Pavlik came out very active in the first round, doubling up with the jab and left hands to the head and body. In the final minute, Pavlik landed two huge right hands that stunned Rubio and drove him back to the ropes. In the second round, Rubio appeared to be very defensive of Pavlik's power, as Pavlik continued to move forward with power shots. Rubio began to throw more punches in the third round, but Pavlik would drill him back with the jab and right hands. The left eye of Pavlik began to swell up after a Rubio right hand. Pavlik fired back with combinations to the head and body. They traded some punches in the fourth round, but Pavlik's shots were much harder and forced Rubio to retreat. The fifth round was a blowout with Pavlik beating Rubio around from post to post. In the sixth round, Rubio tried to stage a rally and actually began to trade punches with Pavlik. Rubio continued to stand his ground in the seventh round, as Pavlik was pounding him with much harder and much better shots. Rubio tried to counter and punch, but was never able to get off with too many shots. During the eight round, Pavlik stunned Rubio badly with a right hand and the two of the them would trade big shots against the ropes for the final thirty seconds. Pavlik continued to let his hands go in the ninth round, picking his shots and punishing Rubio. The ninth round was another dominant round for Pavlik as landed numerous punches on Rubio. Before the start of the tenth round, Rubio's corner stopped the fight.
Oscar De La Hoya versus Manny Pacquiao, also billed as The Dream Match, was a professional boxing welterweight superfight. The bout took place on December 6th, 2008 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. Pacquiao defeated De La Hoya via technical knockout when a ringside physician deemed De La Hoya physically unable to fight before the ninth round. The card was a co-production of Bob Arum's Top Rank Boxing and De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions and was aired live on pay-per-view (PPV) on HBO PPV.

Despite no title belts being disputed, the bout received a lot of publicity since the two boxers were decorated, with Pacquiao being the current number one pound for pound boxer in the world as judged by The Ring, and a five-time world champion in four weight divisions (Pacquiao is the reigning WBC lightweight champion at the time of the bout). Meanwhile, De La Hoya who was an Olympic gold medalist and past holder of 10 world titles in eight weight divisions.

Pacquiao had to step up to two weight divisions (from lightweight), and De La Hoya had to go down two weight divisions (from middleweight), to be eligible for the bout's welterweight division.

Idea of the bout
The idea of having De La Hoya and Pacquiao fight came from HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant talking with ESPN boxing analyst Dan Rafael. Larry then presented the idea to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum. Bob presented the idea to Manny Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach.

Buildup
After De La Hoya's May 5th loss to Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in 2007(see De La Hoya-Mayweather boxing match), De La Hoya decided to close out his career with three fights in 2008. The first would be a tune-up bout in May before finishing with two mega bouts in September and December respectively. De La Hoya defeated Stevie Forbes in the May tune-up bout in preparation for Mayweather. Due to Mayweather's unexpected retirement however, Ricky Hatton was the new potential candidate to fight De La Hoya on September 20th. However, Hatton rejected the offer because he felt the scheduled date was too close to his last bout. He decided to pass on a fight in September to set the stage for a showdown against either Manny Pacquiao or Miguel Cotto. It was announced that De La Hoya and Pound For Pound superstar Manny Pacquiao had agreed to fight December 6, 2008 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the fight would be at the welterweight limit of 147 lbs. On August 28, 2008 a teleconference was held by Golden Boy Promotions to officially announce the fight.

Pre-fight hype
Presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, Inc., the bout was scheduled as a 12-round, non-title fight contested at the 147-pound welterweight limit. Although Pacquiao went into the fight recognized as the leading pound-for-pound boxer in the world, some boxing pundits have speculated that 147 pounds could be too far above his natural weight against the larger De La Hoya.
Many boxing analysts believed the fight would favor Oscar. Boxing analysts stated that Oscar's size, reach, experience, and good chin made Manny the underdog in this mega fight. Training for the fight Oscar hired trainers Angelo Dundee, Nacho Beristain, and young boxing talent Edwin Valero. Oscar told the news that his team is unbeatable, while Freddie Roach said, "No one is going to be able to help Oscar pull the trigger when he faces Manny Pacquiao on Dec. 6".

Tickets reportedly sold out just hours after they went on sale. The total gate revenues were said to be nearly $17 million dollars. That amount apparently gave the bout the second-largest gate revenue in boxing history (after the De La Hoya-Mayweather Jr. fight in May 5, 2007 which generated $18.4 million in gate revenue).

The fight
Manny Pacquiao soundly defeated Oscar De La Hoya, surprising many pre-fight analysts who had predicted a victory by De La Hoya. The fight ended at the beginning of the 9th round after Oscar and his corner threw in the towel.

