From The New York Times:

Paul (The Ultimate) Vaden and Terrible Terry Norris, both of San Diego, were said to have an intense dislike for each other, which lent edgy anticipation to their junior middleweight fight. Except that Vaden (24-1, 12 knockouts) proved to be the ultimate no-show. Content to rest on the ropes, loath to counterpunch, he simply absorbed Norris's punches, the spectators' disgust and the Pennsylvania boxing commission's enmity.

Norris (41-6, 25 knockouts) won a unanimous decision to claim both the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council junior middleweight crowns. George Bochetto, the Philadelphia boxing commissioner, said that Vaden's $250,000 purse would be withheld for "conduct unbecoming a champion," which presumably meant a lack of effort.

Vitali Klitschko beats Chisora with one hand<br>
<small>By Dan Rafael, ESPN.com, February 21, 2012</small>

We already knew that Klitschko, even at 40, was a dominant heavyweight champion and one of the best big men in history. Now we know he can also win a fight with one arm. Making the eighth defense of his third title reign, Ukraine's Klitschko won a rough, physical fight against England's hard-charging, but much smaller, Chisora, and he did it essentially using only his right hand. That is because Klitschko suffered a torn ligament in his left shoulder in the third round. The injury will not require surgery, but will likely keep Klitschko out of action until the fall, meaning he will miss a planned summer bout. The injury also left him unable to use his best weapon -- the jab -- with any serious impact. Instead, Klitschko took Chisora apart with right hand after right hand in a fight televised in the United States on Epix.

Klitschko threw straight rights, overhand rights and rights to the body throughout the fight and connected with a ton of them. At one point between rounds, Chisora was spitting pure blood into the bucket in his corner. For the fight, Klitschko landed 211 of 605 blows (35 percent) while Chisora was limited to landing only 163 of 359 blows (45 percent). Chisora, who showed zero class by slapping Klitschko hard across the face during the staredown after the weigh-in, took a lot of heavy shots and deserves credit for his chin and big heart. He also dished out some punishment to Klitschko, who has taken so little over the years. From the outset, Klitschko went to work with his right hand while Chisora missed wildly with a lot of shots. But between the injury and Chisora's constant pressure, Klitschko did slow down some in the middle rounds even though he never appeared in any serious danger. Chisora had predicted an eighth-round knockout, but that round came and went with little concern for Klitschko.

Even though Klitschko -- who, along with George Foreman, is the only heavyweight champion to defend the title past age 40 -- has cruised through his title reign virtually unchallenged and having won nearly every round, this was probably the toughest (and most crowd-pleasing) fight he has had since he won a vacant heavyweight title to begin his second reign against Corrie Sanders in 2004.

Although Chisora lost his second fight in a row and for the third time in four bouts, he is a lot better than that record looks. For an inexplicable reason, Chisora was out of shape at a career-heavy 261 pounds for his competitive points loss to Tyson Fury last July for his first loss. In December, Chisora was outright robbed in a horrible hometown decision in Helsinki, Finland, to Finland's Robert Helenius. But it was a good enough performance to earn him a shot at Klitschko.

After the fight, Chisora had his second fight of the night when he confronted loudmouthed former titlist David Haye, also of England. Haye had crashed the post-fight news conference to call out Klitschko and wound up in a well-publicized brawl with Chisora, who confronted him. It was a mess and a disgrace. Klitschko, the regal and classy champion that he is, watched in bemusement.
Bout Summary
The first third of the fight contained four extremely close rounds. John started to assert himself as the boxer while Marquez repeatedly tried to slash into John's guard with heavy punches. John also landed his share of telling blows throughout these rounds and seemed to be the quicker of the two fighters.

With the start of round five, Marquez appeared to land the heavier punches as John became less active in the bout. This trend continued into round ten, where Marquez was deducted a point for repeated low blows against John. In round eleven, John appeared to pick up the tempo. This round led to another point deduction against Marquez which sealed a 10-8 round for John. As the bout came to a close in round twelve, it was clear John was the fresher of the two fighters. The twelfth was a close round, but a round won by John.

The only western journalist to attend the bout, Scott Mallon of Ring Magazine and The Sweet Science, scored the bout 116-110 in favor of John. His report and those of the Asian journalists in attendance suggested the bout was a just decision.

