This was Mercado's second time fighing Nieves. Nieves has no previous boxing experience at all. He has no amateur back ground and was in the gym for only a week before accepting his first fight against Mercado. In there second match, Nieves won the first round on all three judges cards despite his novice style, but due to his extreme lack of experience was stopped in the second round. Mercado spit his mouthpiece out and jumped on the ropes to celebrate his victory over the extremely inexperienced Nieves.

The one sided beating resulted in Mercado immediatley running out of the ring in tears following the announcement of the judges decision. Mercado was completely outclassed and overmatched by Garcia who had no experience.
