In the opening round, Martinez circled Macklin, who largely stayed in the center of the ring, and moved in quickly and threw. Macklin was a bit more restrained than in his previous bouts early and he sought to solve Martinez's movement. Martinez looked to keep Macklin out of range, move in quickly while landing and get back out of range. A left hand caught Macklin coming forward midway through Round 2 and, although it did not appear to hurt him, sent him stumbling back into the ropes. Macklin had an improved 3rd Round landing with a few straight right hands to the body, as neither man landed with great effect. The chess match continued in Round 4 as both fighters evaded the greatest punishment from their opponent. A left hand at 1:30 caught Macklin as the two were tangled and made it appear his glove might touch, although it likely would have been ruled a slip. Macklin appeared to be gaining confidence in the 5th Round; a round he likely won by putting punches together. The two exchanged power shots as the round closed. Martinez had a stronger Round 6 landing with several decent counter shots. A knockdown was ruled in Round 7 as in blocking a punch Martinez stumbled over the legs of Macklin causing his glove to touch the mat. Martinez appeared to be spurred by the knockdown and looked to take it to Macklin to close the round. Martinez had perhaps his strongest round in the 8th as he turned up his aggression and caught Macklin with several good shots. The champion began to distance himself from his opponent in Round 9. He moved in and out and landed well against Macklin who was a step slow. Martinez took Round 10 catching Macklin with single counter shots. Macklin was spun around and stumbled into the ropes as the round ended. At 2:42 of Round 11, a straight left caught Macklin coming forward and sent him stumbling back and down. He made it to his feet at the count of six and was allowed to continue, as he bled from a cut the opened outside his right and left eyebrows. Martinez came forward and landed another straight left hand that put Macklin down on his side. He again got to his feet at the count of six as the round ended. Following the round and with Macklin on the stool, trainer [[James (Buddy) McGirt]] waved for the referee [[Eddie Cotton (Referee)|Eddie Cotton]] to call an end to the bout, which he did.

In a highly-anticipated match up, former Golden Gloves champion Allan Green knocked out Jaidon Codrington shortly after the opening bell, on 'ShoBox: The New Generation.' The fight was called off 18 seconds into the first round as Codrington, unconscious, fell through the ropes. Codrington remained out on the canvas for roughly three minutes before regaining consciousness, and was taken to Integris Baptist Regional Health Center in Miami, where initial reports indicated that he had suffered a fractured six vertebrae. Doctors later retracted that diagnosis, according to promoter Lou Dibella. Codrington was released after neurological tests and CAT scans of the vertebrae came back negative.

Briggs, with 30 first round knockouts among his 45 knockouts, tried to get inside on Klitschko in center ring. Briggs tried to counter punch Klitschko in center ring. Other than a few missing swings and grazing blows, Briggs landed very little on conseqence. Klitschko, on the other hand, throwing purely from the arms and shoulders, landed a significant number of straight power rights and left-right combinations to the head, and short punches on the inside to win every round on points. Rounds 8, 9, 10 and 11 looked closer to 10-8 rounds, with Briggs being staggered backwards to the ropes on several occasions in the later part of the rounds but not falling. Both fighters appeared in top condition. No fouling, a clean bout.

After the bout, Briggs was hospitalized for facial surgery in Hamburg, Germany, with fractures under both eyes, a concussion, a broken left orbital bone in his face, and a broken nose. Briggs also incurred a torn left bicep in the first round. Briggs was hit 302 times in the head and body by Klitschko, 171 of them being clean shots. Briggs impressive record of 45 knockouts (30 in first round) and the fact that he was the last American to hold the heavyweight title, appeared to figure into the decision to let the fight go the distance. The decision by the referee and Briggs' corner to let the fight go the distance was highly criticized by the sporting media, as Briggs had taken a horrific, life-endangering beating.

Judah dominated the action throughout. He was too quick for the younger Paris, moved in and out and landed power shots repeatedly. Action was paused midway through the opening opening round to fix tape on one of Judah's gloves. Paris appeared to be momentarily hurt in Round 1, but was able to cover and avoid Judah's followup attack. Judah's ring experience and generalship was evident in Round 2 as he continued to slip well and hurt Paris with the left hand. Judah landed straight shots through Paris's guard in the third round. Paris, who was almost turning his back to Judah when hurt, was warned in Round 3 for a low blow. Paris had an improved Round 3 as much of the first half of the round was found in close. Judah closed the round fighting from the outside where he landed against the slower Paris, who looked discouraged. Judah confused Paris with angles and battered him in the 5th Round both to the body and upstairs and clearly looked a class above his opponent. A big right uppercut highlighted the action midway through the round snapping back the head of Paris. Judah closed Round 7 throwing a barrage against a covered Paris. Paris pounded his chest, as he did many times before, and tried to retaliate. Paris looked his best in the first half of Round 8, landing to the body and then to the head. He seemed spent toward the end of the round, however, and Judah pumped him with a jab almost at will. Judah caught Paris early in Round 9 with a straight left hand that rocked his and opened a cut under his left eye. Judah came forward and landed a barrage against a wholly defensive and hurt Paris. With Paris against the ropes and taking shots, the referee stepped in and waved an end to the bout. Paris had a defeated look on his face the entire bout, because Judah was faster than him from the opening bell and outworked him throughout. While Paris 'hung in there' and narrowly escaped getting knocked out a number of times, as the rounds progressed his discouragement came from not having a game plan to counter Judah's stick and move punching from angles which scored all night, and have to grab and hold when his counterpunching attempts were ineffective.

Trainer [[Freddie Roach]] provided live telecast commentary for the NBC Sports Network. A tense and competitive opening round saw each man have his moments. Bute landed well early in Round 2 and Froch came on with a couple of decent shots in the final minute. Round 3 was a big one for Froch as he caused Bute to retreat to the ropes despite a big power punch not landing. Froch pressed forward and worked Bute over against the ropes. Bute returned punches infrequently and attempted to tie up Froch to get through the round. Bute appeared to be mostly recovered early in Round 4, but Froch again rocked him late in the round. By the end of the round, Bute had some blood around his left eye. Froch continued to catch Bute in Round 5. He pinned Bute against the ropes and unleashed a barrage that snapped back Bute's head a few times. Just as Bute slumped against the ropes, the referee stepped in between the two and waved his arms above his head, then began a count, despite Bute not going down, after it appeared he waved an end to the fight. Several people came into the ring, including Froch's promoter. As the referee was still counting, Bute's corner man stepped in and called for an end to the bout.

Katsidis was unable to cope and awaited a heightened pace. In round three, Both Diaz and Katsidis stood toe-to-toe and trading combinations of punches. Diaz’s did the greater damage as Katsidis’ right eye gradually swelled to obstruct his vision. Holding the edge with superior boxing and defense, Diaz controlled the first half of the fight until Katsidis battled back to win most of the later rounds.

HBO's unoffical judge [[Harold Lederman]] scored the bout 118-110 in favour of Diaz.
