Even if the RRB IS incorrect, my belief is that we should keep this information in the page, but add that the RRB is incorrect. == What a boring and useless place you're making the fight pages into ==

Honestly, what a waste of time this place is. Reducing fight commentary down to the facts makes this a useless resource. You could have the most exciting fight of the year and not have a single comment on it because
a) there were no knockdowns
b) no points deducted
c) even the word 'exciting' is colouring the fight and purely subjective and
d) the PPV numbers are unknown.
If you follow these principles then every Butterbean fight would have more commentary than an epic Barrera vs Morales war.

Sure you can bury the fight commentary down in the 'talk' page, but who's going to find it. The link is from boxrec, and it links to the main page. And what are they going to find as a comment, if they want more info on the fight, N-O-T-H-I-N-G. (And BTW for the next user, give him a break and call it the 'Discussion' page, because thats how its labelled).

Boxing is opinionated. This should be reflected in the descriptions. This database would be better served as a loose collection of fight reviews than an punctuation freak's paradise. I cant believe the editting/punctuation tip at the beginning. Damm, if I want info about a fight, I should be able to find it easily and I dont give a shit if I got my commas before the closing quotes or not.

Young Maxie Rosenbloom was a legitimate fighter in the thirties. The negative comments you reverted to were only on the Boxing Rec. web site because I posted the associated newspaper articles from which they originated as they were quoted by reporters in the 1930's. I did this with the honest belief that this was a legitimate web site based on documented fights from legitimate professional boxers. The comments you made were based on a Stars and Stripes article written about him. I do not know where they recieved their information, but thus far there is no evidence that Young Maxie Rosenbloom fought Barney Ross or Tony Canzonerio in a professional bout. Please remember that these young boxers grew up together, and if Young Maxie claimed he fought them...it may have been very early on in the careers, if at all. I don't think that there is really any need to disparage the man however, He is my Dad, and although I was very young when he died, he is still a legend to me. As far as I've been able to reconstruct it, is that your father travelled the county with an impressive looking scrapbook. When he fought in Galveston Tx. for example he showed the local pressmen a picture that showed - according to your father - a picture of him and Tony Canzoneri at the weigh-in of a fight at Madison Square Garden.
The careers of the fighters you father claimed to have fought however, have been extensively researched (research of contemporary newspapers/boxing periodicals etc. etc.) and that includes their early careers. The truth is that the claims your father made are simply not true, which can also be illustrated by the results of the fights he did have: as as yet we have yet to come across a report of him winning a fight.
The scrapbook that your father carried can best be seen as a marketing ploy to convince local promoters to place him on their fightcards.
No hard feelings toward anyone and best of luck

Hi Nick. As I had my doubts about this fight ever taking place, I contacted Miles Templeton about it. He happened to be the one that provided Borrington's relative with the information about Frank Borrington's career and the press clippings - including the poster announcing the Walker fight for 1934-6-10. Why the fight was cancelled I do not know, but Mr. Templeton informed me that Walker was replaced with Charlie Belanger who knocked out Borrington in 7.--[[User:Wouter|Wouter]] 10:25, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

I tried talking to him but this is what he said? I don't know what you want to do about it. I'm getting inundated with emails from him.

From other people's experiences I knew that Borrington's relative was not the easiest to work with - to put it mildly. As for the Borrington v. Obie Walker fight: it didn't happen. Not in 1934 (the poster says Sunday June 10 - which makes it 34 not 35), not in 1935 and not in any other year. Thank you so much for adding the info on Harry Smith! I was mainly looking to substantiate the change I've made, as BoxRec had Jim Pettaway incorrectly listed as the 1956 AAU champ. I just added a few more facts to Harry's profile; I have results of his other bouts but this should probably be sufficient for a quick overview. He also won multiple Interservice Championships and boxed at the 1950 and 1951 AAU Championships (lost in the semis and preliminaries, respectively), for example, but I don't want to go overboard here. :)

Bert, we are miscommunicating. In 1937 and 1938, regional GG tournaments took place, and then local champions entered the combined NY tournament. I feel that it is very confusing that you list two New York titles for winners of these tournaments.

For example, Sal Bartolo won the 1937 New England Golden Gloves (outpointed Desmarais in the finals), then entered the 1937 Tournament of Champions and won it as well. His regional title is not listed, but he has 2 New York titles, as if he first won the NY Metro title, and then won the tourney of champions. There was just one New York tournament, so I feel that only one title should be listed. The same applies to Buffalo Golden Gloves champions, etc.

I think the convention is that succession boxes should only be created for major professional world titles. For instance, boxes on IBO world titles and ''The Ring'' awards have been removed from boxer pages. The same should apply to amateur accomplishments.

Maybe just listed as Chicago Golden Gloves? The main thing is that there is a list of Golden Glove Champions from the tournaments.
Plenty of people walking around claiming to be GG Champs that have never even been to a live boxing event.
Also, I started this Category and put it together by trial & error, need assistance starting a Category for - Wisconsin Golden Gloves. thanks.

