Al Gilbert, New York middleweight who meets Ezzard Charles Monday night in the Parkway Arena, eased up his training grind yesterday at the Cincinnati Gym, confining his activities to rope skipping and punching the light bags.
Frank Bachman, Gilbert's manager, became expansive over his boy's showing, "I'd be willing to bet our entire end of the purse that Gilbert at least whips Charles," reviving reports that Bert Williams, manager of Ezzard, and Bachman may work on a winner-takes-all basis. The Cincinnati Boxing Commission, however, is said to frown upon such a wager.

For the first time in his fistic career, close-mouthed Ezzard Charles, predicted that he would knock out Al Gilbert, when they collide over the ten-round route Monday night.
While Charles was unburdening himself with his first prefight prediction, the hard-hitting Gilbert, who came out earlier in the week with a cut-and-dry stock statement that he would murder "dat bum," meaning Charles, clipped and cuffed a trio of sparmates yesterday in workouts at the Cincinnati Gym.
Gilbert's soft-spoken manager, Frank Bachman, who has handled such moneymakers as Maxie Rosenbloom, Lou Jenkins, and Bob Olin, point out that the New York sleep-slinger has kayoed 21 out of 40 opponents, and hints that Charles may be whistling in the dark.
Ezzard rope skipped and fiddled with the light sacks yesterday, as he wound up his fourth week of training at the Williams A.C.
Charles faces Gilbert Tonite In Ten Rounds At Parkway
Cincinnati Enquirer, July 21, 1941

Billy Becker signed the former middle kingpin of the Hawaiian Army Post after Gilbert kayoed Henry Schaft, New York, in seven rounds at Holyoke, Mass. Becker knew that Promoter Mike Jacobs was booming the sensational Shaft for a shot at Champion Billy Soose.
Ezzard, who, at 19, is considered a coming champion by such astute critics as Barney Ross, former welter champion, will have a four or five pound weight advantage. But weight is not expected to settle the fight, Gilbert having had considerable experience at belting out light heavies. In fact, Gilbert chilled most of the middleweight and light-heavyweight contenders of the South before he claimed the Dixie middle championship.
Frank Bachman, manager of Gilbert, insists that if there's any knocking out it will be done by his boy. Bachman backed up his words by declaring that his boy would be willing to fight on a winner-take-all basis. Bert Williams, Ezz's pilot turned down the bid.

Ez Winner On Technical Kayo
Ezzard Charles may not be ready for Ken Overlin or Middleweight Champion Billy Soose, but Ebony Ezzard is too good for the like of Al Gilbert.
Charles had little or no trouble hammering out a six-round technical knockout over the champion of the Hawaiian army post and way points.
Charles opened slowly last night and "warmed up" through the first three rounds by rocking Gilbert with fairly stiff left jabs. He bagan to throw an occasional right in the fourth and in the fifth he started hooking his left and mixing his right more frequently.
The mixture was confusing and unhealthy for Gilbert and a signal to the 2,000 fans at Leader's Parkway Arena that the end was near. By the end of the fifth, Charles's two-fisted attack had blood pouring from Gilbert's nose and lower lip.
Referee Joe Camille, acting upon the advice of Doctor Michael Barrett, ordered Gilbert not to answer the bell for the sixth round. The fight was Charles's first since he dropped a ten-round decision to Overlin a month ago at Crosley Field. It was his twenty-third triumph in 24 fights. Charles weighed 162 pounds and Gilbert 159.

Charles-Yarosz Go In Air Over Weight Disagreements
Cincinnati Enquirer, May 10, 1941

Promoter George Nichol's plan to match Ezzard Charles with former Middleweight Champion Teddy Yarosz of Cleveland, June 9 at Crossley Field ran aground yesterday.

Disagreements over a weight clause in the contracts has the proposed fight hanging in mid-air, and unless a plan to suit all concerned can be worked out, the match is slated to fall by the wayside.

Bert Williams, the manager of Ezzard, charges the contract signed by him and the one signed by Yarosz's manager were altered as to weight without his approval.

Williams claims he specified that Yarosz should not scale more than 170 pounds. He said the contract he signed bore this weight.
Promoter Nichols admits the weight in the contracts were altered but claims it was done because Williams had agreed to the fight provided Yarosz would weigh in at 175 or less, not exceeding the light-heavyweight maximum, Yarosz is a light-heavyweight.

Bill Goebel, Chairman of the Cincinnati Boxing Commission, called Williams's attention to the altered weight in the contract after it had been presented to the commission.

