*As part of its promotional plan, Sun City put up $2.5 million and erected a temporary 18,000-seat arena. Weaver was paid $2.2 million plus 40% of the TV money negotiated by promoter Bob Arum. As the #1 ranked challenger, Coetzee was paid $150,000.
*Coetzee won several rounds early in the fight. Weaver was partially blinded by the liniment that had been rubbed onto Coetzee's chest and shoulders. Between rounds, Weaver's corner worked frantically to cleanse the champion's eyes. In the 8th round, Coetzee hurt Weaver with a right and kept him pinned to the ropes for most of the round. Weaver withstood Coetzee's punches and wore the challenger down. Weaver dropped Coetzee with a right in the 13th round. Coetzee got up, but it was too late: He had failed to beat the referee's count.

Matthysse was twice warned in the opening round for pushing down on the back of Soto's head. Soto worked well from a distance with the jab and straight right hands. He closed the round with sound combination punching. Soto started Round 2 well with a higher work rate, before Matthysse came on in the final minute landing a pair of right hands. A right hand at the bell, sent an off-balance Soto down from what was correctly ruled a trip. Matthysse connected with some crisp right hands in Round 3. Soto retaliated with quick combination punching highlighted by left hooks. The two continued to trade in a back-and-forth Round 4. Matthysse continued to land the heavier shots in Round 5 both upstairs and to the body. A three-punch combination sent Soto stumbling back into the ropes. A followup right hand sent Soto down for the first time in his career in the final seconds of the round. Soto made it to his feet at the count of seven and held the top rope to keep his balance. He was allowed to continue and immediately went to his corner with the round having ended. The fight was stopped at the request of Soto's corner as he was badly dazed and would not respond to his corner.

Bout Summary
The first half was slow with each man feeling out the other. The pace stepped up in the second half of the round with Ortiz throwing combinations. Lopez landed a pair of nice left hooks in the round including one in the final seconds that stung Ortiz. Ortiz hurt Lopez midway through Round 2 and appeared to have him in some danger, before Lopez retaliated with power punches of his own. Each man had his moments in a close Round 3. Ortiz likely took Round 4 with aggression and by beating Lopez to the punch. Lopez threw more in the last minute of the round, but landed infrequently. Action was paused in Round 5 when Ortiz hit Lopez in the back of the head while pressing down on him. Lopez went to the mat and was allowed a few minutes to recover as the referee called the ringside physician up to view Lopez. By the end of Round 6, Lopez had developed some swelling to his left eye. An active Round 7 saw the two trade power shots. Lopez landed a pair of clean uppercuts that snapped back Ortiz's head, before Ortiz pressed him against the ropes and threw. Lopez motioned for Ortiz to "bring it on" and the two traded with Lopez appearing to hurt Ortiz in the final seconds. In Round 9, Lopez closed again with some power hooks. Following the round, the fight was surprisingly stopped as Ortiz stood up and tried to push past his cornerman to inform the referee that his jaw was broken. The referee asked Ortiz is he was wanting the fight stopped and he replied, "Yes, because my jaw is broken."

Twenty-four-year-old Andrzej Fonfara and forty-three-year-old Glen Johnson each looked his age and the Polish-born Chicagoan Fonfara scored the biggest win of his professional career to date in front of his hometown crowd by outpointing the former-world champion in the main event of the nationally-televised ESPN Friday Night Fights.

Johnson, who announced his retirement following the loss, had some success early landing with power shots and jabs when in range, but Fonfara had too much stamina and too much speed and worked over a fading Johnson for the final four rounds. Fonfara connected well from a distance with jabs, followed by right hands and only allowed Johnson a chance when he chose to fight in close.

Johnson had his strongest round in the second when he caught Fonfara with a few heavy shots to the head. Fonfara swung the momentum in the third and wobbled Johnson with a looping right hand.

By the seventh, Johnson was breathing heavily and badly faded from the eighth round on. He lumbered forward, remained covered, and occasionally threw a jab or one-two combination as Fonfara moved in and out with jabs and right hands.

