The fight of the night went to middleweights Larry Parks, 156.5, of Atlantic City, NJ, and Chris Hall, 158, of Philadelphia. Parks, 3-3, took a four round split decision over Hall, 0-1, who was making his pro debut. The bout could have been fought in a phone booth, as the two fighters stood toe to toe firing nonstop punches to each other's body for nearly every minute of every round. Some shots strayed low in this prototypical Philly war, but referee Battle let them go at it, before finally deducting a point from Hall in the 4th round. The point deduction did not play a factor in the result, as the scores varied widely. The bout was difficult to score, as Parks landed more punches, but Hall landed the harder shots. Final scores were 39-36 (twice) for Parks and 39-36 for Hall. Fightnews favored Hall by 38-37. Both men are to be commended for their game efforts.

The knockout of the night goes to Tyrone Winckler, 154, of Philadelphia, when he scored a one punch KO of Baltimore, MD's "Diamond" Matt Hill, 147.5, at 2:58 of the 4th round of what was called a welterweight bout, in spite of the weight differential. Hill came out charging, as is his trademark, throwing bombs with all of his weight behind them. He nailed the southpaw Winckler with a left hook, dropping him in the opening round. Winckler survived, but lost the 2nd round as Hill resumed his swarming attack, but Winckler started timing Hill's rushes with left hands to the body followed by right hands to the head. The pattern continued in the 3rd. Winckler landed several hard lefts, while Hill went to his body with right hands. Hill continued to pressure Winckler in the 4th round, forcing him to the ropes and working his body. During one of these sequences, Winckler exploded a right hand counter on Hill's chin that dropped him in his tracks. A game Hill tried to rise, but was in no condi
tion to continue. Winckler improves to 10-7, with 5 KO's, and Hill drops to 4-16-1, with 3 KO's.

Darroll "Doin' Damage" Wilson, 221, of Vineland, NJ, ended the comeback, and in all likelihood, the career, of former heavyweight and cruiserweight contender "Smokin" Bert Cooper last night at a nearly-packed Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, PA. Wilson, 27-6-2, 21 KO's, survived Cooper's best shots in the opening round, before flooring him in the 3rd round and convincing Cooper to remain on his stool after the 4th round of the scheduled 10 round heavyweight bout.

Cooper, of Darby Township, PA, weighed in at a portly 243.5 pounds, 13 pounds heavier than he was in his last bout just 3 months ago, when he took a unanimous decision over Craig Tomlinson in Reading, PA. Wilson, a slow starter, opened the bout as he did back on March 15, 1996 when he starched then 25-0 Shannon Briggs in the 3rd round, by languishing on the ropes, seemingly to test the power of his opponent. Cooper obliged him by landing a crisp right hand, followed by his vaunted left hook which staggered Wilson. Cooper patiently followed up, and nearly ended matters right there in the first round. Wilson held on, however, and survived.

Wilson remained in a defensive posture for much of the second round, landing an occasional jab and right hand to keep Cooper off. Cooper, for his part, landed some nice hard jabs and right hands, plus a nice hook to Wilson's body in what was a fairly even round.

The turning point in the bout came in the 3rd round. Wilson, still fighting off the ropes and allowing Cooper to dictate the pace, landed a stray left hand below the belt. Cooper, who appeared to be adjusting his cup before every round, turned away holding his groin. Referee Rudy Battle allowed Cooper a brief rest period of about one minute. The rest seemed to benefit Wilson more than Cooper. Wilson immediately woke up and attacked Cooper, hurting him with a right hand. Wilson followed up with a hard left-right, and another short right that dropped Cooper hard along the ropes. Cooper, obviously stunned, rose at 8, but was peppered for the rest of the round by hard one-two combinations from Wilson, which penetrated Cooper's Archie Moore "crab" defense.

Cooper's corner used an Enswell on his rapidly swelling left eye between the 3rd and 4th rounds. With Wilson adding hard body shots to his assault, Cooper's offense was reduced to a surprisingly stiff jab and wild left hooks and overhand rights, which Wilson easily slipped. Rather than go out on his shield, Cooper remained on his stool after the 4th round, dropping his record to 36-23, with 30 KO's. Wilson, 36, thought to be a shot fighter after a series of losses, most recently to "Terrible" Tim Witherspoon, looked hard at 221 pounds in his role as a spoiler.

Chambers, who won every round, cut Colbert under his left eye and bloodied his mouth, but could not drop him despite landing numerous power shots. Referee Ron Aurit called the doctor in to look at Colbert's cut. He let the fight continue briefly, but called a halt shortly thereafter with Colbert soaking up heavy punishment. Chambers moves to 11-0, with 6 KO's, and Colbert falls to 5-26, with 3 KO's.

Albert had not seen Colin fight, but he knew he was an "in-your-face" fighter. His manager Roger Larivee researched his opponents well before a fight.