Williams says, "Its an attempt to take advantage of Charles - a nineteen year-old schoolboy who will be giving away eight or nine pounds at 170."

Goebel claims the altered contract is no contract and that there is nothing the commission can do under the circumstances. Williams says Sam Becker, brother of the promoter Benny Becker, is a close friend of Chris Dundee and has promised to use his influence to get Dundee to agree for Georgie Abrams of Ken Overlin to meet Charles.

Original contracts were declared null and void by the Cincinnati Boxing Commission on Monday, May 12th.
Promoter Benny Becker is expected to announce this week result of negotiations to match Ken Overlin, New York, former middleweight champion, or George Abrams, Cleveland topflighter against Ezzard Charles.

Chris Dundee, manager of Overlin and Abrams, is said to have responded favorably to Becker's overtures for a Queen City scrap.

It is believed that a $3,000 guarantee and a cut of the gate would woo in the Overlin camp. Becker has said repeatedly that he is willing to fork out plenty of cash, believing that such a battle would gross $12,000.

Understand Chris Dundee, manager of Ken Overlin, asked plenty of questions about the fairness and ability of the local fight judges before he agreed to sign for the June 9 fight with Ezzard Charles. Overlin has a guarantee for a return match with Billy Soose for the championship in August and has a $5,000 forfeit posted by Soose. Dundee doesn't want any black marks on Overlin's report card and isn't eager to take any chances on a "home-town" decision. You can't blame Dundee for being cautious after last week's decision, which, according to all concerned, robbed Overlin of his championship.

Bert Williams, Acting For Ezzard Charles, Signs To Meet Ken Overlin
Cincinnati Enquirer, May 22, 1941

Bert Williams, who heretofore has had more stalls than a stable, signed for his fighter, Ezzard Charles, undefeated middleweight, to meet Ken Overlin, popularly rated as the No. 1 middlweight of the world, June 9 at Crosley Field.

After letting loose in habitual fashion a few mild briefs just to keep in form the wordy Welshman agreed that Charles would make a weight limit of 164 pounds. Overlin fights around 161.

Promoter Benny Becker refused to disclose the pay tickets. Overlin will get, reliable railbirds say, $3,000 with a percentage clause, while Charles will get $400 and a percentage.

"Gee, this is my big chance," Charles remarked after Williams's ink-spreading ironed out the last detail in probably Cincinnati's biggest fight since the halcyon days of Freddie Miller, former featherweight champion. Williams, actually a sourpuss concealing a heart of gold, obviously was elated. "This looks like it," Williams said.

Ken Overlin Not Taking Any Chances
Cincinnati Enquirer, May 25, 1941

Washington, D.C., May 24 - "If Buddy Baer was "robbed" when Referee Donovan disqualified him in the seventh round here last night, then I was "robbed, chiseled and angled" out of my middleweight crown."

The flippant sailor viewed the spectacular Louis-Baer fight but refused futher comment, "It's not my job," he said, "and I guess Donovan knows what he's doing."
"What I'm worried about now," Overlin continued, "is a young boy in Cincinnati by the name of Ezzard Charles. He's only nineteen-year-old schoolboy, but I'm fighting him June 9 at Crosley Field there and I hear the kid really can hit."
"But this old sailor boy is going back to New York tonight and get in the pink. I trained for Soose, you know, and I'm in good shape now. But I ain't taking any chances of blowing the duke in Cincinnati because I wanna meet Soose again."

Boxing column
Cincinnati Enquirer, May 25, 1941

"What's he got to win?" the boys are asking, pointing out that a victory for Overlin will mean nothing, while a loss would be disastrous and possibly would black out his contract for a return shot with Soose August 11.
The fact that little Benny Becker has guaranteed the slugging sailor $2000 with 30% of the gate hardly can be overlooked. Two thousand dollars isn't, and never was for that matter, hay.
The bout gives Charles, a chance to leap into glory, and no one knows that better than the Woodland High junior. He's getting his biggest purse - about $450, and if class, courage, and youth have anything to do with it, it won't be the peak purse of his career.

Charles In Heavy Workout For Overlin Bout
Cincinnati Enquirer, June 1, 1941

Ezzard Charles, who never disobeyed his manager, Bert Williams, in his life, broke training yesterday - for the biggest bout of his little less than dazzling career.
Ezzard confessed : He was hot and sweat was washing off him. The dust and the smoke of downtown Cincinnati seemed to grind into his flesh. A good day for a swim, all right. The gym's was just around the corner.
Ezzard was cooled off.
Later he had the job of cooling off his hot-tempered manager, Williams, who pointed out to his boy that swimming is a good way to cool off but not to train for a fight. Capable, Williams became detailsome, explaining that swimming easily could unhinge the fine meshing of muscles needed by a fighter.
Bert wore a great big smile yesterday, however, when Ezz worked out in the morning session at the Williams A.C. Going against imported middleweight spar mates. the dynamite boy romped through eight blistering rounds and cuffed the heavy bags. "I've never seen his timing any better," Williams commented, adding "and timing's everything in this game."

