Johnny Ray was an outstanding boxer who was never stopped in 138 bouts (86-87 RRB). His record including newspaper decisions:

KO- 15
WD- 68
Tot 138

Career: 1913-1924

Ray's record was compiled by Luckett Davis from a search of the Pittsburgh Post and first appeared in the 1986-87 RING RECORD BOOK. In 138 fights he was never stopped. His best victories were over Johnny Dundee, George (KO) Chaney, and hometown rivals Patsy Brannigan and Ray Pryel. He fought another hometown rival, Johnny Kirk, six times, and their last meeting ended in a general fracas after Ray was disqualified for fouling.

Previously listed in Ray's record, but now dropped, was the alleged fight of March 16, 1914 with Al Schreiber. This entry was listed in Ray's published record in the Pittsburgh Post, December 2, 1917, supposedly occurring in Columbus, Ohio. However the full results of that program are now known, and Ray did not appear on it.

After his retirement, Ray managed boxers. By far his most famous protege was Billy Conn. Brother of baseball player
and long-time Brooklyn Dodger coach Jake Pitler who is a member of the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

Al Quaill was a rugged Irishman from Pittsburgh's Brookline neighborhood. He began his pro career in 1934, and often sparred with Teddy Yarosz and later Billy Conn. He quit boxing in 1939, at age 25, due to eye troubles. He then opned a gym on the Southside, where he trained a successful team of amateurs. He later became a local police officer.

Quaill died in 1967 at age 53 due to a cardiac condition.

In addition to the fights listed in the linked record, Thomas probably also had the following:
*1935: W tko, Kid Franklin (probably March); W tko, Frankie Moses (probably April); W tko, Tiger Clark (probably April or May); W Points, Eddie Kid Brown (probably May); W Points, Eddie Kid Brown(May or June). Presumably all of these fights occurred in New Orleans, and are mentioned in The Ring, June 1935, page 56, July 1935, page 62, and August 1935, page 55.

*1938: Nov. 25, Jackie Carter, Belize (British Honduras), W Pts 10; Pal Silver, Belize, L Pts 10; George Dixon, Belize, W Pts 10; Dec. 16, Pal Silver, Belize, L tko 6. The first two of these four fights is mentioned in The Ring, February 1939, page 58. The Dixon and second Silver fights are mentioned in The Ring, March 1939, page 51. Although it is not certain that the Jimmy Thomas who had these fights is the same as the Pittsburgh fighter, it appears likely that they are identical.
According to the U.S. Census database on the Ancestry.com website, one James Thomas, a black 18-year-old native of Georgia, was a "roomer" who was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during 1930. He was
listed as a "Pugilist" who worked on an "Own Business" basis.