Rounds 1-4
On round 1, De La Hoya's opening punches missed Pacquiao; Pacquiao's own left straight then a combo connects. The boxers exchange punches, with Pacquiao's another straight left ending the round. At the start of the second round, a double jab by De La Hoya persuades Pacquiao to retreat. Only the second of De La Hoya's two combinations hits Pacquiao. A combo from Pacquiao leaves De La Hoya's face reddened. A flurry of punches from Pacquiao ends the round. The third round was more of the same as De La Hoya wasn't able to answer Pacquiao's combos.

Rounds 5-7
Pacquiao unleashes a flurry of punches in round 5; De La Hoya saw it but didn't react fast enough. De La Hoya himself lands a body shot and a couple of hooks, but the two boxers exchange punches at the end of the round. The next round began as the last ended, with the men exchanging jabs. Pacquiao appears winded as he missed a left hook, but the follow-up lands on target. Pacquiao lands a right, and a four-punch combo to end the round.

On round 7, Pacquiao lands a jab as De La Hoya misses his; Pacquiao unleashes another flurry of punches as De La Hoya's legs almost gave out, just as he ceased punching back. His uppercut misses Pacquiao as his opponent releases more jabs to end round 7.

Round 8 and aftermath
Pacquiao pursues De La Hoya's body but was warned by referee Tony Weeks to "keep them up" (keep punches above the belt). De La Hoya's right connects, but Pacquiao's combo pins De La Hoya in the corner. Another left by Pacquiao dazes the Mexican-American. Another combo wobbles De La Hoya. Pacquiao throws another combo as De La Hoya goes for the body. The Filipino unleashes a four-punch combo to end the round.

The fight is stopped before the start of the ninth round to award Pacquiao the victory.

Pacquiao was ahead on all three judges' scorecards before the stoppage, with two judges scoring the fight at 80-71 (Pacquiao won all rounds) and one scoring it at 79-72 (Pacquiao won 7 rounds and drew 1). After the bout trainer Freddy Roach stated, "We knew we had him after the first round. He had no legs, he was hesitant and he was shot." Confirming Roach's pre-fight predictions that he'd grown too old, De La Hoya crossed the ring to Pacquiao's corner after the bout was stopped and told Roach, "You're right Freddie. I don't have it anymore." When asked by reporters whether he would continue fighting, De La Hoya responded, "My heart still wants to fight, that's for sure," De La Hoya said. "But when your physical doesn't respond, what can you do? I have to be smart and make sure I think about my future plans."

Pavlik then followed up with a left uppercut, then a right uppercut and finished it with a left hook and a grazing right hand. Taylor fell down hard, slumped in a corner. == Bout Summary ==
The fight was close due to Griffin being busier in the ring and Sturm fighting out of character by choosing to slug rather than box in the early going. Sturm fought in spots and used his jab to neutralize Griffin's pressure. They fought at a high pace which took a toll on Sturm, who seemed to be tired down the stretch and began to box at a measured pace while keeping the fight in the middle of the ring.

Hatton was very aggressive early and controlled the tempo of the fight. Hatton had the upper-hand for the first few rounds, but Mayweather adjusted and started having success pot-shotting Hatton. Mayweather landed a right hand that opened a cut over Hatton's right eye in round three. Hatton had success in the first minute of round four as he continued to apply pressure, but Mayweather landed some clean shots that hurt Hatton as the round progressed. Hatton had a strong round five as he struck at Mayweather on the ropes, but Mayweather was able to use his forearms and elbows to frustrate Hatton's ability to score any clean shots. Mayweather's defensive ability prevented Hatton from scoring any power shots to the head or trademark hooks to the body. In the next round, referee Joe Cortez took a point from Hatton for hitting Mayweather on the back of the head. Mayweather had a big round eight landing many clean shots and continued to pull away by outboxing Hatton in the ninth round as Hatton began to wear down. Mayweather closed the show in round ten, starting when he caught Hatton coming in with a left hook that sent him crashing face first against the padding of the corner post before collapsing flat on his back and slamming hard into the canvas. Hatton got to his feet at the count of eight, and when he got up, Mayweather quickly came in and took advantage throwing in a couple of more shots to the face. At that moment, Joe Cortez called a halt to the action. Hatton, still dazed, took a step back and fell back down.

