Garcia Once Again Victorious on “Friday Night Fights”

By Javier Cantu

This past Friday evening on ESPN 2’s popular “Friday Night Fights” series, Weslaco’s Roberto “La Amenaza” Garcia (36-3, 23 KO’s) maintained his unbeaten streak dating back to 2011 by putting in a workman-like effort over the tough and dangerous Breidis Prescott (27-6, 20 KO’s). The event, which took place at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, IL and marked Garcia’s third fight this year (all on “Friday Night Fights”) lived up to the hype of a tough and rugged matchup as both fighters finished with heavy swelling on their faces.

The fight started off slow for Garcia in the opening round as he looked slow and a bit rusty. Prescott began working behind his jab and working to the body all the while moving around the small ring, becoming a hard target for Garcia. The 2nd round provided more of the same, only Prescott began to open up his offensive arsenal a bit more, unleashing hooks and right crosses after his piston jab. This writer scored the first two rounds for Prescott based off Prescott activity and jab use.

The 3rd stanza would be a game changer for Garcia. The stalking and pressure which “Amenaza” is known for started to show up. Prescott continued to score with the jab and some body work, but Garcia’s punches started to be put together. A left hook to the head followed by the same to the body showed the edge in power to Garcia, and the round belonged to him based on landing the harder punches. Prescott would continue with his game plan of sticking and moving but to no great success.

The 4th and 5th rounds provided more of the same action as Garcia preyed and found Prescott often against the ropes. Doubling up with left-hooks to the head and to the body began to expose Prescott to Garcia’s straight right hand. Garcia had fully warmed up and was now winning every round since the 3rd.

In the 6th round, Garcia’s pressure and power punching clearly began to show on Prescott’s face as the Colombian began to show swelling around the eyes from those left-hook and straight right combos to the head. Garcia himself did not go unscathed as a mouse developed under his right eye, surely a product of the Prescott piston jab he pumped throughout the night. Garcia’s right jaw area also showed swelling.

In the 7th round a war erupted in the ring as Prescott’s ability to stick and move had been diminished and he began to stand and trade with the Reynosa-born fighter. A big overhand-right and left-hook combination landed on the tough Colombian, and Garcia’s straight rights kept finding their target as he continued to sweep the middle rounds of the fight with power shots. The same rhythm would continue into the 8th round as Garcia clearly was starting to pull away.

Possibly overconfident with the way the fight was going, Garcia walked right into a flush jab – straight right combo early in the 9th round which put the Valley fighter on his butt for a flash knock down. He easily beat the 8-count and resumed the fight. Prescott would continue with a left-hook, left-hook body combination and clearly took the round. Garcia’s right jaw area was now very obviously swollen and deformed. The Colombian was picking up steam as the fight came to the end.

In the 10th and final round, however, Garcia would reestablish his dominance through pressure and once again find the target for his straight-rights and left-hooks.

In the end, Garcia came out on top by the scores 96-92, 95-94, and 96-93.

Despite this solid win, chinks in Garcia’s defensive armor were obvious as he was consistently tagged with the jab to the point of heavy swelling around the right side of his face. Yet it is with these defensive flaws that makes Garcia such a fan-friendly fighter.

One thing is for sure, with his third consecutive win on network television Garcia will get heavy consideration for a big name fight in the near future.

ROBERTO GARCIA EXTENDS HIS WIN STREAK BY BLUDGEONING VICTOR CAYO INTO SUBMISSION
Posted by Matthew Swain on May 1, 2014 23:45

Roberto Garcia has not had an easy road as a professional boxer. In his 13-year career he has frequently fought out of his normal weight class and on short notice. He did both of those things in February when he took a fight with Norberto Gonzalez on short notice and gutted out an entertaining decision. That win put him in position to get another TV date and he did not disappoint tonight on a special Thursday edition of Friday Night Fights on ESPN2.

Garcia (35-3, 23 KO) stopped Victor Cayo in the 6th round of their 10 round welterweight(ish) fight by keeping to his strengths- namely relentless pressure and combination punching in volume. The 34-year-old Texan took a couple of rounds to get warmed up, but once he did Cayo could not stem the tide. Cayo (32-5, 23 KO) took the first two rounds on my card by countering smartly while circling away from the ever advancing Garcia, but by the forth round he was getting punched, nudged, and outright shoved all over the ring. Cayo fired back bravely, but was unable to keep Garcia off of him and by the 5th round he was wilting from the pressure. The 6th round was all Garcia. He was steaming ahead at full speed and caught Cayo with a brutal left hook that caused him to stagger back to the ropes. It was all over at that point. Garcia poured it on using thudding body shots to set up an over hand right that landed flush and as Cayo stumbled into the corner the referee jumped in to save to battered fighter.

