"Crazy Monkey" is a phrase used by South African boxing coach Rodney King for a modified high guard which is taught for standard boxing, ungloved self-defense and mixed martial arts competition. Placing the hands palm-inward on the top of the forehead, it is not merely a passive defense but uses hand motion to catch and deflect blows with the forearms while emphasizing body motion for defense and counter-punching. Body shots are defended by dropping the entire upper body down, similar to a basic "level change" in wrestling.

Designed to provide a solid defense to beginning fighters with or without gloves, athletes who use Crazy Monkey boxing are also encouraged to practice throwing basic punches such as jabs and crosses from this position.

The name of the style is said to have come from having watched a monkey defend itself in this way, and more details are available at Rodney King's web site, http://CrazyMonkeyUniversity.com

The Philly shell or crab is a defense wherein the boxer holds their rear hand in standard position but drops their lead hand to defend the torso, often raising the lead shoulder slightly to defend the face. Body mobility is used to slip many punches, while others may be blocked with the shoulder or arm.

The word "shell" is used to describe the basic defensive structure similar to a passive defense and the lateral motion of counter-punchers using this defense may resemble the sideways motion of a crab using its claws to throw multiple hooks.

An enswell (sometimes called an "end-swell") is a small piece of metal used by a second, corner or cutman to apply pressure to an injury and so help reduce swelling. An enswell may be solid metal (usually stainless steel) and kept cool within icewater or may be constructed with a hollow chamber to hold water and pre-frozen or filled with ice. Proper use of the enswell is to apply light pressure and hold the tissue in normal position as the cold slightly constricts the capillaries to reduce ancillary swelling. Excessive pressure or attempts to "iron out" a bruise will only damage tissue further and exacerbate the bruise or contusion.
