Vasyl Lomachenko is a Ukrainian former amateur boxer who won the Featherweight Olympic Gold medal and was awarded the prestigious Val Barker Trophy for the most "Outstanding Boxer" at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Also in 2008, Lomachenko won the gold medal at the European Amateur Championships.

Lomachenko went on to win the gold medal at the 2009 World Amateur Championships, where he conceded only seven points in the whole tournament despite breaking his hand in the tournament.

In 2011, Lomachenko moved up to the lightweight division where he captured the gold medal at the World Amateur Championships. In 2012, he won the Olympic Gold medal at the Olympic Games in London, England.

He finished his amateur career with a claimed career record of 396-1, with his only loss avenged twice.

Former Olympic gold medalist Istvan Kovacs said of Lomachenko: “Thank God there was no Lomachenko in my division at the time, I never saw a fighter like him before.”

After winning the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics, Lomachenko entered the World Series of Boxing 2012/2013 as a lightweight representing the “Ukraine Otamans”, where he amassed a record of 6-0 in 5-round bouts, scoring knockdowns on most of his opponents.

In August 2013, Lomachenko turned professional after signing for Top Rank.
*"I was trying to control myself in the first rounds, to control my boxing rather than just fighting. We need to put goals in front of us and move towards them," Oleksandr Usyk said.
*"I tried to go for it because I thought I was behind. He's a brilliant fighter, he's hard to pin down. I fought the very, very best, and he's just better than me. Usyk is pound-for-pound material, the best I've ever fought. Anyone who fights him is in trouble. That's definitely the end [of my career]," Tony Bellew said.
*"With [Matchroom Sport promoter] Eddie Hearn we can do great things in boxing. Usyk definitely needs to fight Anthony Joshua," said Alexander Krassyuk, of K2 Promotions, which co-promotes Usyk with Matchroom Sport.

* Battle for the BoxRec number one 160 pound worldwide ranking - Gennady Golovkin defending his titular belts against Saul 'Canelo' Álvarez
* 160 pound weight limit established - mandatory unless a catch weight is mutually agreed upon before the bout by the titular sanctioning bodies
* Álvarez did not pay WBC nor IBO sanction fee. If he had won, both titles would have become vacant.
* WBC offered a special "Huichol" crafted commemorative belt to the winner, which Álvarez probably would not have accepted.
* WBA offered a special version of their Super belt, with the names of both fighters engraved on gold plates.

After Canelo defeated Julio Cesar Chavez by 12 round decision in the televised HBO main event on Saturday May 7, 2017, Gennady Golovkin (alias 'GGG'), who was present at ringside for the T-Mobile Arena at Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, entered the ring after the unanimous decision was announced for Canelo. GGG announced that the long-awaited bout between himself and Alvarez would take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 16, 2017. Canelo then stated: "Since I was 16 years old, I have fought everyone. When I was born, fear was gone. Little by little, I am growing (as a fighter). The rival (GGG bout) will give me the tools (opportunity) to showcase myself." GGG responded, saying: "It was a very nice performance. Congratulations. He (Canelo) looks good. Right now looks good." When asked if Canelo was the biggest challenge of his career, GGG replied: "Yes, he is, of course." Canelo then had this to say: "That's what we will expect come September. I've had difficult fights, tough fights, and that (GGG) no doubt is going to be a tough fight. I always say Canelo is the best because I fought the best." GGG followed up by telling Canelo: "Good luck in September!" Canelo then decided to fire back instead and said that "Luck is for mediocre people." Neutral HBO commentator Max Kellerman sounded off afterwards, stating: "Christmas is coming early, folks."
*In the 5th round, Golovkin landed a very hard right hand to Canelo, while Canelo shook his head to show he was not hurt and fought back.
*Golovkin continued to keep applying pressure. Canelo was a little bit tired in rounds 6-8, but he came back strongly in the last few rounds.
*Golovkin landed more jabs but not very impressively, while both fighters landed good power punches.
*Golovkin: "My focus is on the belts and I'm still the champion."
*Canelo: "I think I won 7-8 rounds. I felt that I won the fight."
*International Boxing Organization Middleweight Title (16th defense by Golovkin)

*Canelo outboxed Golovkin in the first three rounds, which was mentioned in HBO commentator Max Kellerman's post fight interview.
*By round 4, Canelo started to show signs of fatigue while Golovkin started to find more success with his power shots.
*The fight marks the 19th successful defense for Golovkin in world title fights(4 defenses When Felix Sturm was WBA super champion).
*Golovkin: "My focus is on the belts and I'm still the champion."
*Canelo: "I think I won 7-8 rounds. I felt that I won the fight."