At first glance the stoppage seemed premature, but after some consideration I changed my mind. Cayo didn’t protest, so why should we? He was getting beaten up and was unable to deter Garcia’s advance. Letting it go on would only have delayed the inevitable.

Garcia again has given his stock another boost. He was fighting at 147 (Cayo weighed in at 150- Garcia at 146.2) for the first time since 2007, and claims that is his natural class. I thought he looked solid at light middleweight, and he looked gigantic at welterweight. He is a fan-friendly fighter with many gifts and several flaws. He’s tough as nails, has a good punch and undeniable stamina, but he’s also a bit slow and easy to hit. I can’t say who would be a logical next opponent, but I want to watch it. Garcia makes for fun fights, and there can never be too many of those.

Featured fighters Ricardo “Tato” Lamas of Brownsville and Roberto “La Amenaza” Garcia of Weslaco enjoyed successful outings fighting in front of their Rio Grande Valley fans at Saturday’s STFC boxing show at Boggus Ford Events Center in Pharr.

Their bouts marked a homecoming of sorts.

Lamas, a native of Matamoros who fights out of Brownsville, recently returned from a three-month stay in Mexico City, where he recuperated from a right hand injury and worked with world-class trainer Ignacio Beristain, a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Fighting in Saturday’s main event with Beristain in his corner, Lamas (9-0, eight knockouts) won his welterweight bout by dispatching Alberto Navarro (3-12-3, one KO) of Kingsville via technical knockout at the end of the first round.

A strong left punch to the body by Lamas appeared to jolt Navarro, and he went down a few seconds later, before the bell sounded to end the opening round. Navarro struggled to get up by the count of eight and then told the referee he couldn’t continue, so the fight was halted.

“I didn’t think that punch was going to end it,” Lamas said. “He’s a strong fighter, and I thought he was going to get up. He came to fight, so I thought it was going to go more rounds, but all my training in Mexico City with one of the best trainers in the world showed in that one round.

“People may say it’s a (relatively easy) first-round knockout, but they don’t see the three months of hard work I had in Mexico City,” Lamas added. “It was very hard work every day.”

While Garcia continues to live in Weslaco, most of his recent fights have been on television from such locations as Chicago and Miami. Saturday was his first Valley ring appearance in nearly three years.

“La Amenaza” (38-3, 23 KOs) prevailed decisively in the co-main event on a six-round unanimous decision (60-54, 60-54, 60-54) against super welterweight opponent Santos Benavides (25-10-2, 19 KOs), a southpaw and native of Nicaragua who fights out of San Antonio.

“They just told me about this fight 13 days ago and we took it,” said Garcia, whose most recent bout prior to Saturday was April 24, 2015, in Chicago. “I said, ‘I can do it, I’m fine. Let’s jump on it.’

“It’s beautiful to fight in the Valley again,” Garcia added. “I felt the love of the people. I’ve been asked for a couple of years now when I would be fighting locally again. It’s always good to come back and kind of regroup. They can’t all be big TV fights on ESPN or Spike TV.”

Other winners on the well-attended card included Japanese lightweight Shoki Sakai, McAllen middleweight Benito Rios and Weslaco super bantamweight Brandon Lee Figueroa.

Fighting out of Mexico City and with Beristain in his corner, Sakai (21-5, 13 KOs) won an eight-round unanimous decision (77-75, 78-74, 78-74) against El Paso’s Carlos Villa (11-3-1, six KOs). Rios (3-0, three KOs) knocked out Harlingen’s Jorge Cortez (0-1), also a mixed martial arts fighter, in the second round. Figueroa (6-0, five KOs) stopped Jahaziel Vasquez Alvarez of Saltillo, Mexico, in the second round as well.
Roberto Garcia was born in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico and moved to Houston, TX, at a very young age. It was in Houston that Garcia was first introduced to boxing. His father turned the garage into a gym were he trained Garcia's two older brothers, Rafael and George. Even though he was still too young to box, Garcia began imitating his brothers. He was nicknamed "La Amenaza" ("The Menace") as a young boy by his father, because he destroyed everything in his path.

Garcia grew up in one of Houston's most dangerous neighborhoods, where nothing ever came easy. At the age of 10 he was dealt a bad hand: in a instant he lost both his parents, Rafael and Antonia Garcia. The loss of his parents is something he doesn't like to talk about. Garcia moved with his two older brothers to Weslaco, TX, where they lived with their maternal grandparents. The next few years were the hardest for Garcia. Without his parents, he reportedly lost his sense of direction, rebelling against authority, and bouncing from home-to-home and then to relatives from his father's side -- his aunt Chavela and uncle Luis.