Comments
*Marquez's scores were deducted twice for repeated low blows in rounds ten and eleven.
*This was the second mandatory fight for Chris John.
*The IBF decided to strip Juan Manuel Marquez's IBF belt, after no promoter bid for the IBF mandatory title fight Marquez vs. Fahprakorb Rakkiatgym (August 2005).
*The IBF's decision influenced the WBA to revoke Marquez's status as the super champion, and soon instructing John as the regular champion to fight Marquez in a mandatory bout.
*The WBA conducted a purse bid for John vs. Marquez, October 2005. The only bidder MTM Promotions won the purse bid with the minimum bid of US$ 125,001.
*MTM Promotions sold the right of the fight to the Indonesian promoter Muhammad Arsyad, enabling the fight to be featured in Indonesia.
*March 4, 2006 became the final date of the fight after two postponements of initially scheduled matches on December 9, 2005 and February 4, 2006, canceled due to John's ankle ligament injury.
*The venue was actually a parking lot of the Putri Karang Melenu Sports Hall, Tenggarong, which was developed into a new open air venue, and named by Fight News correspondent Jeffrey Pamungkas as "The Golden Gate Arena".
<br clear=all>

Career Overview
Erik Morales has proven himself to be one of this era's most exciting fighters.

Legend has it, Morales was born in a boxing gym. His father, Jose, was a professional fighter himself. Morales quickly excelled in the sport and the amateur ranks and desired to turn pro. At first, his father Jose was strongly against the possibility. He knew just how difficult it was to be successful in such a brutal sport. Ironically, it was his mother who gave young Erik her blessing to box professionally.

Morales would do well in the pro ranks. His first fight in the USA against Juan Luis Torres caught the eye of a boxing manager who worked with Bob Arum's Top Rank Boxing promotion company. The manager immediately got Morales a deal with Top Rank. From then on Morales would excel. He admitted to having a great difficulty making the 122-lb limit and in a recent KO Magazine interview said he thought about moving up in weight in 1996 but decided to stay at the lighter weight.

He eventually fought Daniel Zaragoza for the WBC title and won stopping the old champion in 11 rounds. Morales was to fight Junior Jones, a dangerous and accomplished fighter from Brooklyn. Jones's record coming into the bout was 44-3. He was coming off of a loss to Kennedy McKinney but was said to have been sharing a training camp with Evander Holyfield and training hard for this fight. Morales suprised everyone by stopping Jones in just four rounds.

Morales would make a few other notable defenses in the next year, including beating former Olympic Games Silver Medalist Wayne McCullough.

On Feburary 19, 2000, Morales would begin one of boxing's most acrimonious and brutal rivalries, against Marco Antonio Barrera. There had been bad blood for years between the two coming into their fight. The fight proved to be a great one, with both fighters brawling round after round. Morales won on points but many boxing fans vehemently disagreed. In fact, the WBO refused to give Morales the title after he beat Barrera, saying the decision was wrong. This would be Morales's last fight at 122 pounds. He would then move up to 126 pounds.

He fought for the WBC featherweight title against Guty Espadas and won a decision, although some fans also questioned the outcome of this fight. A bout between Erik Morales and Prince Naseem Hamed was discussed for years, but with Hamed losing to Barrera this bout fell through. Following Barrera's victory over Hamed, public interest grew for a rematch. The Barrera-Morales rematch was set for June 2002. Morales would suffer his first defeat in 42 fights, but again there was a controversial ending, with most fans believing Morales deserved the win by a margin of 115-113.

Morales went moved up to 130 pounds and won titles against Jesus Chavez and Carlos Alberto Hernandez. Morales then fought Barrera in a rubber match. Many people questioned this match, as Barrera was coming off a terrible loss to Manny Pacquiao, and people thought he was a shot fighter with no chance of winning. Barrera proved everybody wrong and beat Morales. This is the only Morales-Barrera bout where people generally did not question the outcome.

A Pacquiao-Marquez rematch fell through because Marquez demanded too much money. Promoter Bob Arum then offered Pacquiao the chance to fight another fighter of his, Erik Morales. The bout was considered a fan's dream, as both Morales and Pacquiao are crowd pleasers with their "all-out" styles. Pacquiao was coming off a potential 2004 "Fight of the Year" with Juan Manuel Marquez, and Morales was as well, with Marco Antonio Barrera. Morales won over Pacquiao by scores of 115-113. He then movied up in weight to 135 pounds, with the desire to be the first Mexican to win titles in four different weight classes, but he lost to Zahir Raheem by wide margins. In January 2006, Morales was stopped in the 10th round by Manny Pacquiao in a rematch at 130 pounds.

Ten months later, Morales and Pacquiao met for a third time, with Pacquiao winning once again by knock out in three rounds. Morales would step in the ring in August 2007 to challenge David Diaz for the WBC lightweight title. Despite knocking Diaz down in the first round, Morales would lose a close decision and announce his retirement after the fight.