Charles Bout Risky
Cincinnati Enquirer, June 2, 1941

New York, June 1 - Aroused by a growing whispering campaign that he missed a beat when he signed for his No.1 money maker, Ken Overlin, against Charles, Chris Dundee announced today that he personally would "scout" the Cincinnati comer.
He will leave for Cincinnati early this week. Dundee's decision, unprecedented in his tenure as Overlin's brain cells, followed on the heels of an interview with Joe Sutka, rugged Detroit light heavyweight, who was masterfully laced by the nineteen-year-old.
Sutka is believed to have informed Dundee that Charles is one of the most savage hitting cloutsmiths extant. Sutka, lasted the limit with Anton Christoforidis is expected to drill with Overlin.
Dundee's announcement climaxed a growing belief in the Overlin camp here that the June 9 go is risky. A loss would black out Overlin's tentative return go in August or July with Billy Soose, who recently was awarded an unpopular decision over Ken in a title bout.
Dundee denied vigorously that he was "dressed down" by Promoter Mike Jacobs for signing for the Cincinnati skirmish. Opposition managers have declared openly that Jacobs refused to set a specific date for the return fracas with Soose because he saw a good chance of Overlin being blasted out by the Cincinnati youngster.

Looking 'em Over
by Bob Bohne, Cincinnati Enquirer, June 6, 1941

You've got to be psychic, or at least lucky, to come up with the winner of Monday night's melee between Ezzard Charles and Ken Overlin.
You can't find the answer in the record books. You can dig through the past performances until you wear blisters on your fingers and won't find where the two have engaged a common foe. Moreover, you won't find where they have met an opponent upon which you can figure "comparative scores."
Overlin, the belligerent sailor, has been knocking around the top of the middleweight class for several years. He has confined his leather-tossing activities to the big boys.
Charles, the Woodward High School boy, has been bashing the heads of palookas for the last year or two. Overlin hasn't even heard of most of the fellows Charles has fought.
Overlin is crafty old man with dozen or more years of experience under his belt. The years have taken some of the wallop out of his punch, but the experience he has gained offsets this.
Overlin Is Crafty - Charles Is Strong
Not so long ago he engaged Steve Belloise in New York. Belloise uncorked a terrific belt that floored Overlin in the sixth, but the Battling Tar pulled himself off the floor and fought his way out of the hole to gain the decision. When the final bell sounded Belloise was arm weary from punching Overlin's arms and elbows. We mention this just to show what a tricky old gaffer Overlin is.
What Charles can do against boys like Belloise, Soose, Hostak and Garcia - the sort Overlin has been playing around with - remains to be seen. Charles hasn't had an opportunity to meet the big-name boys.
Charles's chief weapon when he climbs though the ropes Monday night will be youth, strength, and a wallop. Charles is rangy, with a long reach and most of his weight concentrated in his shoulders. He is hard to hurt and he can punch.
His wallop is attested by the fact that he has whipped home the sleeper punch on 19 of 22 opponents he has faced since turning professional. He has been knocked off his feet only once in those battles, and on that occasion got up to soudly trounce Billy Bengal, the fellow who landed the sucker punch.
Beat The Best As An Amateur
As an amateur Charles fought some 50 or 60 battles and topped his amateur career by winning the National A. A. U. middleweight title. He was floored only once on his way to the championship, a hard-hitting youngster, last name McDaniel, floored him in Chicago, but Charles shook off the fog and copped the three-rounder - a near impossible accomplishment in such short space.
One thing is certain, Charles isn't going to swoon when the referee calls him to the center of the ring for instructions.
We talked to him after a workout yesterday at the Williams A.C., and he appeared to have no more fear of Overlin than he has of next week's examinations at Woodward.
He feels he is headed toward the upper bracket of ring earnings, and intends to make the most of the opportunity.
"I'm going to start punching from the opening gong and keep it up until something drops," Charles explained last night when asked if he had any special plans.