Boxing and Garcia crossed roads again when he was 16-years-old. During his junior year in high school he was challenged by a local Boys and Girls Club Champion at school. Not wanting to get into any more trouble, Garcia opted to take the fight into the ring after school. "My very first sparring session didn't last too long. It was over in the first round. As soon as I hit him on the nose he quit, I think it might have been broken," Garcia was quoted as saying. The local boxing coach talked to him after the sparring session and convinced him to pick up boxing; since that day boxing has been his number one priority.

During the next three years Garcia won three consecutive Rio Grande Valley Golden Gloves Championships. He then set his sights on the pro ranks. He left home to train in his birth-place of Reynosa, Mexico, with then-WBF Intercontinental Super Bantamweight Champion Nick Bentz. Garcia was convinced to take a few more amateur bouts before making his professional debut.

Entering the Tamamulipas Regional Championship Tournament Garcia won the first two bouts by KO. In the finals he met the defending champion, in what was billed as the fight of the tournament. Garcia won a close decision, finishing his amateur career with a record of 23-3 (17 KOs).

Garcia quickly got recognition in boxing by winning eight consecutive fights, seven by KO in his first year as a pro. After signing a managerial contract he began fighting on more lucrative fightcards, several televised by Telefutura and NBC. "Fighting on the under cards of bigger names such as Rafael Marquez, Vivian Harris, Diosbelys Hurtado, Rocky Juarez, and Juan Diaz makes me train harder," Garcia said, "because I want to be where they are. I want to be a World Champion!"

After suffering a minor set back in April of 2003, Garcia parted ways with trainer Fernando Castrejon, who had been the right-hand man of legendary Mexican trainer Nacho Beristain. After a grueling search for a new trainer, Garcia found Nelson Fernandez, manager of former WBA Welterweight Champion Andrew "Six Heads" Lewis.

I thought he looked solid at middleweight, and he looked gigantic at welterweight.
Roberto Garcia dominated the fight from the opening bell. Putting constant pressure on Williams. In the middle of the 3rd round Garcia conected to the rib cage and Williams went down for an eight count. After he got up Roberto attacked the body again and Williams went down for the count.
In a crossroads bout, Roberto Garcia won an eight round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Jose Shibata Flores at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, CA. Flores controlled the first two rounds, but Garcia (29-3, 21 KO’s) increased his aggression and punch output from the third round on. Garcia dropped Flores with a right hand to the head in the sixth round. Flores (45-11, 26 KO’s) attempted to mount a rally, but came up short. All three judges scored the bout in favor of Garcia by scores of 78-73, 77-74, and 80-71. Garcia rebounds from last year’s defeat to Antonio Margarito, while Flores’ two-fight winning streak is snapped.

Garcia pummeled Rubio for 12 rounds to win the IBA Americas Welterweight belt. Garcia (20-2) was the aggressor throughout but did not put Rubio on the canvas until the final round.
"I’m so happy I beat him," said Garcia, 25. "He’s ranked No. 10 in the world (by the WBC). This is a great accomplishment."
Garcia won a unanimous decision before a delirious, packed crowd. With scores of 115-112, 116-111, and 119-108.

The fight was intense. Rubio suffered a cut over his right eye after an accidental head butt during the eighth round. The fighters had to be separated for continuing to punch after the bell after rounds No. 9 and No. 10.
Both fighters rested in the 11th, saving their energy for what proved to be a wild final round. Told by his corner men he had to have a knockout to win, Garcia went after Rubio throwing hammers to his jaw. Rubio appeared exhausted and fell two minutes into the round when Garcia connected with a savage right hand. Rubio bounced forward off the ropes and rolled up Garcia’s ankles as he fell, knocking both fighters down.
About 25 seconds later, Rubio again was knocked clean the ropes, Rubio took about 20 seconds to reenter the ring, but was ruled a push.

"I would hurt him, and he would come back," said Garcia, who fielded question while holding an ice pack over his left eye. "The difference was in punches. He would land flurries. I would land bombs."
Rubio, 32, concurred. He said he injured his left hand in the second round and that inhibited his punching power.
"He hits very hard," Rubio (32-8-3) said. "My shots were at 40 percent while his were 100 percent."

Rubio said he would like to fight Garcia again but at a lighter weight. That doesn’t seem likely as Garcia referred to himself as a "natural welterweight" and is now looking ahead to a possible fight on HBO later this spring.
