She's a woman, she's a mentor, she's humble and
she's definitely a knockout . . . Natalie Brown is a boxer.
In fact, she is the first female boxer to represent not only Jamaica but the Caribbean as well.

At the age of 23 Natalie is ranked 2nd best welterweight in the world of Women's Amateur Boxing. Born on January 1, 1979, in Maryland, she has always been an athlete.

In an attempt to stay actively involved in sports after graduating from high school, she began aerobic kickboxing. Because her presence in the ring created a reputable distance among other female boxers, Natalie had no choice but to spar with guys.

"I never knew that I would participate in such a sport. At a very young age I dreamed of going to the Olympics but boxing . . . I didn’t wake up on morning waiting to be a boxer. It just happened."

In 1999, Natalie "Too Bad" Brown boxed for the first time and won. Under the coaching wing of 1992 Middle Weight, Bronze medallist Christopher Johnson and famed coach Johnny Gant she was well on her way to making her-story. Although she is considered a hero and role model to young woman around the world, Natalie's shy demeanor and sincere humility make it difficult for her to sing her own praises.

"I sometimes wonder what all the fuss is about. So many people encourage me to acknowledge that this is a talent that God has given me, and that I am a trailblazer. I feel like I am the lucky one to be able to participate in something I love so much."

In 2000, Natalie retired Heather Frady and became the 2000 National Golden Gloves Champion; making her the first female boxer from Georgia to receive the title. This victory placed her in the esteemed company of Jerry Dodds who won the title in the early 70s and Evander Holyfield in 1984, the only Georgian boxers to win the National Golden Gloves. She went on to gain the 2000 National Police Athletic League (PAL) title. Her performance at the national PAL earned her the award of United States Amateur (USA) Boxing Athlete of the Month of December 2000. Natalie victoriously maintained her National Golden Gloves title defeating Jill Emery with whom she later contended at the 2001 United States Championships. Despite her gold medal performance against Emery, she obtained the silver medal. The spectators in Camp Le Jeune's packed stadium were outraged by the judge's decision, and remained in awe of Natalie's poise and strength. Ranked #1 in the United States she went on to win the Silver Medal at the first Woman's World Championships.

Brown's accomplishments in the ring transcend her activism outside of the ring. Without hesitation, she has taken on the position of Student Athletic Director for Newcomer's Network, a non-profit organization for women and children refugees from Bosnia, Somalia, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Sudan and other places where civil war is prevelent.

"These woman and children have been abused - openly mistreated, and they've been led to believe that this is the only way of life; that they don't have options or choices.

If my being there helps them to see that they are capable of whatever they can envision, then I've done more than I could have imagined. I tell them to not strive to be better than another man or woman, but to strive to be the best individual they can be.

I hope that one day they'll look back and know that you never fail, as long as you try your best." Spoken like a true champion.

Natalie "Too Bad" Brown is currently engaged in a rigorous daily training regimen. While her eyes and fists are set on the boxing rings of the 2004 Olympics, she is also preparing for all of the challenges and blessings that life has in store for her.