The victory pushed Fonfara's win-streak to twelve following his 2008 knockout loss to Derrick Findley (11-2). It was Johnson's third consecutive loss and fifth in his last seven fights.

Notes
*Andrzej Fonfara 21-2 (12 KOs) vs. Glen Johnson 51-16-2 (35 KOs)
*Johnson was ranked as the #7 super middleweight contender according to The Ring Magazine. Fonfara was unranked by the same publication, but was ranked as the #9 light heavyweight contender by the WBO.
*Johnson entered with a record of 2-4 in his previous six bouts, with three losses in world title matches.
*At age 43, Johnson was nineteen years older that Fonfara.
*Ticket prices for the event ranged from $31 to $151.
*It was the first time Fonfara had been beyond seven rounds.
*ESPN's Teddy Atlas scored the bout 97-93 in favor of Fonfara.
*Glen Johnson announced his retirement in a post-fight interview with Atlas and Joe Tessitore.

Quotes
*"If I can’t beat someone like this, who hasn’t fought anyone of my caliber of competition, then there is no reason to keep doing it anymore. But I don’t see myself losing this type of fight. I respect that he is a strong fighter but I am not going to let him build his name off of me." - Glen Johnson
*"I’m still a relatively young 24-year-old in this business but I don’t have time and patience to fight nobodys. This is why I had no problem with accepting Glen’s challenge. What’s the point of fighting if you don’t believe in your skills? We all know that the Johnson fight could be decided depending on how good my jab will be, how strong and powerful my right hand has to be. We will fight on July 13, nobody punched anybody yet, there are no scorecards filled up. Like the old saying in boxing – this is why we have the fights – to find out who is better." - Andrzej Fonfara
*"I believe I went out there and gave one hundred percent. One hundred percent wasn't good enough. It wasn't one of those nights where I feel like I'm off. Sometimes you go out there as an athlete and you perform and you're trying hard but there's somethings that aren't there. That's not the situation tonight. I felt good. I was doing what I wanted to do. I saw some tings I wanted to do and i just couldn't get there to do them. So I feel like the end of the road is here. Father time is undefeated. He'll always catch up with you no matter what your efforts are or what your mindsets might be. I really cant's see no reason to move forward, because if I can't win a fight like this, then I'm not going to achieve my ultimate goal which is being a world champion. So, if I can't be a world champion, then what's the use. You guys are great. I was watching last week when I got the ultimate compliment by Eddie (Teddy). Eddie, thank you so much you don't know how much you meant to me throughout my career. You make me feel good. There's a lot of things people can say about you in the ring, but when people talk about the man you are outside the ring, it means everything to me. I don't care about the fighting part of it, but being a man and a person in society means everything to me. You recognized that and you don't know how much you cut my heart. I appreciate that. Thank you so much. To the boxing fans, thank you so much for all you have given to me, all the support throughout the years and ups and downs. I gave you a hundred percent of what I got. I hope it was good enough for you to enjoy." - Glenn Johnson in the post-fight interview with Teddy Atlas and Joe Tessitore.

Despite losing his interim title on the scales, Javier Fortuna maintained his unbeaten record in emphatic and somewhat-worrisome fashion by scoring a brutal first-round knockout of Mexican Miguel Zamudio in the main event of a card in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Fortuna came out swinging from the opening bell and floored Zamudio with a left hand for a count of four. Seconds later, Fortuna connected with a massive counter left hand that knocked Zamudio out immediately and sent him crashing to the mat, striking his head hard on the canvas. Without beginning a count, veteran referee Eddie Cotton waved an end to the bout.

Zamudio, who made little, if any, movement in the ring, was administered oxygen and taken by stretcher to the hospital.
*Fortuna was stripped of his interim WBA World Featherweight Title the day before the bout for failing to make weight. Thus, the interim title was only at stake for Zamudio. The fight was agreed upon to continue with Fortuna giving $1,000 of his purse to Zamudio.

Danny Garcia floored Zab Judah in the eighth round and held on late to retain his WBA and WBC light welterweight titles and push his unbeaten streak to 26 fights.

