When creating a fight page, remember to add the "fight code" at the very top of the page.
The fight code is the fight number (which you can see at the top of any fight page) contained within "fight" code tags, like this: <nowiki><fight>12345</fight></nowiki><br>

'''Rocky Marciano''' was born Rocco Francis Marchegiano on September 1, 1923 in Brockton, Massachusetts. Marciano was [[World Heavyweight Champion]] from 1952 to 1956, and he is the only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated.

Marciano was the first of six children born to Perrino and Pasqualena Marchegiano. Before dropping out of high school to make a few bucks -- as a gardener, delivery boy, laborer for the gas company, and leather tanner at the shoe factory where his father worked -- he starred in football and baseball. In 1947, Marciano had a tryout with the Chicago Cubs as a catcher, but was let go because he couldn't make the throw from home plate to second base with accuracy.

Marciano didn't take up boxing until after he was drafted into the Army in 1943. He took up the sport mainly as a way to avoid KP duty (assisting the cooks) and other less desirable activities, but he showed a natural ability and fought as an amateur following his discharge in 1946.

After being discharged, Marciano visited an old Army buddy, Joe Sarelli, in Chicago. Sarelli's father, who was connected to the fight game, agreed to assess Marciano's potential as a fighter. "His father took me to a gym in Chicago's Loop," Marciano recalled. "For three days, I hit the big bag and the little bag. I skipped rope and shadow boxed. At the end of the workouts, Joe's father sat down with me. He told me, 'Rocky, why don't you go home and forget about being a fighter. You'll too small to be a heavyweight. You'll never make it.'"

Marciano turned professional on March 17, 1947 with a third-round knockout of Lee Epperson. He then returned to the amateurs. On March 1, 1948, at the [[New York Golden Gloves]] Tournament of Champions, he was on the short end of a disputed unpopular [[Split decision|split decision]] to [[Coley Wallace]] in what would be the last loss of his boxing career. In his last amateur fight, Marciano outpointed George McInnis to win the New England AAU Heavyweight Championship on March 22, 1948. Marciano did not move on to the nationals because of a fractured thumb. He finished his amateur career with a record of 9-4[http://encyclopediasupreme.org/rockymarcianoamateur94][http://www.esnewsreporting.com/boxingamateur].

Marciano won his first sixteen professional fights by knockout, but there were those who still didn't think much would become of him. [[Goody Petronelli]], trainer of [[Marvin Hagler]], caught one of Marciano's early fights and recalled for ''Sports Illustrated'', "I never thought he'd make it. He was too old, almost 25. He was too short, he was too light. He had no reach. Rough and tough, but no finesse."

When the esteemed [[Charley Goldman]], who would become Marciano's trainer, first saw Rocky, he explained to his assistant, [[Angelo Dundee]], that although Marciano lacked height and finesse, he had great punching power. Dundee said, "Charley taught the technique that if you are short, you make yourself smaller. Charley let him bend his knees to a deep knee squat. He was able to punch from that position, come straight up from the bag and hit a heck of a shot ... It was just bang-bang-bang-bang-BANG and get him outta there."

On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Joe Louis|October 26, 1951]], with 37 wins and 32 knockouts under his belt, Marciano faced former heavyweight champion [[Joe Louis]] and knocked him out in the eighth round. Louis was his boyhood idol, and Marciano cried in Louis' dressing room after the fight.

Five fights later, on [[Jersey Joe Walcott vs. Rocky Marciano (1st meeting)|September 23, 1952]], Marciano got a shot at world heavyweight champion [[Jersey Joe Walcott]]. In the thirteenth round, behind on points, Marciano knocked Walcott out with a short right to the jaw to win the championship.

Marciano's first title defense was a rematch with Walcott. On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Jersey Joe Walcott (2nd meeting)|May 15, 1953]], Marciano knocked Walcott out in the first round. Later that year, he made his second defense, [[Rocky Marciano vs. Roland LaStarza (2nd meeting)|knocking out]] [[Roland LaStarza]] in eleven rounds.

On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Ezzard Charles (1st meeting)|June 17, 1954]], Marciano defeated [[Ezzard Charles]] by a unanimous decision in a tough fight. Three months later, in their [[Rocky Marciano vs. Ezzard Charles (2nd meeting)|rematch]], Marciano almost lost his title. In the sixth round, Charles cut Marciano's nose so badly his corner couldn't stop the bleeding. With the ring doctor watching the cut closely and considering stopping the fight, Marciano came on strong in the eighth round and knocked Charles out.

Marciano defended his title against [[Don Cockell]] on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Don Cockell|May 16, 1955]], knocking him out in nine rounds. His sixth title defense was against [[Archie Moore]] on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Archie Moore|September 21, 1955]]. Marciano was dropped in the second round, but came back to knock Moore out in the ninth round.

On April 27, 1956, Marciano retired from boxing at the age of 31. "I thought it was a mistake when Joe Louis tried a comeback," ''The New York Times'' quoted him as saying. "No man can say what he will do in the future, but barring poverty, the ring has seen the last of me. I am comfortably fixed, and I am not afraid of the future." He said he wanted to spend more time with his family.

