*Smith knocked down in rounds seven and eight, and knocked out by a Canelo body shot in round nine. Ten count.

'''Dan Rafael of ESPN.com reported:'''

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Most boxing fans would have preferred to see lineal middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez fight fearsome unified titleholder Gennady Golovkin in what many believe would be boxing's biggest fight, but Alvarez and his team had a different plan.

Instead, Alvarez returned to the junior middleweight division, where he once unified belts, to challenge world titleholder Liam Smith. In the end, it was as big of a mismatch as most expected as Alvarez won another 154-pound world title on Saturday night at AT&T Stadium.

Smith was game, but he was no match for the bigger, faster, more powerful Alvarez, who knocked him down three times, including with a brutal left hook to the body that finished him in the ninth round.

The pro-Alvarez crowd of 51,240 -- besting the total of 50,994 that Manny Pacquiao drew for the first fight in stadium history against Joshua Clottey in 2010 -- had come to celebrate Mexican Independence Day weekend at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, and Alvarez gave them the power show they expected.

Even with one healthy hand, Alvarez dished out a beating on England's Smith, who was making his third title defense and fighting in the United States for the first time. He was also facing his first top opponent and found out Alvarez was on a different level.

Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs), 26, got off to a good start in the opening round, which was fast paced. He measured Smith (23-1-1, 13 KOs) with hard jabs and worked the body without taking much in return. He continued to attack Smith with more body shots and right hands in the second round. Smith did not look nearly as physically strong as Alvarez, who threw a lot of combinations.

Alvarez showed tremendous versatility with his punches. He landed combinations and fired right hands to the body followed by uppercuts that Smith had no answer for. If Alvarez's hand was hurt, it did not look that way with the steam he had on those shots. Even when Smith did connect, Alvarez was right there to answer, usually with something harder.

Alvarez opened a cut in the corner of Smith's right eye in the fifth round, which ended in a spirited exchange, after which Smith shoved Alvarez at the bell and smiled at him.

But Smith was getting beaten up, and Alvarez continued to land combinations in the sixth round as Smith's eye got worse and worse. Midway through the seventh round, Alvarez put together a combination, including a left to the body and a right hand to the side of the head, that dropped Smith near the corner. He made it to his feet quickly but absorbed punishment in the round. Alvarez continued to pound the game Smith to the body and head in the eighth round of what had become a big-time mismatch.

Alvarez dropped him for the second time in the eighth round with a crunching left hook to the body late in the round. There was no quit in Smith, but Alvarez was just too powerful and accurate for him to deal with. It looked like a matter of time before Alvarez would get the knockout.

It came in the ninth round, when Alvarez landed a brutal left hook to the body. He sunk it in hard, and Smith dropped to the mat in agony. As Smith was writhing in pain, referee Luis Pabon waved off the fight without a count at 2 minutes, 28 seconds as the crowd went wild.

== Post Fight Interviews ==
*"I told you I was going to give you a great fight and bring you the championship, and here it is," Alvarez told the adoring crowd. "I started controlling him, but in the second round I hurt my hand. I hurt my right hand, so I had to use my left more often. I only used sparingly my right hand, but that's what happened."

*"Liam Smith was a resilient fighter," Alvarez said. "He was tough, has a lot of heart. He thinks before he attacks. I could tell in the way he blocked and in the way he approached me. The body shot was what I focused on, making sure I worked his body down, and that is what secured the victory.

*"I felt he was very strong in the beginning, so I felt I had to put that body work in so slowly, so he would dwindle and I did my job."

*"He was too good and skillful today, and I was too slow," said Smith, 28. "I did hit him with some jabs and right hands, but to be more competitive I needed better timing, and my timing was off. I think maybe if I waited a little longer and gotten more experience I would have been able to fight a guy like that better. I am very disappointed."

== Post Fight Interviews ==

"Liam Smith was a resilient fighter," Alvarez said. "He was tough, has a lot of heart. He thinks before he attacks. I could tell in the way he blocked and in the way he approached me. The body shot was what I focused on, making sure I worked his body down, and that is what secured the victory.

"I felt he was very strong in the beginning, so I felt I had to put that body work in so slowly, so he would dwindle and I did my job."

* 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Campbell knocked down Mathews in third and fourth rounds, then knocked him out in the fourth. Retains titles.

'''By Sky Sports'''

In what was dubbed as a fascinating battle between a boxer and puncher, it was the boxer in Campbell (15-1-KO11) who found the early finish and edged himself closer to a world title.

Mathews came into the fight the far more experienced of the two, having had 50 pro bouts, while Campbell boasted a great amateur pedigree which included a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics.

The current Commonwealth champion proved too quick and skilled for the local favourite and it was a succession of brutal left hooks to the body in the fourth that had Mathews in agony on the canvas.

Campbell, 29, was met by boos as he made his way to the Echo Arena ring, while Mathews got a heroes welcome in his backyard, but it did little to change the outcome of the contest.

The fight started off tentatively and neither fighter really let their hands go in the first, as they both got used to the heated atmosphere.

In the second, the fight started to boil nicely and both fighters fired heavy shots to the body, but it was Campbell who began to take the initiative behind his southpaw stance.

His speed and movement were causing Mathews, 33, problems and he cut the nose of the Liverpool fighter late on in the round.

Mathews tried to entice 'Cool Hand' into a fight and marched forward, but Campbell was smart and often made him miss while landing his own sharp counters.

'Dirty' did hit the canvas towards the end of the third round and although replays showed that it was more of a slip, the referee still called it a knockdown.

he end came in the fourth and it was a number of fierce left hooks to the body that had Mathews on the floor with a picture of pain on his face.

The Liverpool man bit down on his gumshield and found his last reserves to come back out firing, but in doing so Campbell found a swift counter that ended the contest.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the fight, Campbell said: "I'm very happy, I knew this would be my toughest test. He's a warrior - I don't know how he got up from the first shot. I was praying he wouldn't.

"I look for every shot, whatever lands. Derry is a big, strong lightweight with a lot of experience - he's been in the trenches. My game-plan was to out-box him for a points win.

"I could really feel what was in his gloves."

* Bellew knocked down Flores three times in round two, and again in round three, retained WBC world cruiserweight title.

*The end came via Bellew’s left hand in the fourth round after both men had went toe to toe and exchanged for three rounds yet, the result was never in doubt as Flores looked a long way from world level.

*In round one both men took no time to figure each other out, with the Liverpudlian landing to the body before knocking down the challenger twice in the second session. The first of which came rather bizarrely with Flores turning to the referee to complain dropping his hands while the experienced Bellew went on the attack catching his man and dropping him to the canvas.

*The third knockdown of the night came right on the bell but both men emerged for round three only for the finish to come devastatingly late in the round as Bellew’s right hand cracked Flores dropping him for the final time and ending the fight.

*After the fights conclusion Bellew heading straight to David Haye who was working ringside for Sky Sports. Both men exchanged verbals before Tony jumped head first through the ropes to get at the man he wants to fight next. In a post fight interview a clearly fired up Crusierweight world champion continued to talk about Haye. With the Liverpool man shouting ‘I will beat you (David Haye) and that pathetic hair cut’ adding that Haye is really a cruiserweight labelling him ‘sponge bob square pants’.

*Haye remained composed throughout the whole episode and spoke confidently about beating Bellew stating he would ‘probably knock him out with a jab’ and that he would beat him so easily that he could schedule a fight for the following week. He also stated he would fight Bellew if it is something that the public demands.