The challenger was in a bit of trouble in the fifth round when a straight right hand from Garcia caused Judah's legs to buckle. Judah was staggered again just a minute into the sixth, but was able to gather himself enough to keep his feet.

The lone knockdown came in Round 8 when a counter right hand from Garcia slipped through Judah's guard and put him on his backside for a three count. The punch also opened a big gash under Judah's left eye.

Judah came on strong, however, over the last three rounds and hurt Garcia with a left hand in the tenth. In the eleventh, following a break to retie Judah's shoe, the two men traded power punches, highlighted by a right hook from the challenger. A clash of heads in the final seconds opened a small cut on Garcia's hairline.

Another bad clash in round twelve opened a cut above Judah's left eye and an inch-long, vertical cut in the center of Garcia's forehead that bled down over his face.

With the win, Garcia was expected to meet the winner of Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse which was scheduled for May 18th.
*Jesus Soto Karass 27-8-3 (17 KOs) vs. Andre Berto 28-2 (22 KOs)
*Berto entered with a record of 1-2 in his previous three bouts with decision losses to Victor Ortiz (28-2-2) and Robert Guerrero (30-1-1).
*Karass, a 3.25-to-1 betting underdog, entered with a record of 3-5 in his previous eight bouts dating back to November of 2009. He was coming of a majority decision win over Selcuk Aydin (23-1) six months prior.
*Prior to the bout, a memorial 10-count was held for Hall-of-Famer Emile Griffith, who died four days prior.
*Berto, who was hurt and on the defensive in the fourth, seemed to be bothered by his right shoulder from the fifth round on. It was checked out by the ringside physician following the round.
*Karass went down in Round 11 from an uppercut that landed to the beltline. He was up quickly and his corner complained that the punch was low.
*A short left hook sent Berto down in the 12th round. He got to his feet at the count of four, but the referee waved an end to the bout.

* Dennis Andries 34-7-2 (21 KOs) vs. Jeff Harding 14-0 (11 KOs)
* Harding, who was eleven years younger than Andries, was a late substitution for Donny Lalonde.
* Among those in attendance was the then-Heavyweight Champion of the World Mike Tyson, World Champion Jeff Fenech and MLB Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and Maury Wills.
* At the time of the stoppage, Andries was ahead on all three judges' cards.
* It was Harding's first bout to go beyond ten rounds.
* With the win, Harding became the first Australian light heavyweight to win a world title.
Bout Summary
A big underdog, Harding took everything Andries could dish out in the early going including numerous power shots to the head, but continued to work and come forward. In the opening round, Andries opened a cut in the corner of Harding's left eye and by the 3rd, Harding was bleeding from the nose. By the 5th Round, the bleeding had stopped from Harding's eye but there remained significant swelling. In Round 5, a contentious knockdown was ruled as Harding went to the mat from a grazing punch that could have been ruled a push. It was the first time Harding had been down as a professional. Harding began to come on in the second half of the fight landing thudding shots to the body. Harding was warned in Round 6 for pushing Andries with a forearm and had begun to bleed from the mouth by the end of the round. Andries received a warning in Round 7 to avoid leading with his head. Also in the 7th, the cut reopened to Harding's left eye and was a bit more broad than before. The 11th Round, one for the ages, saw Harding begin to bleed much more heavily from the nose as Andries landed the power shots early. Harding, however, poured it on in the second half hurting the champion and forcing him back into the ropes. The first punch from Jeff Harding in Round 12, sent a stiff-legged Andries stumbling back into the corner. To his credit, he was able to gather himself and fire back, but a right hand seconds later sent Andries to the mat for the first time in the bout. He was up at the count of four and was allowed to continue as Harding, who was across the ring, stood with blood covering his face from a new and large cut above his right eye. A follow-up barrage sent Andries crashing with arms outstretched into the top turnbuckle and down again. He was up at by the count of seven and again continued. With this, Harding came in and threw rapidly to both the body and head causing Andries to fall back into the ropes and cover up. At that, Joe Cortez stepped in and waved an end to the bout. Despite being covered in blood due to bad cuts around his right eye, and despite having taken some wicked shots from the champion, Jeff gutted it out and scored a TKO win over the rapidly tiring Andries in the twelfth. * "I think he's (Andries) just slightly ahead, but what amazes me with Harding, being that much taller, is that he's coming in very close to Andries and throwing some tremendous body shots. For the public watching it they don't look like they are devastating punches but they're hurting him and for a man of that age it must be weakening." - Alan Minter commentating following the 6th Round.