Promoting
Since 2004, Morales has been promoting boxing shows under the promotional company Promociones Box Latino, primarily out of his hometown of Tijuana, as well as in other cities in the Obregon and Baja North States.

Politics
In July 2018, Morales was elected to Mexico's Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Mexico's bicameral legislature, representing the 7th district of Baja California, as a member of the MORENA party.

SANCHEZ RETAINS HIS TITLE BY STOPPING GOMEZ IN 8TH<br>
<small>By Michael Katz | New York Times | August 22, 1981</small>

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Aug. 21— Wilfredo Gomez, who almost lost the battle of the bulge this morning, was routed in the "Battle of the Little Giants" tonight when Salvador Sanchez of Mexico stopped the previously undefeated Puerto Rican at 2:09 of the eighth round of their long-awaited World Boxing Council featherweight title fight.

Referee Carlos Padilla stopped the fight after Gomez, with his right cheekbone broken, both eyes closed and his nose bleeding, bravely got up from his second knockdown in this confrontation of champions.

Sanchez, cool and calm as always in defending his title, almost scored a first-round knockout in a wild fight that more than lived up to expectations. He had Gomez down in the opening 30 seconds with a stunning left hook-right cross combination thrown with his back to the ropes. Sanchez then pulverized the cheekbone, which swelled gradually throughout the fight until Gomez's right eye was almost hidden.

Yet Gomez, who had a streak of 33 straight knockout victories - including 14 in title bouts - after starting his pro career with a draw in 1974, somehow survived the opening round and even went back on the attack at the start of the second.

Throughout the fight there were fierce toe-to-toe exchanges as Sanchez, who earned a reputation for an iron chin in stopping Danny (Little Red) Lopez twice last year, did not back away from the smaller man.

Trouble Making the Weight

Gomez, 24 years old, the W.B.C. superbantamweight (122-pound division) champion since February 1977, was moving up in weight class, but apparently not enough. He had to get up at 4:30 this morning, 4 1/2 hours before the weigh-in, to take off four pounds in order to make the featherweight limit of 126.

"There is no question the weight influenced the outcome immensely," said Gabriel Penagaricano, one of Gomez's lawyers, who represented the battered boxer at the post-fight news conference. "But that is absolutely no excuse. Sanchez proved tonight he was a formidable champion."

Sanchez, 22, trained for the bout, sparring 220 rounds, and was a solid 126 pounds when he entered the Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion ring. He also appeared supremely confident despite the 9-5 odds favoring Gomez.

Gomez Starts Quickly

Gomez quickly backed Sanchez against the ropes. A mistake. Sanchez, a marvelous counter-puncher, took a combination to the head and then fired back a left hook followed by a straight right that not only sent Gomez down, but dazed him.

Sanchez, better known for his right hands, scored heavily with more hooks as he calmly chased Gomez around the ring. It appeared for a while that Gomez would never survive such a battering. Along the way, Sanchez broke Gomez's cheekbone. Sanchez was unable to finish the fight in the first round, but the damage was done. By the sixth round, Gomez's left eye was also nearly closed and his nose was bleeding.

A few days ago, Sanchez had warned Gomez: "You had better take your picture before the fight because after I get through with you, you won't recognize yourself."

Sanchez carried out his prediction. But this was not as one-sided as Gomez's face, compared with Sanchez's unmarked one, looked. Gomez may have been weak from running at 4:30 in the morning and he may have been battered in the ring, but he never gave up.

And the three judges - the referee does not vote in Nevada - had the fight very close going into the eighth round. Judge Duane Ford had it 67-65, Henry Elespuru 67-66, and Charles Minker 67-65, all for Sanchez, on the 10-point scoring system.

Unification Bout a Possibility

Sanchez, in scoring his 40th victory against only one loss and a draw, must now be emphatically accorded a place as one of the finest boxers in any weight class. Don King, the co-promoter, said he was asked tonight by Eusebio Pedroza, the Panamanian who holds the World Boxing Association version of the 126-pound title, to arrange a unification fight. Sanchez said he would be interested, but he was more interested in going up to challenge Alexis Arguello for the W.B.C. lightweight championship.

Jose Sulaiman, the W.B.C. president, said after the fight he might fine Gomez for refusing to give a post-bout urine sample, as required by the sanctioning body's rules.

Only two years ago, Gomez was mentioned as Roberto Duran's chief rival for the mythical "pound-for-pound" title. Now he is a man without any title.

Gomez promised that, win or lose, he would relinquish the 122-pound title. Mike Ayala of San Antonio, Tex., and Juan Antonio Lopez of Mexico, the No. 1 and 2 W.B.C. contenders, are scheduled to fight for the vacant title.

