Barry J. Hugman is a sports author, historian and statistician who was born in Hampstead Garden Suburb in 1941 and educated at Clark's College, Finchley. Having spent ten years concentrating on a business career he decided to produce what was called at the time the biggest job in football statistics–collating and presenting the records of all men who had played in the English Leagues since 1946. He has since gone on to publish many other works, especially in the field of soccer and boxing where his books are recognised by the authorities as being market leaders. Other successes have been in devising and setting up the BBBoC British Boxing Awards occasion, which took off in 1984, and launching the Boxing Monthly magazine in 1989. He has also been nominated in the Observer category for the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York and received the British Boxing Board of Control 's Exceptional Award in 2011 for services to the sport of British Professional Boxing.

Hugman's interest in sport, especially boxing, football and cricket began at a very young age, and he soon became physically involved in all three sports as well as studying them seriously. In 1951 Hugman first laced on gloves and found himself very much at home in boxing, continuing to spar with good boys locally and then further afield while learning the rudiments of the sport. Although he had never participated as a registered boxer once he joined his local club, Finchley Amateur Boxing Club, as a bantamweight in 1960 he quickly made his mark under the tutelage of Les Kirk, a former pro welterweight, scoring a second-round kayo over Edgware's Johnny James in his first senior contest (see picture). Fast-tracked to the ABA championships, he failed to make it after breaking his right thumb with the first punch of the fight against a future pro in Johnny Coats before losing narrowly on points. Although coming back strongly his brittle hands continued to let him down forcing him to continuously use ice packs, and when scar tissue damage to his left eye occured almost certainly caused by a lace when heading a heavy football it was all over at the age of 21. After representing his school on the football and cricket fields, Hugman moved on to play for the Finchley Football club juniors and Finchley Colts cricket side, but left both sports when he realised that he was far too light to play senior football at a good level following a trial at Crystal Palace FC and found that he could not afford the time to continue with cricket as a budding wrist spinner.
"While not a Greater Boston item, though there is a connection, on New Year's Day the boxing fans of Halifax, N.S., were treated to one of those things. The principals were Werther Arcelli of Boston, and an opponent giving his name as "Whitney Hurwitz of New York." and claiming to be attached to the stable of Joe Gould, manager of Jimmy Braddock. "Whitey" Hurwitz of Boston, who has not boxed here for months, was supposed to be the chap who appeared at Halifax. However, he contends that he was in Boston on the holiday-miles removed from Halifax. So, it would seem that somebody impersonated him. In any event, the chap who faced Arcelli was in no condition to box and the referee stopped the affair in the second round and it was ruled "no contest". No blame was attached to Areclli. The horse out of the barn, the Halifax Commission has started an investigation which, seemingly, will not bear very much fruit." Additional note: according to Michel Gladu, originally the referee stopped the fight and gave it to Arcelli on technical knockout; then after a few minutes it was changed to a win for Arcelli by disqualification. A few days later the Halifax Boxing Commission ruled that the fight was no contest in two rounds.
<human>192899</human>
Jimmy Howe was born Wong Tung Jim in Taishan, Canton Province (now Guangdong), China in 1899. His father, Wong Howe, moved to America that year to work on the Northern Pacific Railway and in 1904 sent for his family. The Howes settled in Pasco, Washington, where they owned a general store. Howe grew up in the hop fields of Pasco, working and engaging in shadow boxing, to become, by age 19, the so-called "champion Chinese bantamweight of the world." By 1916, it was reported that his mother had become worth almost a million dollars.

A childhood Kodak Brownie camera may have sparked an early interest in photography. The teenaged Howe moved to Oregon after his father's death and briefly considered a career as a boxer before moving to Los Angeles, California. In Los Angeles, Howe took several odd jobs, including work as a commercial photographer's delivery boy and as a busboy at the Beverly Hills Hotel, before becoming interested in movies. Howe eventually took a low-level job at Lasky Studios, which brought him into contact with silent film director Cecil B. DeMille. DeMille gave Howe a job as a clap boy. To earn additional money, Howe took stills during the filming, which he frequently sold to the stars as souvenirs. Howe was a cousin of actress Anna May Wong.

Cinematography Career
James Wong Howe is considered one of the greatest American cinematographers. He had over 130 films to his credit. A master of the use of shadow, he was one of the first to use deep-focus cinematography--photography in which both foreground and distant planes remain in focus. During the 1930s and 1940s he was considered one of the most sought after cinematographers in Hollywood. He was nominated for ten Academy Awards for cinematography, winning twice. Howe was judged to be one of history's ten most influential cinematographers in a survey of the members of the International Cinematographers Guild.