Overlin In Impressive Drill For Charles
by Bob Bohne, Cincinnati Enquirer, June 8, 1941

Ken Overlin, the middleweight madcap, stepped the equivalent of three rounds in an impressive workout yesterday afternoon at the Cincinnati Gym in preparation for his Monday night scrap with Ezzard Charles.
What impressed the onlookers most was the sailor's left - a loose, fast moving left that shoots out like a piston and hooks like something catapulted out of a spring machine.
The consensus of such ring-wise veterans as former Featherweight Champion Freddie Miller, Harry McCarthy, and Bob Bonner was that the left will cause plenty of trouble for Ezzard. Overlin's infighting and his ability to roll with punches thrown by his sparmate, middleweight Curley Denton, also impressed the gathering.
These same sages were quick to admit, however, that Overlin might not pack the wallop of Ezzard and reckoned as how the Battlin' Tar had best not make any mistakes and let Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Ezzard tag him in a vulnerable spot.
Overlin beamed confidence throughout and after the workout, once stopping to inquire facetiously, "who's the favorite?"
In the dressing room he expressed his confidence by saying he expected to have some trouble but would win handily.
"I expect some trouble - these young fighters always cause some - but I'll win," he remarked, then added, "there's no doubt about it."
"You appear to be in good shape for a nightclub addict," someone remarked as the sailor boy was removing his gloves.
"I am in good shape," Overlin replied, "this old boy takes care of himself. I had 19 fights in the last year and a fellow doesn't get drunk every night and come through that many fights - all 10 rounds or more - like I've done.
"You know I love a good time. I like night clubbing and I like to drink, but things are exaggerated. Being a champion, everything I do gets into print. If I take a drink or two and visit a couple or three or maybe four night clubs, I'm drunk, especially in the smaller towns. I like New York, there's no place like it. You can have a good time there like everyone else, and people think nothing of it."
Immediately after the workout, Promoter Benny Becker put the old knockout on reports that the fight would be broadcast. Bert Williams, was the first to file a complaint.
"I won't stand for any broadcast," Williams told Becker. Overlin and his trainer Izzy Kline, seconded the motion. There's no use giving away something you're trying to sell, was the way Overlin put it. Since both fighters are receiving guarantees but have options on switching to the percentage basis, a full agreement was needed for a broadcast. Becker agreed there'll be no broadcast.
Becker said the ticket office at 718 Vine Street will be open all day today.
Weighing in time, originally set for tomorrow at 3 o'clock at the Times-Star Gym, has been moved forward to 1 o'clock.

Charles Meets First Setback As Pro Fighter
by Bob Bohne, Cincinnati Enquirer, June 10, 1941

The Ezzard Charles victory march ran into a sharp detour last night at Crosley Field when he dropped a ten-round decision to Ken Overlin.
Overlin had all the better of the going in the late rounds and hammered home hard punches throughout the final three heats.
Charles, somewhat tired and weary from his early efforts, couldn't protect himself against the late shifting attack of the Ancient Mariner.
But Ezzard was game, and, apparently realizing that he was on the short end of the score sheet, grew careless and started to wade in. This was his undoing. The former sailor was waiting for just such a move and he punched Charles somewhat at will during the final two stanzas.
For six rounds, however, there was little to choose between the fighters. Thereafter it was obvious to most of the crowd of 5,000, which paid approximately $9,000, that the well-planned battle of Overlin would result in victory.
Decision of the judges was unanimous, all three marking their cards in favor of the former middleweight champion.

No Knockdowns

There were no knockdowns, although Charles did go to his knees for count in the second round. He bounced up as soon as his knees touched the floor and apparently hit the canvas as the result of a shove.
Charles's best round was the sixth. He tagged the Sailor several times with a two-fisted attack, alternately aimed at the body and head. The blows hurt, but Overlin shook off the effects and never was in trouble thereafter.
Most ringsiders had the battle scored even for six rounds with two for Charles, two for Overlin, and two even. But Overlin took the final four.
Both battlers concentrated on body punching until the sixth when Charles showed no preference as to where he punched Overlin. In the seventh, the Sailor began to move in instead of backing away and he had the better of Charles in the in-fighting. Overlin alternated, shifted his attack to the body and head in the seventh and eight and kept up this procedure in the ninth and tenth with left jabs and hooks.

Charles Nose Bleeds

Best punches of Charles's were ripped home chielfy on the counter fighting. When he tried to take the lead he was outmaneuvered.
Charles finished the battle with blood dripping from his nose and a small cut just below his left eye but he was hollering for another shot at the Sailor before he cooled out. It was the first defeat in 23 professional bouts for Charles.
The fight was moved forward and run off as the second bout due to threatening weather. Cloudy sky and intermittent showers in suburbs held the crowd far below the expected attendance.