You're right, LATIN SNAKE. I personally think declarations of titles awarded by sanctioning bodies not named WBA, WBC, IBF or WBO should be removed from boxer pages (while I do not oppose mentioning Ring magazine awards). But if there are IBO titles indeed there could be interim titles of the aforementioned bodies as well. Nevertheless, interim titles have not been included on boxer pages yet (with a few exceptions), but I actually do not know the policy on this issue (assuming there is one). Possible that I have removed some of the few interim title declarations on boxer pages myself. The reason for that might have been that I had read the first comments on your [[User talk:THE LATIN SNAKE|talk page]], on which the user [[User:Fosho|Fosho]] stated his opinion on this issue, which I might have thought was "official". Some fight pages do not provide other information than the BoxRec database: Only the fight code is inserted, only the fact that a certain bout was the fighter's pro debut is mentioned (which is obvious assuming that the boxer's BoxRec Fight Record is complete) or only details are given which can be found in the BoxRec database, too. Thus clicking on these fight pages will not supply the users with further information (assuming that they are entering the fight page from the BoxRec database, which should be the usual case) so that deleting them seems to be a good idea (to save the users' time). On the other hand, editors might want to add more information to these pages in the future so that having deleted them would cause more work.

Example:

[[Fight:34988]] to be compared with [http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=009314&cat=boxer Ricky Hatton in the BoxRec database]

or even:

I know I'm coming in late on this debate, but I do see some value in certain pages that contain no additional information (in comparaison to what appears in the database). Title fights are a good example. A number of editors have devoted significant time to create tables for title fights and have included links to the wiki books within those tables (see one I recently created [[NABO Heavyweight Title Fights|here]]).

While I agree that a user that gets to the wiki blue book from the BoxRec database will not find any additional information in a simple "fight code page", the same cannot be said for the user who reaches that page from the encyclopaedia. The latter doesn't have direct access to the database (its a couple of clicks away).

For the same reason, I believe that simple "boxer code pages" have some value as they enable the creation of links from the encyclopaedia.

It's not too late. I was even going to express the same thoughts but was beaten to the punch.

Users who are watching BoxRec boxer pages do not benefit from boxer and fight pages in the encyclopaedia which merely show code-generated information as these data can already be found on the BoxRec boxer pages themselves. When such users click on open blue book icons, they don't gain further information, but lose time instead.

On the other hand, users who are reading in the encyclopaedia benefit from links to those pages as even code-generated data are additional information from their perspective.

How can this conflict of interests be resolved? Assuming that fight and boxer pages have been moved to proper titles, pages of the form "Fight:12345" and "Human:12345" have become redirect pages connecting the fight and boxer pages to which they redirect to BoxRec. These redirects ought to be deleted so that the blue book icons close. Thus BoxRec users would not open encyclopaedia pages with no additional data any more while encyclopaedia users would still be provided with links to boxer and fight pages which merely show code-generated information.

This procedure would conjure up the danger of duplicate pages though. When an editor sees a closed blue book icon he might start editing it and a duplicate page would finally be created. If he then tried to move the newly created page to a title which exactly agrees with the title of an already existing duplicate page, there would be a notification and the editor would probably merge the pages. But still reorganization would be required and some bits of information entered on the newer page might be the same which had already been shown on the older page so that the editor would have done superfluous work. To save him this trouble there could be guidelines on the [[Help:Contents|Help page]] telling editors to first find out if the fight or boxer page he wants to work on already exists by using the search box. If an editor finds such a page he is to create a corresponding redirect page, which will open the blue book icon, and edit the page he has found.--[[User:Emaster|Emaster]] 01:21, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Soon I'd like to go over the wiki pages of world champions adding title succession boxes where they are missing (as far as WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO titles are concerned) and correcting them where they do not agree with what the BoxRec database says. I assume interim championships are not to be mentioned in those boxes as they do not occur in the lists of title lineages either.

What I've noticed while taking a look at those pages in advance is that in the middle box of a title succession box the dash between the dates that mark the beginning and the end of a champion's reign often lacks a space before it (or there is a space behind it where there should be none).

If a fighter said he was retiring, thereby giving up his title, he retired in my book. In the case of Ali, his third title reign ended by retirement, he wasn't stripped or he didn't abandon his title. If you have questions you should be able to find a lot of stuff through a google search and a little digging. In researching fighters recognized as champions by Ring Magazine and awarded the Ring Title for their respective weight classes, I cannot help but notice that boxrec and the encyclopedia do not mention these titles at all. They are explained in Wikipedia. Don't you mean you don't want to consider them? Why delete the blows, a very legitimate statistic, over a personal whim?

I'm not deleting the punch stats, as that is a statistic the general boxing public understands. If I am, apologize for the unintended mistake. The problem with controls and events is that the general boxing public is clueless to their meaning. Nobody else, aside from you, is coming in the wiki and posting in these stats after bouts. I would think for their to be some credibility we would expect to see others understand the metrics and put them, and not have people asking what it is that controls and events are, as is the case now. Baseball for example, has a lot of stats. Everyone understands ERA or Slugging percentage, and if you are maybe a little more tuned in, OPS. But the general public doesn't understand VORP (Value over replacement player) or DERA (defense adjusted ERA). If Baker had won final round, bout would have been drawn. This fight ended Baker's 13 consecutive winning streak. Jackson scored an upset in this very close bout by taking an unpopular split decision from Baker (45-5) who was the the only number one, outstanding & the only logical contender for Rocky Marciano's heavyweight title from April 1955 to February 1956.
At the time, Archie Moore was returned to the rankings as light heavyweight champ by NBA, however Ring magazine still considered him light heavyweight champ & both top heavyweight & lightweight contender.
