COLOGNE, Germany -- Vladimir Klitschko beat up Axel Schulz for eight one-sided rounds Saturday night to gain the vacant European heavyweight championship.

The 6-foot-6 Ukrainian dealt Schulz fierce punishment throughout the fight and had the German dangling helplessly on the ropes when the bout was stopped with 18 seconds left in the eighth round.

Klitschko, the 1996 Olympic super heavyweight champion, caught Schulz with a straight left earlier in the eighth, sending him to the canvas for the first time in his career.

Klitschko's record improved to 29-1 with 27 knockouts.

Schulz, whose record dropped to 26-4-1 with one no-contest, didn't win a round and he didn't protest at having the fight stopped.

"It didn't make any sense anymore," Schulz said. "He had already hit me hard the last couple of rounds."

The 30-year-old Schulz had turned in credible performances in losing title bouts to George Foreman, Michael Moorer and Frans Botha.

But the 23-year-old Klitschko, the younger brother of WBO champion Vitali Klitschko, dissected Schulz from the opening seconds of the fight with a left jab that visibly snapped his head back.

A game Schulz, who took one shot after another, had the 18,500 spectators roaring by coming back slugging every time the taller Klitschko sent him into the ropes with hard combinations.

Klitschko, however, was so dominant the only drama was to see how much punishment Schulz could absorb or if he would be seriously hurt.

BERLIN, Germany -- Wladimir Klitschko refused to let the rematch with Chris Byrd go the distance.

The Ukrainian stopped Chris Byrd in the seventh round of a one-sided fight Saturday to gain the IBF heavyweight title.

Klitschko's right hook finished off the American 41 seconds into the round, the second time Byrd was floored in the fight.

The rematch was similar to their first encounter in October 2000. Byrd also lost that bout, although he survived two knockdowns on his way to losing a decision.

This time around Klitschko -- executing trainer Emanuel Steward's strategy flawlessly -- finished off Byrd early. It began in the third round when Byrd, dropping his hands for a second, took a pair of hard left-right combinations from the 6-foot-6 Klitschko that shook him up.

"It was like a musician playing notes," Klitschko said. "Everything we trained worked."

After the fight, Klitschko first went to speak to his beaten rival, then to Byrd's trainer and father, Joe.

"He should be proud -- I have never seen anybody take that much punishment and come back," Klitschko said. "They are a great family."

In the fifth round, Byrd climbed to his feet after being knocked down then withstood a barrage of shots. He took a beating for more than a minute as 14,500 spectators roared until Klitschko backed off. Byrd waved his gloves at Klitschko, telling his opponent to come at him.

"He's a fighter with a big, big heart," Klitschko said. "But he provoked me."

The 35-year Byrd had made four successful defenses of the belt he won from Evander Holyfield in 2002. He was the longest reigning of the four heavyweight champions.

"I never hit him, not the way he hit me," Byrd said. "I was just so pumped up for the fight, it got the better of me. If I had to do it again I would go in there with a different strategy, but Wladimir will be hard to beat. He is very talented for a big man."

Byrd said he will have to decide if he wants to continue his career. He was taken to the hospital after the post-fight news conference for X-rays on his swollen face.

"I will talk to the wife," he said. "I enjoy this a lot, of course not when you're pounded like that."

Klitschko (46-3, 41 KOs) has now resurrected his career. After being knocked out by Corrie Sanders and Lamon Brewster, he started his comeback by beating favored Nigerian Samuel Peter in October.

"It is very important to know both sides," said Klitschko, 30.

"I enjoyed a lot of success in my early years, then come the tough years."

Byrd acknowledged that Steward, who has trained more than 30 world champions, put together a smart plan for Klitschko. During the first fight the Ukrainian used his six-inch height advantage and jabbed from outside until Byrd's eye swelled shut.

Since then, the 6-foot Byrd has beaten some big men such as Andrew Golota and Jameel McCline, and Steward this time around had Klitschko use his left arm to keep Byrd off balance.

"Byrd didn't fight Wladimir, he fought his left arm. He never saw the rights coming," Steward said.

Klitschko became the third fighter from the former Soviet Union to win a heavyweight title in four months. Russian Nikolai Valuev took John Ruiz's WBA belt and Sergei Liakhovich of Belarus won Brewster's WBO crown. That leaves Hasim Rahman as the only American champion.