<fight>1272743</fight>

In a mild upset, Verno Phillips took the IBF Junior Middleweight title at age 38 from champion Cory Spinks, who lost his second straight split decision. In a highly competitive fight for all twelve rounds with many good exchanges in center ring, the southpaw Spinks was clearly the busier of the two fighters, landing many crisp right jabs and occasional lefts. Phillips counterpunched well though, landing many power shots on the inside that kept this fight extremely close. Spinks was more aggressive over the first six rounds, with Phillips coming on after that. Phillips best moment came near the end of round seven, when he landed a left right right that backed up Spinks. There was also some furious in fighting in a corner and on the ropes in round 8. The fight appeared even, and the crowd booed in the later rounds when it became a tight defensive war. Both fighters appeared in excellent shape in a drawish fight which appeared to be able to go either way.

In the history of the Light Middleweight division, going back to the initial title bouts of the WBC (1975), the WBA (1975), the IBF (1984) and the WBO (1988), Verno Phillips is the oldest fighter to both fight for and win a version of the World Junior Middleweight title. The oldest present or former World Junior Middleweight champion to win a bout in this weight class is former WBA-WBC champion Sandro Mazzinghi, who went undefeated in his last 25 bouts between 1966-1978, who won a ten round decision at age 39 over Jean-Claude Warusfel in Florence, Italy, in his last ring appearance in 1978. Mazzinghi is ranked # 1 all-time among Boxrec Junior Middleweights.

At ringside for this IBF Junior Middleweight title bout: former World Heavyweight Champion Michael Spinks; former World Heavyweight Champion Leon Spinks (now an assistant cornerman for his son); and current IBF World Cruiserweight Champion Steve Cunningham.

<fight>17920</fight>

In a bout which can be seen on youtube, Foster chased clever 35-0 counter puncher Quarry for three rounds, who counterjabbed and moved left and right and tied Foster up wherever possible. By the fourth round, though, the fast pace had Quarry with his mouth open and visibly tired. This left him up for Foster's left, which began to land more frequently. Foster landed a right cross followed by a left hook which dropped Quarry just before the bell sounded ending the fourth round at 3:00. Quarry was down on his back and out-and got counted out. Tense moment for Foster, who had great concern for the life of his unconscious opponent after this bout ended. Mike was the brother of popular world class heavyweight contender Irish Jerry Quarry.

MIKE QUARRY'S DECLINE AFTER THE FOSTER BOUT

Quarry, who went winless in five consecutive bouts from April to November in 1973, and won only four of the last twelve bouts of his career from 1976-1982, later admitted after the loss to Foster that "I was never the same fighter again." This included losing twice to future Light Heavyweight champion Mike Rossman (a fighter Mike had beaten previously) and future contenders Alvaro Yaqui Lopez and Pete McIntyre. In addition, after the Foster fight, Quarry lost all four of the international bouts he fought outside the United States: to Tom Bogs in Denmark; to Chris Finnegan in England; to Pierre Fourie in South Africa; and to Bunny Johnson in Australia. Seven years after the death of his brother Irish Jerry Quarry to pugilistic dementia, Mike also died of the same cause and was buried next to his brother in 2006. Of the three fighting Quarry brothers, only Bobby Quarry (who had a record of 9-12-2 as a heavyweight from 1982-1992) survives.

Rumors are made, that Pavlik might fight against John Duddy or Felix Trinidad. But Duddy suffured a cut in his recent bout against Walid Smitched, which may take too much time to heal. And Trinidad isn't ranked by the WBC and the WBO, due to not winning a fight since 2004.

In an exciting nationally televised bout, Arguello defended his world title against the Lightweight Champion of Texas, James 'Bubba' Busceme. In a bout that was surprisingly competitive, Arguello was reduced to counter punching against a defensive and skilled opponent. In a surprise, Busceme seemed to score with jab combinations as well as Arguello did, and the fight remain close until the sixth. This was a strategic, meticulous war.
In the sixth round, Arguello began scoring more often with right-left combinations, as well as countering well over Busceme's left with his right. With Busceme finally staggered on his feet by an Arguello right, and with Busceme's hands down, the referee stopped the fight. This was the first time since 1971-going back over sixty-five fights-that a bout Arguello was in ended in the sixth round. Arguello appeared overly cautious and curious with the unknown Busceme, who had won 15 of his last 16 and had knocked out many of his opponents. Arguello appeared to be fighting a number of rounds with the thought 'Be careful because I don't know anything about this guy' and-in scoring a masterful win-did not at any point take unneccessary chances with Busceme or underestimate the ability of his dangerous opponent.