Gomez would make it to his feet, but was dropped hard by a big right hand from Nelson. Gomez's legs folded from underneath him as he fell. Gomez struggled to make it off the canvas, but was counted out. Gomez would be up after a brief period.

Both fighters came out and traded bombs in a tremendous first round. Taylor dropped Pavlik in the second round with a hard right hand followed by a left hooks and a right hand when Pavlik dropped his hands. Pavlik was on unsteady legs briefly after that, but he still pursued the champion. The rounds that preceeded showed brutal exchanges with Pavlik beginning to get to the champion. Pavlik hurt Taylor in round seven with a hard right hand that staggered Taylor into a corner. Pavlik then followed up with a left uppercut, then a right uppercut and finished it with a left hook and a grazing right hand. Taylor fell down hard, slumped in a corner. Referee Steve Smoger jumped in almost immediately after Taylor was dropped, and stopped the fight.

Jimmy Wilde, whose heart weighs about as much as him, decided to battle determined Filipino whirlwind Pancho villa amid more than two years of inactivity. Layoffs had been relatively new to Wilde who previously (previously as in before his professional fighting career) battled in boxing booths 25 times a day against men weighing as much as 170 pounds. Also, in Wilde's most recent bout he showed a tremendous heart in taking a horrible beating to one of the greatest "bantamweights" of all time, Pete Herman. Basically, Wilde was somewhat in over his head in taking the bout. The fight was to take place in The Polo Grounds in New York. This was one of the first times Wilde fought on American soil as well. When the bout started, Wilde understood the consequences of agressively approaching the younger, quicker, and stronger Villa and "The Mighty Atom" dominated on long range. Wilde continued in the second until a vicious right hand after the bell (according to most sources who observed the bout) flattened him. The not-so-mighty "Atom" was badly dazed and fought purely on courage. The pounding continued until an exhausted and battered Wilde fell flat on his face in the seventh round off of a serious of punches. Wilde was counted out and had to be carried back to his corner for the last time in his legendary career. -- Source: Cyber Boxing Zone
* Carpentier scored two knockdowns in round three with right crosses to the head. Siki came back scoring a four punch combinatrion to the body and head for a knockdown. Carpentier told his corner he had broken his right knuckles. Siki then took over, scoring many body blows, while Carpentier fell into butting and fouling. The French crowd booed their own. With Carpentier boring in head first, Siki scored the KO in round six, with a right to the ribs. The referee tried to throw the bout by claiming Siki had fouled by tripping. Three judges upheld the KO.(Based on the fight film.)
The Pittsburgh Post said that it was a close fight. Loughran won the first two rounds, waging a body attack. Greb dominated the next five rounds. Loughran won the last three rounds. Loughran landed the cleaner blows. It was a good fight.

