'''Bold text'''The Washington, D.C. boxing scene has developed alot of talent over the last ten years. My name is Richard McCombs and this is my story, I began Boxing at the tender age of thirteen at the Benning Park Recreation Center Located in southeast Washington, D.C. This gym was full of talented fighters such as Sean Johnson 106lbs, James Baker 132lbs, Demarcus "ChopChop" Corley 140lbs, Clarence "Untouchable" Vincent 118lbs, & Rodney Dews 175lbs.

My Trainer was Jerode Dews A.K.A "DotDew" who had a passion of turning a lost kid into a future Champion. I had my first ameteur fight on May 24th, 1996 at The Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Gym located in Palmer Park Maryland, making my debut to the Junior Welterweight Division facing Antoine Mcfadden. I won by decision. From that point I would go undefeated having a record of 10-0. Then in November of 1996, I would enter a Christmas tournament held at the Highland Boxing Gym. There I faced one of DC's most talented ameteurs, Spencer Harsley who had a record of 121-16. I lost by a 2nd round KO. After being defeated, I headed back to the gym to fight a short time later in the Silver Gloves Tournament which was held at Sugar Ray Leonard boxing gym. I won the championship to lead me to the regionals where I would face another veteran of the game, Terry Cane. Having never experienced being on that level of boxing , my style of boxing was no match for the craftier Cane. I then fought in the P.G. County Fair Tournament in 1997 fighting Bobby Lang and won by decision. From there, I entered the Mark "TooSharp" Johnson Tournament where I won the entire contest in my weightclass of 139lbs. I would go on to enter the Golden Gloves Tournament as well as the A.B.F tournament in 1999 were I faced George Armenta for the record whom I was beating with the jab easily. I must say he's a good fighter. I was never able to forgive myself after loosing to him so I decided that I wanted nothing else to do with the amateurs and turned pro on Jan 23, 2001.
I made My Professional Debut Against Martin Ward at the Washington D.C Armory were I won by tko in the first round. Six months later my mother in law passed away and I wasn't sure as to when I would fight again. Then my Manager at the time, Cleveland Burgess, presented a fight to me that to his knowledge would be good for my career and with only an one day notice, I excepted. On June 29th, 2001, at The Washington DC Convention Center I took on Tony Jeter 2-0(2ko's) and I suffered the first loss of my professional career by KO in round number one. Having to except this loss, I stayed away from the gym for a while. My Manager presented me with the opportunity to take on a fight against Marvin Anderson on April 12, 2002. I weighed in at 163lbs and he weighed in at 177lbs. I had to face another loss due to an outcome of a TKO in round one. I promised myself I would never enter the ring unprepared again. This I owe to myself and those who have inspired me over the years, especially my cousin former Welterweight Champion of the world, Maurice Blocker, Henry Jones and Gary Digital Williams. Now in 2007, I'm training harder and waiting patiently for my time to shine.