His December 1971 appearance on "The Dick Cavett Show" with comedian/actor Bob Newhart can sometimes be seen to this day on the Decades TV channel ().
*August 22, 1927: Farber defeated Barrett, three rounds @ Madison Square Garden, NY.

----

From the Mike Silver* Obituary (used with permission):

Former bantamweight/featherweight Sammy Farber, who would have been 96 years old next month passed away on July 20, 2005. Sammy, from New York City’s Lower East Side, turned pro in 1927 and compiled (according to Boxrec.com) a 42-15-5 (8 KOs) before retiring in 1932. Ray Arcel and Whitey Bimstein trained him.

Sammy was stopped only once (on cuts) and was never knocked down. On November 21, 1932 he lost a close ten rounds decision to Allan Foston in the latter’s hometown of Toronto, Canada. The Depression era bout returned a small payday. Disgusted with the fact that after paying off his manager and hotel bill he did not have enough money to cover train fare home, Sammy decided to hang up his gloves.

Before he turned pro Farber participated in the very first New York Golden Gloves finals bout. On March 28, 1927 he crossed gloves with Terry Roth in the 112 lb. amateur flyweight championship in Madison Square Garden. Almost 22,000 thousand fans packed the Garden with another 10,000 turned away. After three rounds the judges had the bout even so they ordered both boxers to go another round. Roth was awarded a disputed decision.

During the 1920s and early 1930s the bantam and featherweight divisions were loaded with talent. Noted for his fine left jab and intelligent boxing Sammy was competitive with some of the best fighters of his time. Early victories over Oscar Goldman, Pete DeGrasse and the more experienced Joe Marciente propelled him into a series of bouts with the very hot Pete Sanstol. At the time of their first meeting Sanstol had over 50 pro bouts, losing only one. Farber boasted a 24-3-2 record. In 1929 they fought four times over the six round distances. The bouts were closely contested with Sanstol winning all of them by decision. A newspaper account of one of their fights reported that “Sanstol had the gore flowing from Farber’s mouth… Pete kept boring both hands to the face and body with Farber stabbing a left to the face and a hard right to the stomach. This Farber boy is a genuine prospect… a very cute boxer with ring brains.”

For many years after retirement Sammy operated two popular taverns in his old Lower East side neighborhood. In the 1970s the sixty something Farber was accosted in the street by two thugs, one armed with a knife, who tried to mug him. Farber went to work flattening both but not before being cut from his shoulder to elbow. The police arrived to find the two muggers lying in the gutter. Sammy got 48 stitches for his trouble but was back at work the next day.

Working and remaining active was a way of life for Sammy. In his eighties and nineties he was working as a messenger for a Wall Street firm. Every morning, until the age of 93 Sammy took the 45-minute subway ride from his home in Forest Hills, New York. He was a very open and friendly man fond of talking about his career and, until a few years ago, could easily recall details of many of his fights. He never tired of showing a fan how the great Benny Leonard showed him the proper way to clinch. Sammy would pull you close, use his right arm to grab your left behind and above the elbow and use his other hand to push the crook of your left elbow in the opposite direction. He then asked you to try and break free. It felt like a death grip. This octogenarian could maneuver you around like a rag doll. Amazing.<br>
Notes
*Carnera was a slight favorite on the afternoon of the fight. By the time the boxers entered the ring, Baer was slightly favored.
*The gross gate was $428,392.80, and the net was $361,357.29.
*The paid attendance was 52,268.
*Carnera's purse was $122,057.08, and Baer's was $65,044.31.
*The Associated Press reported: "Eleven times in eleven rounds, the massive Italian, biggest man ever to hold the title, crashed to the floor from Baer's blows, twice in the last round, before Referee Arthur Donovan stepped in and stopped the fight after two minutes, 16 seconds of the 11th. . . . A twelfth time the giant slid to the floor full-length from lost balance in a wild lunge at his foe."
*There has been a long debate about exactly how many knockdowns Carnera suffered in this bout. Some say as few as seven, others say 10 and still others claim there were 12. Nat Fleischer, who was ringside for the fight, stated in the August 1934 issue of The Ring Magazine, of which he was the founder and editor, that Carnera was down 12 times and slipped once. He gave Baer three knockdowns in the first round, three in the second, one in the third, three in the 10th and two in the 11th. He said Carnera slipped in the eighth after missing a punch.