Detroiter Signed To Meet Charles - Kozole Unbeaten In Eighteen Bouts
Cincinnati Enquirer, May 4, 1941

Rudy Kozole, Detroit, was signed yesterday as the opponent for Ezzard Charles, Cincinnati's unbeaten middleweight, for the ten-round feature on the fight show Monday night, May 12, in Music Hall Sports Arena. Kozole also is unbeaten, having won 18 professional bouts. He defeated Gib Jones by a wide margin in a bout here several weeks ago.

Charles was to have met Johnny (Bandit) Romero, but the West coast boxer's poor showing against Anton Christoforidis, light-heavyweight champion, last week caused a switch in opponents.
Charles In Form, Kicking Over Sparring Partners For Monday Night
Cincinnati Enquirer, May 8, 1941

Ezzard Charles, Cincinnati middleweight, who meets Rudy Kozole, Detroit middleweight, undeteated in 18 professional fights, kicked his sparring partners all over the lot yesterday in three training bouts at the Williams A.C.

Showing form, hitting ability and everything else it takes for a top middleweight, Charles indicates that he will be in a vicious mood Monday night to check Kozole's winning streak.

That the visiting scrapper is no flash in the pan is borne out by the fact that several of the foremost men in boxing in Detroit are behind his campaign.

Ezzard Charles came through with his twenty-second straight win by easily outpointing Rudy Kozole, in a dull ten-rounder. Kozole fought defensively for much of the bout, resorting to holding at the end. Charles was an easy winner.

Amateur Career
During his first year as a professional, various newspapers mention his long winning streak dating all the way back to 1937 as an amateur. On July 26, 1940 before his 8th scheduled pro bout, Cincinnati Enquirer says if Charles is beaten it'll be his first defeat in 40 fights. Prior to his 10th pro bout with Billy Hood, Cincinnati Enquirer mentions Ezzard having been unbeaten in 48 starts. After his 12th pro bout, when he knocked out Charley Jerome of Memphis, Tenn., Associated Press reports it being his 50th straight win and he hasn't been on the losing side of a bout since he dropped a close, three round decision in the finals of a 1937 regional amateur tournament in Cincinnati.
Record Issues
The previously published 1940 record for Charles is inaccurate, evidently because his first manager, Bert Williams of Cincinnati, padded it with fights that did not occur. Checks of two newspapers (The Cincinnati Enquirer and The Ohio State Journal of Columbus, Ohio) by historian Herbert Goldman, using the facilities of the Library of Congress and a Cincinnati newspaper by Jack Kincaid, found the following fights untraceable:

* Eddie Fowler, Portsmouth, Ohio, May 10, 1940.
* Pat Wright, Middletown, Ohio, May 17, 1940.

Other untraceable professional fights:

*Al Woodridge, Portsmouth, Ohio, February 26, 1940. This was reported as an upcoming amateur bout in the February 24, 1940, edition of The Portsmouth Times, and the bout is listed as an amateur contest by The Cyber Boxing Zone.
*Jimmy Brown, Reading, Pennsylvania, March 20, 1940. This bout was not reported in The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (search by Luckett Davis). Charles knocked out James Brown in the third round on March 28, 1939, at Cincinnati, winning State AAU middleweight title.
*Bradley Lewis, San Francisco, California, June 24, 1940. This was actually an amateur bout that occurred on April 12, 1939.

Even in 1940 and 1941, Charles' record still listed these untraceable fights, although the details given were varied and conflicted from one telling to another. It seems best to omit all of these fights from Charles' record, at least until they can be verified.

Professional Career
*Defeated Joe Louis, Teddy Yarosz, Anton Christoforidis, Gus Lesnevich, Charley Burley twice, Lloyd Marshall twice, Oakland Billy Smith twice, Jersey Joe Walcott twice, Archie Moore three times, Jimmy Bivins four times, and Joey Maxim five times.
*Was ranked as the No. 1 light heavyweight contender by The Ring in 1947.
*Knocked out Sam Baroudi on February 20, 1948. Baroudi died from injuries sustained in the fight.
*Defeated Jersey Joe Walcott by a fifteen-round unanimous decision on June 22, 1949, to win the vacant National Boxing Association World Heavyweight Championship.
*Defeated Joe Louis by a fifteen-round unanimous decision on September 27, 1950, to gain universal recognition as World Heavyweight Champion.
*Successfully defended the title against 8 fighters.
*Lost the title to Jersey Joe Walcott by a seventh-round knockout on July 18, 1951.
*Attempted to regain the World Heavyweight Championship three times, losing once to Walcott in 1952 and twice to Rocky Marciano in 1954.
*From 1955 until his retirement in 1959, Charles fought twenty-three times and only won ten of those bouts.
*Charles died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, on May 28, 1975. Charles said he first noticed the ailment in 1955. "After a guy hit me, I didn't seem to be able to get away," he recalled. "I didn't have the same coordination."
Kozole also is unbeaten, having won 18 professional bouts. He defeated Gib Jones by a wide margin in a bout here several weeks ago.