The new champion's first defense was decided tonight when Juan (Kid) Meza of Los Angeles, the No. 3 W.B.C. 122-pounder, avenged a 1980 loss and stopped the No. 4 challenger, Carlos Mendoza, a Panamanian now living in Mexico, in the 10th round of their scheduled 12-round contest.

Earlier on the undercard, Larry Holmes's little brother, Mark, continued as an undefeated middleweight, scoring his 13th straight victory with a unanimous eight-round decision over Fred Reed of Chicago. Vic Drakulich is one of nine children born to a Serbian father, Duke Drakulich, who coached high school football, and an Italian mother. Drakulich excelled in high school and was named to the all-state honorable mention team as a defensive end for his football team. He is a 1979 graduate from the Pacific McGeorge School of Law and, outside of boxing, is a personal injury and insurance attorney.

Drakulich came to boxing in the the early 1980s, when he began working corners for amateur fights. He was later asked if he would like to judge. Judging turned into refereeing and in 1985, Drakulich was contacted by the Nevada Athletic Commission to enter the professional ranks. He primarily works bouts in the state of Nevada, but has also referred in Panama, Thailand, Mexico, Germany, Japan, and Costa Rica. Gatti earned Round 1 with quick flurries that seemed to frustrate Ward, who looked to get in close. A cut opened, midway through the opening round, on the outside of Ward's right eye; a result of a left hook from Gatti. It would trickle down the side of ward's face throughout. Gatti took the 2nd round appearing supremely confident, moving in and out well and connecting with solid combinations both upstairs and to the body. Gatti was warned in Round 2 by Referee Frank Cappuccino to "keep them punches up brother." Micky Ward had a much stronger Round 3 as Gatti, who did not have the same energetic movement, boxed less and the two traded punches. Ward rocked Gatti at 1:07 of Round 4 with a right hand, but Gatti returned the favor at 2:05 with a left hook which caused Ward to take a couple of steps back. A left hand which landed just below Ward's waistband at 2:45 of Round 4 sent Ward immediately down and in pain. Cappuccino, ruled the punch to have been a low blow and penalized Gatti one point. Ward was told he would be given five minutes to recover, but due to miscommunication with the timekeeper the bell rang and the round was ended just seconds later. In Round 4, Ward began bleeding from the nose and a cut to his bottom lip. Gatti began to develop swelling to his left eye. In the 5th Round, Gatti connected well early with combinations and Ward found more success late. A flurry by Gatti sent Ward back into the ropes at 2:40, to which Ward came forward and replied with an uncontested combination to Gatti's chin and hurt him with a left hook to the body. Also in the 5th, which was referred to by broadcaster Jim Lampley as "a hellacious round", a nick opened in the corner of Gatti's right eye. Arturo returned to movement and boxing in Round 6 and found increased success. He slipped in and out well and and at times peppered Ward with flurries. Ward, who was determined to come forward and land on the inside, found some success with the right hand upstairs. In Round 7, Gatti dominated the round and worked over Ward with combinations to the head. Toward the end of the 7th, Ward switched to a southpaw stance momentarily. Following the round, Ward was told by his trainer/half-brother, Dickie Eklun, "Bang the shit our of him. Don't be a punching bag. If you're going to be a punching bag, I'm not going to let this go like this. Fight hard." The 8th Round was strong for Mickey. He was able to get inside and bang away against Gatti who was clearly arm weary. Gatti landed a nice combination in the final minute of the round, but Ward came back, hurt Gatti, and had him against the ropes and on the defensive as the bell sounded. Ward come out throwing aggressively as the bell sounded to begin Round 9. A left hook to the body sent Arturo Gatti down to one knee at 0:15 of Round 9. He remained one knee before getting to his feet at the count of nine. Ward came forward, as all those in attendance were on the feet and applauding, and connected with a barrage that had stumbled Gatti but he remarkably kept his feet. Gatti retaliated with looping shots around Ward's guard, got him against the ropes and rocked him with combinations which landed to the head and body. Ward gathered himself and came back. He hurt Gatti to the body, and ripped him with combinations as Gatti appeared out on his feet and unable to raise his arms to block. Action was allowed to continue, however, as it seemed likely that the fight could, or maybe should, be stopped at any time. Gatti trainer James (Buddy) McGirt advised his fighter that he would not allow him to keep taking that time of punishment. Prior to the start of Round 10, Ward and his corner believed the fight had been stopped and Ward raised an arm as if victorious. Cappuccino advised him that was not over and to return to his corner. Gatti had some energy early in Round 10 and landed shots to Ward's head and body. Ward, unfazed, through punches of his own. The 10th Round was 30 seconds short because the timekeeper did not stop the clock amid the confusion at the beginning of the round. At the final bell both men were exhausted and embraced. By the end of the fight, Ward had a large knot on his left cheek bone and complained of pain in his right elbow
*Trainer: Cuyo Hernandez
Ruben Olivares was born on 14 January 1947 in an area of Mexico City called Colonia Bondojo, a tough district where street fighting was commonplace. His father, Salomon Olivares, and mother, Esperanza Avila, had 12 children, but only six survived Felipe, Emma, Margarita, Raul, Ruben and David. While Ruben was still a toddler, his father left to work on a construction site in Oregon. When he eventually returned to Mexico City, having mastered the building business, he invested his earnings in some land on which he built houses. 'He's not rich, but I wouldn't call him poor, Olivares said of him in later life. Father and son would eventually form a partnership building apartments.

