Hi guys. I'm Fred, and my grandmother lived next door to the Podles family most of her life. I'm trying to shed a little light on his career, and I'm new to this, so if I need direction, please speak right up. Thanks for the patience.

I also believe he had about a dozen fights, so in the next few months as time permits, I will attempt to source the information.

Joseph L. Podles Sr. was born on November 21, 1909, in Biloxi, Harrison County, Mississippi, USA. He was the father of Joe Poodles. (Joseph L. Podles Jr.), also a professional boxer.

Podles used the surname "Poodles" interchangeably, as the accent of Baltimoreans in his neighborhood coupled with the mispronunciation of the surname often times led to the Podles family often being referred to as the "Poodles" family instead.

After retiring as an active boxer, Mr. Podles once served as president of the Maryland Veteran Boxers Association (Ring 101), gym owner, also promoted bouts, and served as a manager to several boxers, including Tampa Red Barnes, Billy Morris, Charley Chaney, Singing Earl Pitt, Steve Nuss, Sid Silverman, Mike Enrick, Ed Melnick, Todd Cole, and Joe Lindsey (according to The Ring magazine, August 1942, p. 51)

Mr. Podles also became a local celebrity in east Baltimore as a local billiards hall owner (Poodles' Pool Hall), as he had thousands of pictures of active and retired boxers on the walls, and often got visits from many of them. The pool hall was also know for it's fourteen-foot ceilings, and it's three nine-foot long slate billiards tables. Over the years, there have been many human interest stories written about Mr. Podles' career, and pool hall in the local (Baltimore) press.