Kozole fought defensively for much of the bout, resorting to holding at the end. Charles was an easy winner.
Boxer From Detroit To Meet Gib Jones On Charles Card
Cincinnati Enquirer, March 26, 1941

Realizing that Sutka is of a rugged type, Manager Bert Williams began yesterday to feed light-heavyweight sparring partners to Charles in order to accustom him to the big fellows. Charles went six rounds with his heavier mates and tapered off with four rounds of calisthenics at his Fifth Street gym.

There is no question that Sutks is a superior fighter to Billy Bengal, a Detroit battler whom Charles decisioned several weeks ago, and Charles is preparing accodingly.

Sutka has been a busy mixer during his ring career. Although only 23 years of age, the Canadian born Pole has had 62 fights. He has won 48 of them - 22 by the knockout route and 26 by decisions. Like Charles, he never has been knocked out. In an important fight a couple of months ago he dropped a ten-round decision to Anton Christoforidis, present N.B.A. champion.

Charles Extends Win Streak With Triumph Over Sutka
by Bob Bohne, Cincinnati Enquirer, Apr 1, 1941

Hard-hitting Ezzard Charles moved upward another notch in his climb to fistic fame by pounding out a clean-cut victory over Joe Sutka, rugged Detroit middleweight, last night at Music Hall Sports Arena.

Ezzard shot the works trying to put Sutka away for keeps but Sutka, showing a far greater capacity to absorb punishment than ability to dish it out, was in there catching at the final bell.

Although Charles spun the Detroit battler repeatedly with terrific smashes and put nine out of ten rounds on the right side of the ledger, he failed to floor Sutka. And, despite the beating he took, Sutka never ceased to be a dangerous man.

Strictly a slugging type of fighter, Sutka ripped home some hard blows himself and was dangerous at all times. He did his best punching coming out of the clinches and countering after he had been stung by one of Charles's smashes. His ability to come back fighting when seemingly hurt by a hard punch prevented Charles leveling off for a killing blow.

For Charles the victory was No. 21 in as many professional fights, and a crowd of 2,000 paid $2,100 to see the scrap.

Charles, favored by a weight advantage of nearly four pounds and full head in height, began to touch up Sutka with stinging lefts and rights to the body in the first two stanzas.

The fighting tempo was speeded up in the third and Charles knew he had a rough customer to handle. Sutka, stopped by powerful body blows as he waded in during the opening two rounds, began to take the blows and slug away in close. For a few moments in the fourth round it appeared that this plan might work as he ripped home a couple of rights to Charles's head. But, Charles, a slugger in his own right when the occasion called for it, began to slug back.

By the end of the sixth, Sutka was convinced that even at slugging, Charles was the better man. Sutka seemed to give up all hope - except for a possible haymaker - early in the seventh and began to clinch and cover.

The slugging was one-sided from here out with Charles doing the throwing and Sutka the catching. Although Ezzard ripped away at will, he could not slip over his "Sunday punch". Try as he might, Charles couldn't make Sutka's knees to buckle and he couldn't set himself for Sutka came out swinging when least expected.

Bengal's manager, Mel Richards, informed promoter George Nichols yesterday that his charge is engaging in intensive drills and is determined on avenging a defeat suffered by Charles three weeks ago.

The Detroiter made "history" in the first match as he landed a one-count knockdown on Charles to become the only battler who made him hit the canvas. Bengal lost the decision by a fairly wide margin, but he won the approval of the fans with his aggressiveness and is figured to put up another good scrap.
The Ezzard Charles-Billy Bengal fight, scheduled for next Monday night, March 3, fell by the wayside yesterday when George Nichols announced cancellationof the match.

Benny Becker, who will stage the Leo Rodak-Herschel Joiner twelve-round match Monday, March 10, at the Music Hall Arena, got busy late yesterday and announced that he will feature Charles on his card in a special ten-round bout. Becker as yet has not closed for an opponent for the Cincinnati Flash.
Charles is in red hot form right now and is eager to go against the best, and Cincinnati ring fans believe that he can hold his own with many of the foremost middleweights.
Rodak had to share the spotlight with Ezzard Charles, whose methodical and merciless attack, ended in a seven-round knockout win over Floyd Howard of Atlanta, Georgia.
Howard never had a chance to show anything but his ability to absorb punishment and we might add he showed an unbelievable amount of this before Charles hammered him to the floor in the seventh round.