It did not take the young Olivares long to find that his talents were fistic rather than academic and, consequently, he took 10 years to finish elementary school due to losing so much time through suspensions for fighting. The headmaster told him Better go home and come back at the end of the courses we'll give you the diploma anyway. Just keep yourself far away from here.

Olivares took up boxing at 15. with his fathers approval while still at junior high school. Football had previously been his first love he captained a local side called Santander but his interest in boxing was sparked by his friendship with two local fighters who were regular performers at the famous Arena Coliseo, in Mexico City.

We didn't have a TV set at home, said Olivares. So I remember paying a lady 25 centavos to allow me to watch one of my friends, Dumbo Perez, fight Chucho Hernandez. Dumbo was winning until Hernandez knocked him out with a left hook in the last round, and that decided me on becoming a pro fighter.

The following day, Olivares went to the Jordan Gym in downtown Mexico City, where the trainer was Manuel Chilero Carillo, an old man with vast experience of the game. He was a shy, bashful boy, recalled Carillo, who told Olivares that if he took the business seriously he could become Golden Gloves champion. Six months later, he would fulfill that prophecy.

After early losses to Fernando Blanco, in the final of the Olympic trials, and Octavio 'Famoso' Gomez, Olivares pestered his newly-recruited manager Arturo Hernandez to let him turn pro. Hernandez was suitably cautious. Go pro now and they'll make chopped meat of you, he warned the youngster. It s tough, and you re not ready yet. Maybe in a year.

Olivares was therefore forced to spend a further 10 months in the amateurs, during which time he fulfilled Carillo s prediction, winning the Golden Gloves title after sustaining a broken jaw in the semi-final, against Rafael Resindez. It was the only knockdown Olivares suffered in his amateur career. I was beating him easy until he caught me with a right to the chin, Olivares remembered. It was the second round, and I knew immediately the jaw was broken. I didn't tell my corner until after the fight, and Hernandez took me to a dentist before the final to have a special gumshield made. The dentist warned me Whatever you do, don't open your mouth once the fight starts. I won the title on a second-round knockout.

That painfully-won success meant that it was time to turn pro, which Olivares did with a first-round knockout of Isidro Sotelo, at Gomez Palacio, in January 1965. The shrewd Hernandez, recognizing the special relationship between fighter and trainer, hired Carillo to look after the youngster and the team stayed together throughout the glory years, even though Olivares' relationship with Hernandez was often strained. The flyweight with the heavyweight punch was an instant sensation, ripping through 23 knockouts before being taken the distance for the first time, by Felipe Gonzalez, a hard man of whom Olivares said: I must have hit him a thousand times, but he wouldn't go down.

He restored his reputation in his next fight, a fourth-round knockout of local rival Julio Guerrero, who had also been making a name for himself as a knockout artist. Unusually for the left-hooking Olivares, the winning blow this time was a right to the body which left Guerrero gasping for breath on the canvas. By now, weight was becoming a problem for the growing 20-year-old, and a move up to bantamweight was inevitable.

In July 1967, German Bastidas fought back from two knockdowns to earn a 10-round draw to spoil Olivares s one hundred per cent record. However, six months later, Bastidas was knocked out in a rematch as the fierce-hitting Mexican continued his drive towards a title shot. His list of victims included an amateur conqueror, Octavio Gomez, the ex-flyweight king Salvatore Burruni of Italy, and Jose Medel, one of a generation of great Mexican bantams. It wasn't all plain sailing, however, as Olivares had to come off the floor to win against both Ernie De La Cruz and Takao Sakurai, the 1964 Olympic champion.

