As an amateur, twice beat [[Larry Holmes]] by knockout; once in a Golden Gloves national event in the 3rd round, and later that year in 1972 at the Olympic trials with a first round knockout. Nick had an oppurtunity to be trained by Lou Duva, but ended up going with a local promoter [[Winky Groom]] which was Nicks demise.Groom was an awful manager and would not manage this potential Heavy Weight title contender to his full potential.Nick Wells was one of the greatest heavyweight amateurs to ever step into the ring. His amateur record was 189-18 110kos 72kos in rd1.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

Wells ended up being a mediocre pro, who was a single parent trying to raise his son Nickolas and trying to fight for money. He chose to be a fireman at the Fort Worth Fire Department, where he has been employed for the last 25 years. Nick has a wife Denise, son Nickolas, daughter Hayley, daughter in law Elizabeth, and grandsons Koltyn, Caden, and Braxon Wells.His amateur career record was 189-18 110kos 72kos in rd1.&lt;br /&gt;
