Came from a fighting family, and started boxing at the age of 4, under the tutelage of his father James P. Hart, a former fighter in Syracuse. He was later trained by Syracuse trainer Irving Robbins.

Won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions vs. [[Rudy "Ray" Cervantes]] and an Intercity Golden Gloves' championship vs. [[Julius Mendendez]] in 1946, boxing in the welterweight division.

Brother Don was a professional fighter. His brother Ray "Butch" Hart was an amateur boxer