Immediately after the contest. Olivares belied his aggressive ring image with the class and sensitive way in which he treated the beaten champion. Hugging the loser in the dressing room afterwards. he told him You gave me the chance, and I will never forget that. If you want another fight you can have it it would be a pleasure to go into the ring again with a gentleman like you. My home in Mexico City is yours. Come whenever you want you will always be my special guest.

Olivares later told the press I want to say that Lionel was a great champion. He had guts and he didn t quit, even when he was hurt. He shook me a couple of times but I knew I could take his punch and keep coming. I just overpowered him. He s the best boxer I ever met. Lucky for me he doesn t punch very hard, otherwise I would have been in trouble.

The new bantamweight champion s first challenger was Alan Rudkin, a Liverpudlian who had fought well in losing 15-rounders for the title against Fighting Harada and Rose, each time on the champion s home ground. The match was made by Los Angeles promoter George Parnassus, who signed contracts with the English camp when Rudkin was boxing a routine non-title fight in Shoreditch Town Hall, London's most famous small-hall boxing venue. The British challenger would earn around 8,000, pushed to 12,000 with ancillary rights, which was good money for a bantamweight contender at the time.

The fight took place at the Forum, in December 1969,and Rudkin was butchered in five minutes 30 seconds in front of a crowd of 15,000, paying $175,000. There were also television links to Britain, Mexico and Australia where both men were respected for their battles with Rose. A left hook dropped the challenger after two minutes, and, although he counter-attacked gamely, the fight was effectively over from that point. He missed with a wild left early in the second and Olivares used his own left to bring the second knockdown. The Englishman got up quickly to take the mandatory eight. and was then led to his corner to have his gumshield rinsed before being waved back into action. When a precise right and two hooks put him down for a third time, referee John Thomas had seen enough.

Olivares had certainly looked the part against Rudkin and most observers agreed that the little Mexican had the ability to be champion for a long time.

He is the greatest, there is nobody to compare with him, Rudkin acknowledged after their fight. I tried boxing him, but that was no good. He feints and picks punches. Every time he hits, he numbs. I didn't even feel the punches that put me on the floor, and those are the ones that really hurt.

With Rudkin out of the way, Olivares was now set for an even stiffer test, against Jesus Castillo, in April 1970 The showdown between Olivares and his Mexican rival Jesus Chucho' Castillo was a huge attraction. Castillo's points defeat by Lionel Rose in his previous title bid, in December 1968, had set off a chair-throwing riot which wrecked the Inglewood Forum, but promoter George Parnassus decided to risk staging the fight there again. The gamble paid off, with 18,762 fans paying a Californian record of $281,840 which, with closed circuit TV revenue, boosted the overall take to $458,240.

After a quiet start, the fight burst into life in the third round when Castillo clipped the champion with a perfect right-hand counter which caught him coming in and dropped him to his knees momentarily. Olivares was up before referee George Latka could start a count, but the damage had been done. Castillo stayed on top for the next few rounds until Olivares forced his way back in the seventh and then pinned the challenger against the ropes for most of the eighth round. Castillo rallied again, but the edge was with Olivares and he controlled the final third of an action-packed fight to run out a clear points winner with scores of 10-5, 9-4 and 7-6. Sure, I'll give him another chance, Olivares said. I ll give anybody a chance. I m a fighting champion.

He kept his word and the pair met again at the Forum in October. It was another blockbuster for promoter Parnassus, with 16,007 paying a gross $215,902. The fight was not quite as thrilling as the first, with the champion massively handicapped by a horrible cut over the left eye which appeared in the first round. He claimed he had been butted, but Castillo denied the allegation and said an overhand right had done the damage.

Either way, the wound was too bad to allow Olivares to complete the full 15 rounds. Referee Dick Young gave him every chance to salvage the fight before, acting on the advice of the ringside doctor, he called a halt after two minutes 27 seconds of the 14th. Olivares s title was gone, and with it his proud unbeaten record. It was his first loss in 61 fights, of which he had won 56 inside the distance.

Naturally, there had to be a third and deciding fight, and this took place at the Forum in April 1971. It was not quite edge-of-the-seat entertainment, but the crowd of 18,141 still got full value for their money as Olivares dominated for long periods. He was nailed by a long left hook in the sixth which dumped him on the seat of his pants, but, once referee John Thomas had completed the mandatory eight count, Olivares made sure that Castillo couldn't get close enough to follow up.

Olivares opened a cut on the champion s right eye and his footwork made Castillo miss repeatedly. There was no dispute about the outcome, Olivares winning by wide margins of 9-4, 12-3 and 10-3. The fight drew a gate of $254,155, meaning that the three-fight series had grossed over a million dollars, a remarkable tribute to the popularity of the two Mexicans.