"I don't care where people come from. It is not important to me. If you are good people will like you, if you are not, they won't. It is simple," Klitschko said.
Bout Summary
Wilder retained his WBC World Heavyweight title on a split decision draw, marking the first time both the 40-0 Wilder and the 27-0 Tyson Fury did not win. Maintaining a consistent herky jerky style with nonstop feinting and continuous foot movement, the bigger and taller Fury had reach advantage and ultimately proved hard to hit, and appeared to win rounds three through eight, with other rounds somewhat closer. Wilder bloodied Fury's nose with jabs in the fourth round. Referee Jack Reiss had only to deal with occasional holding by Fury whenever Wilder tried to get inside. Wilder missed punches when his reach fell short, but he did drop Fury about a minute in the ninth round from what appeared to be a short glancing right hand to the left ear. Fury beat the count, and Wilder could not land another big shot despite his 10-8 round. Instead, Fury landed hard rights in the the remainder of the ninth round and early in the tenth round. At times, Fury showboated, putting his hands behind his back, and sticking out his tongue, but Wilder remain composed and focused. A solid right-left combination from Wilder floored Fury onto his back in the twelfth and final round, who looked out but somehow got up and beat the count yet again, and finished the bout.

Ringside commentator Paul Malignaggi felt Fury won the bout, and stated judge Alejandro Rochin's 115-111 scorecard was wrong. Fury was graceful and grateful after the bout, embracing Wilder warmly, thanking Wilder for the opportunity and stating "God Bless America", and making chicken gestures in reference to the other heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua still not fighting either himself nor Wilder. Ringside commentator and boxing historian Steve Farhood had it 115-111 for Fury. Not everyone agreed.

Fury held the lineal heavyweight title coming into this bout, having taken two and a half years off to seek treatment for alcoholism, cocaine addiction, and depression, and had to come down from almost 400 pounds to 256 under the guidance of trainer Ben Davison. Freddie Roach and Ricky Hatton were also in his corner. Trainer Mark Breland was in Wilder's corner. This was not the first time two undefeated heavyweight champions had met in a heavyweight titular contest. 26-0 Smokin' Joe Frazier dropped the then 31-0 Muhammad Ali in round 15 and went on to retain the overall world heavyweight title and add the linear world heavyweight title at Madison Square Garden in 1971.

Both Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, in the post fight commentary, entertained the possibility of a USA Showtime rematch in the future. Wilder had a mandatory rematch clause in his contract if he had lost the bout. USA Showtime broadcast the four main event bouts on the eleven bout card, including heavyweight Luis Ortiz' tenth round stoppage of Travis Kauffman in a scheduled 10 rounder. Wilder's younger brother, 2-0 cruiserweight Marsellos Wilder, opened the card with a four round unanimous decision over David Damore. Former heavyweight contender Chris Arreola and 2016 Olympic Games Super Heavyweight Silver Medalist Joe Joyce both won on the untelevised portion of the card. Boxers in attendance at ringside included Evander Holyfield, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Riddick Bowe.
*Tyson Fury, following in the steps of Lennox Lewis, brought the unified World Heavyweight Championship back to the United Kingdom with a 12 round unanimous decision over Wladimir Klitschko. At 26 years of age and standing 6'9" to Klitschko's 39 years of age and 6'6", Fury became the first fighter ever to legitimately outpoint Klitschko, dealing him his first loss in eleven years. The bout was marked by frequent clinches but not much punching. Despite being in center ring, Klitschko landed only 52 punches all night, for an average of 4.5 punches a round and only four body shots the whole night. Pawing with his jab using an 85 inch reach advantage, Fury waited for the cautious Klitschko to counter. However, with a shorter 81 inch reach, Klitschko couldn't, and wound up with a cut beneath his left eye trying to get inside, apparently from an accidental butt after a clinch in the fifth round. It was rounds into the bout before Klitschko could land a punch at all. Klitschko tried to throw punches in round 12 and won it, his best round of the bout. Nothing hurt Fury, however. Fury landed 86 punches, of which 48 were crisp power shots, many of them to the head, which proved to be the difference on the judge's scorecards. Klitschko stated he wanted a rematch.