Charles had Howard bouncing off the ropes like a rubber ball as early as the second round and finally floored the Atlanta battler with a flurry of lefts and rights just before the bell.
Charles spent the next four rounds apparently trying to find out what was holding up Howard, then in the seventh he cut loose again, flooring Howard for the count of four and again for the full count.
Charles scaled 164½ and Howard 169½. The victory was Charles's seventeenth straight since turning pro. It was his fifteenth knock out win.

In an important fight a couple of months ago he dropped a ten-round decision to Anton Christoforidis, present N.B.A. champion.

Charles took nine out of ten rounds, though he failed to floor Sutka. Sutka covered up after the 7th round, and appeared content to see the finish.
Charles Weathers One-Count Knockdown To Gain Easy Verdict Over Billy Bengal
Ezzard Charles made his first excursion to the canvas in professional fighting last night, dazedly dropping for a one count in the seventh round from a short, overhand right to the jaw, but the Cincinnati middleweight redoubled his fire to easily score a unanimous decision over Billy Bengal of Detroit, in a ten-rounder in Music Hall Sports Arena.

Bengal after being lanced and bloodied with larruping lefts and rights for six rounds, brought the crowd of 1,500 to its feet by flooring his foe with the first punch of the round. It was the lone knockdown.

Referee Earl Butler, confusedly holding Charles's gloves when Ezzard bounded up, momentarily checked Bengal's wild rush to "finish off" the stunner.

However, Charles, stung and hurt, did not need the inadvertant assist. He pursued the Detroiter and pounded with angry lefts to the midriff and looping rights to the mush.

"Ezzard the Wizard" continued his fulisades in the eighth and tenth, almost jarring the visitor into submission in an all-out finale to win his sixteenth straight professional bout and to capture all the rounds except the seventh.

Up to Bengal's "one punch" seventh round, Charles took the offensive continually, spearing his foe's face into a smear of claret with whipping rights and reddening Bengal's body with left thrusts.
The 23-year-old "veteran" Bengal, whose real name is William Mazgal, "rode" the majority of Ezzard's walloping, pedaling the foursquare of the ring and making his schoolboy opponent miss a large percentage of shots.
Charles In Training For Rematch With Billy Bengal Next Monday Night
Cincinnati Enquirer, February 16, 1941

Ezzard Charles, Cincinnati middleweight, launched an intensive conditioning program yesterday for his rematch with Billy Bengal, Detroit, Monday night, February 24.

Charles, who will do his conditioning at his manager's place, Bert Williams Gym, expressed regret in not scoring a knockout over Bengal, although the Cincinnatian won easily.

The thing that still perturbs the dusky dynamiter is the one-count knockdown which he experienced in the seventh round and he vows that Bengal will "pay dearly for that."

Bengal has informed Promoter George Nichols he will be in better shape for the rematch as he claims he was injured slightly in a bout with Mose Brown at Pittsburgh a week before he met Charles.

Charles To Battle Cavrich In Ten-Round Go Tonite
Cincinnati Enquirer, February 24, 1941

Slaka Cavrich, Patterson Field, Ohio, soldier, will take a leave tonite to battle Ezzard Charles, over the ten-round route in Music Hall Sports Arena. Cavrich is a replacement for Billy Bengal, who was forced to cancel his contract because of a cold.

The fight will be Cavrich's first main event in Cincinnati. A straight-up fighter with a knack of burying his chin in his shoulder, fought several semiwindups here, winning all of them easily. He almost plunked Tommy Misko, Detroit stalwart, to sleep in his last Cincinnati bout.

Ezzard, junior at Woodward High School, will be outweighed for the first time, Cavrich totes a seven-pound advantage over his schoolboy foe. Charles is unbeaten in pro competition and already the news of his prowness has wafted into the temples of the Eastern monopolists. He proved his courage under fire in his last bout, picking himself from the canvas to go on and batter Billy Bengal with withering fusilades of smashes.

Cavrich Lasts Two Rounds As Charles Hangs Up No. 16
by Andy Gilligan, Cincinnati Enquirer, February 24, 1941

"I forgot to get up," Slaka Cavrich said last night after he was piled on the canvas for the count by a straight right hand to his jaw in the second round by Ezzard Charles, before 1,200 spectators in Music Hall Sports Arena.