Olivares s next defence saw him go over old ground when he stopped Kazuyoshi Kanazawa, in 14 rounds, with the fight held at the Aichi Prefectural Gym, in Nagoya, Japan in October 1971.

Olivares had stopped the Japanese fighter in two rounds in 1969, but Kanazawa had improved enormously in the interim and this time gave the champion all he could handle. Twice, in the eighth and again in the 13th, he had the Mexican tottering on the edge of a knockdown, but somehow Olivares kept going and, in the 14th, summoned one last effort which finally broke the challenger. Kanazawa was down three times for an automatic stoppage after two minutes of the round, and both winner and loser finished exhausted. Olivares sustained damage around the left eye, which later required corrective surgery.

A long rest might have been sensible after such a gruelling contest, but instead Olivares was back in the ring in December, defending against Mexican rival Jesus Pimentel, a tough contender who was unbeaten in his previous 15 fights. A fierce attack in the sixth sent the challenger through the ropes and onto the ring apron and Pimentel took steady punishment thereafter. At the end of the 11th round Pimentel s manager, Harry Kabakoff, waved his fighter to the corner and said to Olivares: Ruben, you're the winner. Pimentel, a 31-year-old veteran of 85 pro fights (78 wins), immediately announced his retirement. Five years ago he d have beaten Olivares, but now it s too late, said Kabakoff. The fight is featured in Video Action.

It was an open secret that the champion was struggling to make the bantamweight limit by this time, and the chances were that even if he had been successful in his defence against compatriot Rafael Herrera, in Mexico City, in March 1972, he would have relinquished the crown and moved up to featherweight. As it turned out, Herrera saved Olivares the decision, snatching the title on an eighth-round knockout which stunned the boxing world.

Herrera won easily, out boxing the sluggish champion in the first six rounds and cutting him on the right cheek before dispatching him with a clinical right to the jaw after 85 seconds of the eighth round. It was a measure of his superiority not one of the three officials gave Olivares a single round the cards showed 70-65, 70-66 and 70-67 at the finish.

Curiously, Herrera was in tears in the dressing room afterwards, while Olivares laughed and joked with the press, presumably relieved he would never again have to endure the rigours of boiling down to 118 pounds.

Olivares took a five-month break from the ring before returning to outscore world-class Chilean featherweight Godfrey Stevens. He then lost a 10-round rematch to Herrera, who had himself moved up a division after being dethroned by Enrique Pinder. It appeared that Olivares was having trouble settling in the new division, and the power which had carried him to so many bantamweight victories was not so evident against the heavier men.

He began 1973 with an easy win over Walter Seeley, of New York, and then found himself cast as the test piece for Bobby Chacon, the explosive Californian who had replaced him as the darling of the crowds at the Inglewood Forum. Chacon had won all 19 of his fights, 17 by knockout, but the step up came too quickly for him and Olivares gave him a boxing lesson, stopping him in nine rounds to win the vacant North American Boxing Federation title. The victory put Olivares in line for a featherweight world title shot, but he neglected his training and was surprisingly stopped in five rounds by Art Hafey, a rugged Canadian, in his next outing.

With his career on the line, Olivares got himself into shape for the rematch and won a hard-fought split decision which gave him a shot at the vacant WBA version of the world title, against Zensuke Utagawa, of Japan, at the Forum, in July 1974. It proved an easy night s work for the Mexican, who floored Utagawa three times for a seventh-round knockout.after a couple of non-title wins, Olivares risked his belt against the power-punching Alexis Arguello. Relations with manager Arturo Hernandez were sour, which may have been why Hernandez told reporters before the fight that Olivares seemed to lack the desire he once had.

The match, like all of Olivares' appearances, was a big draw and a crowd of 14,313 at the Forum paid $186,000 to see him build a wide points lead...until Arguello found the punch to knock him out after 30 seconds of the 13th round. He hurt me in the eighth, ninth and 10th rounds, the new champion acknowledged. I thought I was going down. I knew I was behind on points and had to knock him out to win.

The irrepressible Olivares bounced back immediately, taking the WBC crown from Bobby Chacon, at the Forum in June 1975. The champion had a run of seven straight knockouts behind him and his confidence was high, but he was wiped out in two rounds as Olivares gave the last truly devastating performance of his career. Three months later, he was an ex-champ again after David Kotey, a lanky puncher from Ghana, outpointed him over 15 rounds.

In his next outing he was knocked out in seven rounds by future WBC champ Danny Lopez, and that was effectively the end of him as a serious performer. He fought on for a few more years and his victims included future WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Ramirez, but the defeats accumulated. He had one last shot at glory when Eusebio Pedroza gave him a crack at the WBA title, in Houston, in July 1979, but he was stopped in 12 rounds.

