Efra started training in boxing when he was sixteen years old in Mexico City. He started boxing professionally when he was twenty years old. He was trained by the manager Nacho Brestain.

Born on September 21, 1958 in Los Berros, Mexico, Efra grew up on a ranch and was very close to his family. He loved these natural, simple surroundings and helped his family on the ranch as a child. He walked five miles every day to school. He has many fascinating stories to tell about his life on the ranch when he was a child.

When Efra was fifteen, he wanted to start a new life and provide for his family. He moved to Mexico City, and that is where he started his career in boxing. His original intention upon moving to the city was to study law and he worked at various jobs, one of them being the famous "La Merced" to pay for his schooling and to help his family. He took up boxing because he always enjoyed watching boxing on television when he was a child and wanted to become a boxer. He soon became very serious about it and boxing became a full-time career for Efra, and still is to this day. He moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles, California in 1992.

Other boxers that Efra has worked with are; Humberto "La Chicita" Gonzalez, Daniel Zaragosa, Victor Manuel Ravanalez, Jose Luis Bueno, The Marquez Brothers, and many others.

Running marathons is something that Efra has won four medals for in Mexico City. He runs from Sunset and Laurel Canyon to Van Nuys several times a week for fun and to keep in shape. He also enjoys running long distances in the mountains, such as through Topanga Canyon to Malibu.

The following is based on an interview directly with the boxer Efrain Zepeda. It is being written down by the author/writer, Karen Eisenlord. She has known Efrain personally for ten years. He is also known as "Efra".

The bout with Gregario Vargas on 10/15/88 was Efra's last fight in Mexico City before he came to the United States. It was held at the "Area Mexico". The fight was for eight rounds. The referee stopped the fight during round three because Efra was up against the ropes and being punched continuously. Efra wanted to go on with the fight, but the referee insisted on stopping it. Efra states that the referees in Mexico are very careful with the boxers; so that they do not get injured unnecessarily.

Efra reports that there were two-thousand people attending this fight. The fight took place between 9:00 and 10:00 at night. It was a brisk Fall night. He remembers feeling fine after the fight, with no injuries.