However, the Boston Globe said that the majority thought that Greb won handily although Loughran got the decision, but he was guilty of rough tactics and Tommy landed the clearner blows.
The Boston Herald felt that Loughran registered the cleaner blows in every round, while noting that it was a rough bout. The Boston Herald felt that Loughran won the last two rounds by a wide margin.
Walker floored Rosenbloom for a no-count knockdown in the 1st round on a right hand to the jaw. Walker would appear to take the first five rounds, as his punching from all angles gave him the edge. * Red Smith reported: "In spite of his injury and in spite of a severe beating in the first round ... Cerdan won the second round big and the third and fifth by lesser margins. A master at handling his opponent, turning him, tying him up, slipping or blocking his punches, and setting him up, Cerdan could do none of this one-handed. He couldn't even stick his left out to ward off his foe ... it is difficult to believe LaMotta would have a chance with a two-handed Cerdan."
* After the fight, LaMotta had a sizeable swelling on top of his left hand, around the middle finger. He said, "I don't know which round I hurt the left ... maybe the third or fourth ... I think it is a fracture." Despite the injured hand, LaMotta landed 104 blows in the ninth round, whereas Cerdan scarcely threw a punch.
* Cerdan's corner stopped the fight after the ninth round.
*Cerdan was killed in a plane crash in the Azores on October 27, 1949. He was on his way back to the United States to train for the rematch.
*LaMotta testified before a Senate subcommittee in 1960 that he agreed to throw his 1947 fight against Billy Fox and pay the mob $20,000 in order to get a shot at the middleweight title.
"Old age and Carlos Ortiz finally caught up with lightweight champion Joe Brown Saturday night as the young New Yorker wrested the world crown from the 35 year old veteran of 115 ring engagements. A crowd of more than 7,000 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, and a national television audience looked on with astonishment as the 25 year old bull from the Bronx completely outclassed the Old Bones of fighting. Ortiz did just what he had promised before the fight. He stayed on top of Brown all the way, seldom letting the hard hitting champion get set to throw a lethal punch with either hand. Ortiz, scoring consistently with a popping left jab as his main weapon, slit open Brown's eye in the 1st round. It bled throughout the evening, and while it may not have hurt the old fellow, it didn't do him any good." -Associated Press
The decision sparked a major riot. Fires were set, debris thrown into the ring, and cars overturned in the parking lot. Rose was knocked down in the 10th round.

"Australian Lionel Rose built up an early lead and survived a 10th round knockdown Friday night to successfully defend his world bantamweight title with a split decision over Mexico's Chucho Castillo in 15 rounds. Making his second defense of the title he won from Fighting Harada last February, Rose used a counter-punching style while Castillo appeared the aggressor most of the way. In the 10th, Rose went down from a solid right to the jaw and a left to the body. He was up after a short count but had to take the mandatory eight. Castillo came out fast in the 11th but by that time Rose was fully recovered. The little champion from Down Under probably kept his crown with a rally in the 14th. Castillo was unmarked. Rose suffered a bruise under his left eye in the 4th and blood trickled but gave Rose no trouble in his second defense. When the result was announced, the big crowd with a huge contingent of Castillo's countrmen vented their rage. Rose's manager Jack Rennie suffered cuts on his leg and arm, Referee Dick Young had scalp lacerations and several policeman were cut by the flying glass. Although double the normal number of police were on duty, they were unable to maintain order as a score of fires were set in the seats." - Associated Press

*The next bout on the card between Richie Sue and Jose Jimenez was aborted in the 3rd round after bottles continued to bombard the ring. The rest of the card was then scrapped.
*Purses: Rose - $75,000, Castillo - $20,000
*Unofficial scorecards: Associated Press - 8-5 Castillo, Pasadena Star-News - 7-6 Rose

Bernard Hopkins successfully defended his IBF Middleweight Title against undefeated Glen Johnson by scoring a stoppage in the 11th round.

Hopkins hurt Johnson midway through the second round and again in the fifth, when he picked apart the challenger with uppercuts. In the second half of the fight, Hopkins outworked Johnson and landed crisply, at times, battering his opponent with shots to the head against a defensive Johnson, who was bleeding from the mouth and had developed significant swelling to his right eye.

In the eleventh, Hopkins connected early with body shots and closed with a flurry of punches to the head that caused the referee to step in and wave an end to the bout.
Notes
*Bernard Hopkins 31-2-1 (23 KOs) vs. Glen Johnson 32-0 (22 KOs)
*It was the only knockout loss of Johnson's 19-year professional career.
*Neither man was knocked down in the bout.
*"The toughest fight I have had was against Bernard Hopkins at middleweight. When I fought him, I didn't have the experience that I have now to deal with that level of fighting. I can say that I was taken to school by Hopkins and he was the only person to ever have a run away win against me in my career. That was my toughest fight so far." - Glen Johnson in a 2009 interview with Doghouse Boxing