The Patterson Field, Ohio, aviator "lost" his memory in the first minute and 35 seconds of the second heat, softened by a brace of flying lefts to his face and finished off by a short, sizzling sock.

He hit the floor with the suddenness of rock breaking through cellophane, rolled over on his feet and appeared to be in a rather permanent snooze.

Referee Willie Purcell immediately began the count, completed his motions, and Cavrich suddenly bounded up, his hands down and blood leaking from his nose, but otherwise looking strong and ready - ready to get crucified.

Charles mixed early with his heavier foe, both men trading their best "Sunday punches" in close-up first round encounters. Cavrich connected with the first solid punch, an overhead right to the head, followed by a short left to Charles's face, but was definitely edged as the schoolboy sensation poured into his man, steaming both hands to his opponent's head.

Cavrich entered the ring at 174 1/2 pounds, 6 1/2 over the middleweight limit, to Charles's 164 1/2, but Bert Williams, manager of the Cincinnatian, waved the forfeit. The victory was Charles's sixteenth straight as a pro.

Ezzard Charles, Cincinnati's 19-year-old middleweight boxer, chalked up his 50th straight triumph here last night when he knocked out Charlie Jerome of Memphis, Tenn. in the third of a scheduled ten rounds.

The lanky 161-pound student at Woodward High School here, began battling when he was 15 and weighed 126 and he hasn't been on the losing side of a bout since he dropped a close, three round decision in the finals of a regional amateur tournament here in 1937.

In last night's bout, Jerome gave Charles a stiff argument when they tangled at close quarters. Ezzard swiftly changed his tactics to long range punching and put Jerome on the floor twice for nine counts in the second, and finished him with a long right to the chin in the third. Jerome outweighed Charles by nine pounds, coming in at 170.

Charlie Jerome KO'd In Third At Cincinnati
Cincinnati, Dec 3 - (Associated Press)

Ezzard Charles, National A.A.U. and Golden Gloves champion, has turned his back on amateur boxing for good. Charles was suspended for a year at a meeting of the Registration Committee of the A.A.U. yesterday at the Central Parkway Y.M.C.A. for a participating in a professional boxing show at Middletown, Ohio, March 12.

The A.A.U. informed Charles that it would place him on the probation list if he would refrain from further participation as a professional.

Bert Williams, Ezzard's manager, announced he had conferred with Charles's family and they are of the opinion he should turn pro, especially since he already had signed a contract with Promoter Bob Evans.
Substitutes Fail To Fight
Marking the first home appearance of Middleweight Ezzard Charles as a pro, was marred by the substituting of a Long John Reeves, Columbus, for Remo Fernandez.

The classification of amateur or professional appeared to make no difference to Charles, and he buffeted Reeves around at will to take a six-round decision. Reeves, fighting as though his one thought was to stay the limit, made it difficult for Charles to show at his best. Lethal-like body blows had Reeves on the floor twice in the opening stanza.
Charles Wins On Kayo In Second
Ezzard Charles, Cincinnati's hard hitting middleweight, made his debut as a main bout performer last night in Music Hall Sports Arena and battered out a two-round knockout over Billy Hood, cagey veteran from Louisville.

The show attracted a fair-sized crowd. The main bout furnished the only knockout on the card, Hood started out good, and landed a hard punch in the first round, a left hook to the stomach. Charles, however, kept after Hood and floored him with a right behind the ear for a count of nine.

In the second Charles flailed Hood with both hands and sent him to the floor for another nine count. A few moments later, Ezzard scored the final knockdown with a right to the heart.
Charles easily outscored Banks in the first three rounds with his two-fisted attack. Banks, realizing he had little chance to win in a slugging contest, began to lay back and take pot shots at Charles. ===Charles Too Eager===

Ezzard Charles, fighting in the semifinal bout, turned in another of his creditable performances. He gave away six pounds and easily outpointed Charlie Banks, a shifty fighter with considerable experience. Charles's most apparent weakness is his inability to pace himself - a fault that is a hangover of his amateur days where the best style of fighting is a whirlwind one throughout the three rounds. Charles used everything he had in the first three rounds against Banks and fought through the final three stanzas with the steam missing from his punches.
Ezzard Charles continued his whirlwind invasion of the professional ranks last night by stopping Frankie Williams of Akron, by a technical knockout in the sixth round in Leader's Parkway Arena. Moving fast and connecting with straight punches, the local middleweight blasted Williams all over the ring in the fifth heat. Referee Pat Daly stopped the fight when Williams attempted to answer the bell at the sixth round.

This bout was Ezzard Charles' first main event.