Calzaghe was aggressive from the opening bell but both fighters were very accurate and sharp. Calzaghe had a very good round three as he used his speed to land straight lefts against Kessler. Kessler landed two good uppercuts in round four. Calzaghe started to take control in rounds five and six. In the seventh, Kessler had his best round since round four, landing several hard shots although Calzaghe threw over 100 punches. Kessler was very aggressive in the eighth, trying to turn the tide, but Calzaghe came on at the end of the round. Calzaghe continued to outbox Kessler in round nine. The fighters went toe-to-toe in a very exciting round ten, but Calzaghe seemed to have more in the tank. Calzaghe continued to blunt the desperate attacks from Kessler over the final two rounds to win in front of 50,000+ in attendance.
Andrade withstood an all-out assault by Kessler, refusing to fall despite being hit 348 times during the bout. Both fighters came out and traded bombs in a tremendous first round. Taylor dropped Pavlik in the second round with a hard right hand followed by a left hooks and a right hand when Pavlik dropped his hands. Pavlik was on unsteady legs briefly after that, but he still pursued the champion. The rounds that preceeded showed brutal exchanges with Pavlik beginning to get to the champion. Pavlik hurt Taylor in round seven with a hard right hand that staggered Taylor into a corner. Pavlik then followed up with a left uppercut, then a right uppercut and finished it with a left hook and a grazing right hand. Taylor fell down hard, slumped in a corner. Referee Steve Smoger jumped in almost immediately after Taylor was dropped, and stopped the fight.
*<b>Time:</b> 2:12
*<b>Weights:</b> Ali 206 lbs (93 kg); Liston 215 (98 kg)
*<b>Attendance:</b> 2,434 ( the smallest audience ever to see a modern world heavyweight championship bout)
*Knock-out punch is known as "anchor punch," as coined by Ali.

----
Because of the unexpected (if not controversial) ending of the first bout, boxing authorities ordered a second bout, this time with Cassius Clay (now Muhammad Ali) as the defending world champion and Liston as challenger. The bout was scheduled for November, 1964, but Ali needed emergency surgery for a strangulated hernia. The fight was postponed until the following May and rescheduled for a site in Boston, Massachusetts. However, since the promoters did not have a license in Massachusetts, the fight eventually was held in a small auditorium in Lewiston, Maine, the state's second largest city, on May 25, 1965. As a result of the remote location (140 miles north of Boston), only 2,434 fans were present, setting a [still] all-time record for the lowest attendance in a world championship fight.

This proved to be one of the most controversial fights in history. Midway through the first round, Liston fell to the canvas, in what many have argued was not a legitimate knockdown. Referee Jersey Joe Walcott, a former world heavyweight champion himself, seemed to be confused after he sent Ali to a neutral corner and the champion refused, instead standing over his fallen opponent and yelling at him to get up, then posing over him with his fists in the air celebrating the knockdown. Walcott took 20 seconds to figure out what to do, and by then Liston had gotten to his feet and resumed boxing. Nat Fleischer, publisher of The Ring, finally told Walcott that Liston had spent more than the requisite 10 seconds on the canvas, and Walcott stopped the fight — awarding Ali a first-round knockout.

The blow that ended the match became known as "the phantom punch" since most people at ringside did not see it. Many continue to claim that Liston had bet against himself and "took a dive" because he owed money to the mafia, and others believe that he feared for his safety from Nation of Islam extremists and just wanted to extricate himself from the entire situation. Slow motion replays show Ali connecting with a quick, chopping right to Liston's head as Liston was moving toward him, and show that Liston was unsteady when he finally got to his feet (Ali appeared to connect with four additional unanswered punches before Walcott belatedly declared the knockout and an end to the contest). However, it remains inconclusive to this day as to whether the blow was a legitimate knockout punch, so historians and analysts continue to argue the results of this rematch. In his book Ghosts of Manila, Mark Kram included an interview he held with Liston years after the fight. In the interview, Liston claimed to have taken a dive because of his fear of retaliation from the Nation of Islam, the Black Muslim sect that was managing Ali's career. This statement has never been substantiated, however.

Quotes
*"Get up and fight, Sucker!" -- Ali, after knocking Liston down (see picture above).

*"It was a good punch but I didn’t think I hit him so hard he couldn’t get up." -- Ali, after the fight.

*"Ali knocked me down with a sharp punch. I was down but not hurt. Ali is waiting to hit me, the ref can’t control him. I have to put one knee and one glove on the canvas to get up. You know Ali is a nut. You can tell what a normal man is going to do but you can’t tell what a nut is going to do and Ali is a nut." -- Liston, two years later.

However, it remains inconclusive to this day as to whether the blow was a legitimate knockout punch, so historians and analysts continue to argue the results of this rematch.[1] In his book Ghosts of Manila, Mark Kram included an interview he held with Liston years after the fight.
