Biography
Better known as a movie actor (credits), Mickey Rouke also had an amateur and professional boxing career. He was born in Liberty City, Florida, and attended Miami Beach Senior High School, where he played second-string first baseman for coach Skip Bertman.

Rouke began his amateur boxing career at the Boys Club in Miami, Florida, at age 12. He fought as a bantamweight through welterweight under his birth name of "Phillip Rourke.” He reportedly fought a few fights using his middle name "Andre"— fighting as "Andre Rourke.” He had a mauling style of holding and hitting, shoving and pushing. He continued his amateur boxing career at the 5th Street Gym where he fought in the Police Athletic League Amateur boxing program.

In 1969, at the 5th Street Gym, Rourke sparred with former world welterweight champion Luis Rodriguez, who was in training for his title match with Nino Benvenuti. Rourke reportedly received a concussion in that sparring match. Rourke received yet another concussion fighting in a 1971 Golden Gloves tournament. He was told by doctors to take a year off and decided to retire from amateur competition. From 1968 to 1971, Rourke had compiled an amateur boxing record of 20-6 with 17 knockouts. He was disqualified 4 times and lost 2 decisions. (According to his Internet Movie Database biography, Rourke won 12 straight first round knockouts as an amateur.)

As an amateur, Rouke had been friendly with pro-boxer Tommy Torino. (Torino later promoted some of Rourke's professional fights.) Rouke returned to boxing as a professional just to see "if I still can do it for real, and not make believe." He was trained by former professional boxer and lightweight contender Freddie Roach at Miami’s 5th Street Gym and the Outlaw Boxing Club Gym in Los Angeles.

Rouke made $250.00 for his pro debut. In his first year and a half as a professional boxer, Rourke made a million dollars. He has sparred with such well-known boxers as James Toney, Tommy Morrison, John David Jackson, and John Montes. He once appeared on the cover of World Boxing magazine (June 1994). Rourke wanted to have sixteen pro fights and end his career by fighting for a world title. However, he retired after seven bouts and never got his desired title shot. His boxing career resulted in facial injuries which required a number of operations to repair his damaged face.

At one time, Rouke visited former world middleweight boxing champion Carlos Monzon in Argentina, where Monzon was serving a prison sentence for killing his common-law-wife. Rourke was rumored to have sparred with Monzon there in prison, but photos of Rourke's visit (which appeared in Argentine newspapers and magazines) fail to support this claim.

On January 6, 1994, Rourke was arrested outside the night-club he owned at 1203 Washington Avenue, on South Beach, called "Mickey's," by Miami Beach police officers for causing a disturbance.

On February 1, 2007, Rourke made the news when he led a protest on Espanola Way in South Beach to protest the treatment of pet-store pets. Rourke had bought an expensive puppy at a pet store on Espanola Way and the dog died after a week. Rourke and a group of 20 protesters, some former sparring partners from Rourke's boxing days, carried picket signs and demanded the store owners be jailed.

The heavyweight division has its roots back as far as the 1720s with James Figg, but it was only with Jem Mace that the term "heavy weight" became prevalent. By the 1870s it probably covered all weights above 160/166 lbs.

Heavyweight (201 lbs-unlimited; over 91.4 kg; minimum 14 stone, 4 pounds): First originated as 160 pounds plus (over 72.7 kg or 11 stone, 4 pounds) by Jack Broughton (in 1738); next established by the ABA as unlimited (in 1889); reaffirmed no limit by London's National Sporting Club (in 1909); changed by the NSYAC to 175-plus pounds in 1920; modified again in 1979 by the WBC (followed by the WBA in 1982 and the IBF in 1983); again modified in 2004 by the WBA, WBC and IBF to mean anything over 200 pounds.

James Figg was the first English champion (in 1719); Tom Molineaux first American champion (in 1810); Jem Mace first Undisputed Champion (in 1870); 1st Commonwealth (British Empire) champion John Knifton (in 1877); Paddy Ryan first World champion (in 1880); John L. Sullivan first Undisputed World Champion (in 1885); first British champion Jem Smith (in 1895); first NYSAC champion Jack Dempsey (in 1920); first fighter recognized by the NBA/WBA as champion was Jack Dempsey (in 1921); first WBC champion Sonny Liston (in 1963); first IBF champion Larry Holmes (in 1983); and the first WBO champion was Francesco Damiani (in 1989).
A sportswriter for several New York City newspapers, prior to his association with The Ring, Fleischer wrote more than 40 million words and 57 books on boxing during his career, including the multi-volume Ring Record Book.