Ruben's Prodigy
Aft er losing to Margarito Marquez in 1981, Olivares announced his retirement, but he returned to the ring in 1986 and fought a four round draw. In 1988, in his final comeback attempt, Olivares was knocked out in the fourth round by veteran Ignacio Madrid in a scheduled 10 rounder. Olivares was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991, and also was later inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame. He has appeared on occasion at annual Hall of Fame events.

Olivares was co-named Bantamweight Fighter of the Century, along with fellow Mexican and ex-champion Carlos Zarate, by the Associated Press in 1999.
*Fans booed the performance and many of them left before the fight was over.
*Per Wikipedia's entry on Hamed: " In a post-fight interview with Ian Darke, Hamed assured a quick return to the ring, which ultimately never happened. Hamed was just 28 years old when he stopped fighting. For years, Hamed did not confirm whether he had retired or not; there were talks of several fights in the UK and in the US, including Hamed's brother and manager, Riath, speaking to HBO about a potential fight with Michael Brodie. In an interview for BBC Radio Sportsweek, Hamed said that his retirement was largely due to chronic problems with his hands, including multiple fractures as well as surgery." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naseem_Hamed#Final_fight_vs._Calvo

----

*Unofficial AP scorecard (after 14 completed rounds) 133-132 Sanchez
*After this bout promoter Don King announced the Salvador Sanchez v Juan LaPorte rematch for September 15th in Madison Square Garden.

Knockdowns: Nelson down once in the 7th; once in the 15th.

In a very entertaining fight with both fighters landing plenty of leather, Azumah Nelson puts on a very unexpected, entertaining slugfest. It is a war from the start with both fighters fighting at range but letting their fists fly. Nelson is hurt repeatedly with left hooks to the head, but Nelson is landing more round by round. At about 20 seconds into round 7, Sanchez momentarily broke through Nelson's rampage when, in ring center, a cleanly landed left hook caused the challenger to stumble backwards near the ropes. 10 seconds later, in the follow up barrage, Sanchez dropped Nelson with another clean, crushing left hook. Shortly after finishing Nelson's mandatory 8 count successfully returned to the way he was fighting before the knockdown. It was virtually a phone booth fight from there on with both fighters landing plenty of hard shots. With both fighters tired going into the 15th round, Sanchez comes out with his (like) 5th wind and hurts Nelson badly with a hard right and another devestating left hook and Nelson staggers badly just before falling into a corner. Nelson rises, still hurt, and Sanchez seizes the opportunity. He goes right after him, lands a couple more serious blows and Nelson staggers more just before the referee jumps in to call a halt at the 1:47 mark of the fifteenth and final round. Sanchez showed his greatness by stopping a young and aggressive Azumah Nelson, even though Sanchez was going to win on the scorecards.

Sanchez dies shortly after this fight in an automobile accident on August 12th, 1982. In his career, he beat two future Hall-of-Famers: Wilfredo Gomez, and Azumah Nelson. He took on great opposition in beating Danny Lopez (twice), Juan Laporte (who gave Julio Cesar Chavez many problems), Ruben Castillo, Patrick Ford, and Roberto Castanon. He was a great fighter, an even better champion, and a very devestating puncher. It is good to remember Salvador "Chava" Sanchez for what he did do, even if he could've done a lot more.

Post fight comments

* "He was a very strong fighter with a lot of heart. He came to take my title. I wanted to finish him off earlier but he was too strong." -Salvador Sanchez

* "If Azumah had had a few more fights he would have won. Next time you'll see a different Azumah Nelson." -John Kermah, Nelson's manager

* "He's (Sanchez) already signed to fight Arguello. Arguello has also signed but he's doing what he always does, reneging on contracts." -Promoter Don King, on a proposed Arguello v Sanchez jr. lightweight title bout.

*Salido badly hurt Roman with a right hand in the first round, but Roman, came back to knock Salido down three times. Roman dropped Salido in the fourth round with a right hand on the chin and in the eighth round with a left hook, and when he went down yet again under a hail of punches in the ninth round, referee Robert Byrd waved off the fight at 1 minute, 43 seconds.
*Salido announced his retirement after the fight, only to come out of retirement a few days later. However, as of August, 21, 2019, it appears that at some point after rescinding on his post-fight in-ring decision to retire from his career as a professional boxer, it seems Salido has chosen to quietly re-retire as he's not fought again since losing to Roman. His boxrec profile currently lists him as inactive https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/43998
