Spinks is the son of former World Heavyweight Champion Leon Spinks, and nephew of two-time world champion Michael Spinks. He is a former amateur star who was a welterweight champ at the National Golden Gloves and Police Athletic League National tourney in 1997, just a few weeks before turning pro. Spinks won the IBF title on March 22, 2003 when he defeated Michele Piccirillo by unanimous decision in Campione D'Italia, Italy. (Piccirillo had beaten Spinks a year prior.)

On December 13, 2003, Spinks became undisputed welterweight champion when he defeated WBC and WBA titlist Ricardo Mayorga by majority decision.

Spinks made the first defense of his titles on April 10, 2004 when he defeated former light welterweight champion Zab Judah by a unanimous decision. Both Spinks and Judah were knocked down in the later rounds in that fight.

On September 4, 2004, Spinks made the second defense of his titles against Miguel Angel Gonzalez, winning that fight by unanimous decision.

On February 5, 2005, in his hometown of St. Louis, Spinks lost his titles in a rematch with Judah, by way of a 9th round TKO.

On July 8, 2006 after 519 days away from the ring, Spinks won a majority decision to capture the IBF junior middleweight crown from Roman Karmazin in his hometown of St. Louis, MO. He made his first defense to Rodney Jones with an easy unanimous decision. Then Spinks faced Jermain Taylor for his WBC and WBO middleweight titles but lost by split decision.
Comment(s):
- Maske returns to the ring after an 10 year layoff.
- This was a rematch of Maske and Hill's IBF and WBA Light Heavyweight unification title bout in 1996, which Maske lost.
- The fight was staged at a contracted catchweight of 190 lbs.
- Hill suffered a cut in the 8th round due to an accidental headbutt, so the referee deducted one point from Maske because he was not hurt. With blood streaming into Hill's left eye, Maske was able to connect more often with his right jab and win the later rounds.
- Hill is required by the WBA to fight interim titlist Firat Arslan in a rematch immediately after this fight but is expected to retire.
