Chavez and Taylor engaged in a high-paced action fight. Taylor had built a huge lead and was winning the fight easily going into the last round, although Chavez landed the more crushing blows that led to a fracture in Taylors orbital bone. With 28 seconds left on the clock, Chavez badly staggers Taylor with a crushing right hand. Taylor moves towards Chavez and takes a sickening left hook to the body and a left uppercut. Taylor mauled Chavez into the ropes, and Chavez steppped to the side and landed a vicious left uppercut followed by a crushing right hand that sent Taylor down. Taylor got up at the count of five and seemed to some observers be okay, even though he didn't respond when referee Richard Steele asked him if he was okay. Referee Steele waved off the fight with less then two seconds to go.

This fight is one of the most controversial boxing matches in history. Many fans thought that Steele should not have stopped the fight, as there was not enough time for Chavez to do any furthur damage; while other fans argued Taylor deserved to be stopped, because how time is left in a fight is irrelevant.

Steele was interviewed by HBO television commentator Larry Merchant after the fight and asked why he stopped it. Steele said he didn't know how much time was left in the fight and that he was doing his job--protecting a hurt fighter.

Despite demand for an immediate rematch, Taylor felt making the 140 pound limit weakened him, and decided to move up in weight. Chavez didn't want to leave his weight division at junior weltererweight, where he felt comofortable. Thus. the rematch didnt occur until four and a half years later.
