A looping overhand right put Spinks on his backside in the final minute of the opening round. He was up quickly and action continued. Spinks held on for the remainder of the round at one point causing both men to fall to the canvas. Spinks received a warning for holding at the end of the round. Bundrage was warned for punching on the break in Round 2. By the end of Round 3, Spinks had developed some swelling to his right eye. An accidental clash of heads in Round 4 opened a small cut above the right eye of Bundrage. Spinks managed to outbox Bundrage for the next few rounds throwing solid punches and using angles, however a wide right hand sent Spinks down for the second time 20 seconds into Round 7. He got to his feet at the count of eight and action continued despite Spinks being on weak legs. Another right sent Spinks down at :50. He got to his feet at the count of nine.