On August 31, 1969, the day before his 46th birthday, Marciano died in a private-plane crash near Des Moines, Iowa. He was survived by his wife of 19 years, Barbara, and their two children, Rocco Kevin and Mary Anne.
Thank you so much for adding the info on Harry Smith! I was mainly looking to substantiate the change I've made, as BoxRec had Jim Pettaway incorrectly listed as the 1956 AAU champ. I just added a few more facts to Harry's profile; I have results of his other bouts but this should probably be sufficient for a quick overview. He also won multiple Interservice Championships and boxed at the 1950 and 1951 AAU Championships (lost in the semis and preliminaries, respectively), for example, but I don't want to go overboard here. :)
This was the first New York Tournament of Champions, when participants came from across the Eastern seaboard. Unfortunately, I do not have results of Buffalo eliminations, so I did not include Harry's Buffalo title. I think you should remove your today's changes.
Bert, we are miscommunicating. In 1937 and 1938, regional GG tournaments took place, and then local champions entered the combined NY tournament. I feel that it is very confusing that you list two New York titles for winners of these tournaments.

For example, Sal Bartolo won the 1937 New England Golden Gloves (outpointed Desmarais in the finals), then entered the 1937 Tournament of Champions and won it as well. His regional title is not listed, but he has 2 New York titles, as if he first won the NY Metro title, and then won the tourney of champions. There was just one New York tournament, so I feel that only one title should be listed. The same applies to Buffalo Golden Gloves champions, etc.
Right now you are calling the same tournament by two different names. They won the Tournament of Champions, not the local Golden Gloves for NY Metro. 1937 was the first year when the Tournament of Champions took place.

== 1937 Golden Gloves -- Response to Your Message ==

== 1937 Golden Gloves ==

"Totaly disagree. The NY City and Chicago City Tournaments were first, even out drew the others at times (1944)." Bert

Bert, we are really miscommunicating. For example, for Sal Bartolo you have two lines:

1937 won New York (City) Golden Gloves in the bantamweight division.
1937 won New York Golden Gloves Tournament Of Champions in the bantamweight division.

This was one and the same tournament!! Why do you give it two separate lines?

== Joe Smallwood ==

I think his hometown (Wilimington, right?) has already been changed. (See [http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=030120&cat=boxer here].) I don't know whether the recent software changes require that we wait 24 hours for the change to register. --[[User:Ric|Ric]] 21:04, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, Thanks, Bert
So what's going on with the [[Joe Smallwood]] page? And why did you delete the photo? --[[User:Ric|Ric]] 16:43, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
==Succession boxes representing amateur titles==
Rocky Lockridge & Jose Torres why did you remove them? [[User:Bert|Bert]]

I think the convention is that succession boxes should only be created for major professional world titles. For instance, boxes on IBO world titles and ''The Ring'' awards have been removed from boxer pages. The same should apply to amateur accomplishments.

Of course, you could start a discussion on this on an appropriate talk page or ask JohnShep how to handle this. There's even been an exchange on the issue [[Talk:Norvel Lee|on this page]].--[[User:Emaster|Emaster]] 16:09, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

I started a discussion [[Help talk:Contents#Content of boxer/fight pages|on this page]], suggesting to keep the succession boxes on the pages.--[[User:Emaster|Emaster]] 21:27, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
Bravo! --[[User:Bert|Bert]]<br>

Couldn't all the Golden Gloves winners from bouts that were were held in Chicago IL be combined, weather Tribune sponsored or held under other sponsors names ?
Maybe just listed as Chicago Golden Gloves? The main thing is that there is a list of Golden Glove Champions from the tournaments.
Plenty of people walking around claiming to be GG Champs that have never even been to a live boxing event.
Also, I started this Category and put it together by trial & error, need assistance starting a Category for - Wisconsin Golden Gloves. thanks.
please post what you are doing here http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=114569 and hopefully we will get this sorted out soon :-)
Bert, the page you made for Norman was a New Page when he already had a page. I entered the text in THAT Wike
I assume that is was you wanted done? Red
Bert, you didn't mention what weight class Kolb won his amateur titles in.--[[User:Matt Tegen|Matt Tegen]] 00:27, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
== Title boxes ==
Bert, can you put the title boxes as the bottom of the article below the body of text, but above the categories. This is how a lot of the earlier articles were handled, and is similar to what Wikipedia does with politicians, for example. I think it looks much better as well.--[[User:Matt|Matt]] 03:17, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
==Bob Baker changes needed==
http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Bob_Baker where it says lost to colley wallace, it must say lost very close controversial decision.
http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Tommy_Jackson_vs._Bob_Baker_%281st_meeting%29 <br>
Archie Moore was returned to the rankings as light heavyweight champion by the NBA, however The Ring magazine still considered him the light heavyweight champion. <BR>
this is wrong, it should say ring magazine still considered more heavyweight #1 contender!
