Came from a fighting family, and started boxing at the age of 4, under the tutelage of his father James P. Hart, a former fighter in Syracuse. He was later trained by Syracuse trainer Irving Robbins.&lt;br /&gt;

Won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions vs. [[Rudy &amp;quot;Ray&amp;quot; Cervantes]] and an Intercity Golden Gloves&#039; championship vs. [[Julius Mendendez]] in 1946, boxing in the welterweight division.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Brother Don was a professional fighter. His brother Ray &amp;quot;Butch&amp;quot; Hart was an amateur boxer&lt;br /&gt;

Served with the U.S. Navy in World War II&lt;br /&gt;
